While your in Funchal try out Restaurant Portaliano,by the side of the municipal gardens.
We had a fantastic there last November.
Squid ink pizza was superb.
Enjoy Funchal we love Madeira.
Thanks Tt. we may well give that a try, we have two weeks this time so were looking to try somewhere new, and we know just where it is, being a regular visitor to Blandy's wine store on the corner.

All of this reminds me to add to the fish list; Espada! For the uninitiated, this 'scabbard' fish is a plug ugly, long flat critter, but the Madeirans cook fillets of it in a light batter and add a banana on top and a passion fruit sauce. It really is the DB's and if ever any of you are down that way, I thoroughly recommend it. Just ask for 'Espada com banana'.

We stay at the Cliff Bay, so, a little closer to town, where we usually find somewhere to eat. We walk down the hill to the centre or to the old town and taxi back up it (we used to walk up when we were younger)! Espada is usually our first night meal, but this time we will need to isolate in the hotel until the results of our Covid tests arrive from the airport immigration people.

[Edit: Back to the fish conversation, it's interesting that no one has mentioned salmon]

Slightly selective as the same article has the paragraph

"James Marr brought a fleet of steam trawlers to Fleetwood and actively started to change the port by selectively fishing for hake. Until then the fish had been a much less desirable catch. It was the Marr family who owned another well known fishing boat, Jacinta."

No doubt my late father who signed on to a trawler the day after he left school was bullshitting when he told me Fleetwood was a hake port.

FFS I can't believe I'm having this discussion. 😂
