Best guitarist ever....

Albert Lee must be up there, as Clapton worships him.
Elliott Randall played the lead on Reeling in the Years, which Jimmy Page voted the best lead guitar break ever.

To many diverse styles to mention.
No mention of Rory Gallagher or Roy Buchanon from the 60s who influenced many later players.
Currently listening to Frank Turner and wondering how he does his shows on an accoustic.

For those of you who appreciate your rock guitar work, give this video a watch. Paul Gilbert doing an instrumental called Scarified.

A trio, all wearing orange spacesuits. The parent album was called Spaceship 1 I believe, which might explain it.

And the bass, the mysteriously named Linus of Hollywood isn't too shabby either. The drummer just sits back at the end like he can't believe what he's just played with.

For a guy who only had two fingers and a thumb on his left hand Django Reinhardt has to have an honorable mention.
Thanks for introducing me to his music Dad👍🏻

I'd go Hendrix cos I *hate* fret wank stuff but Hendrix transcends that and just created something kind of elemental. You listen to him and still, he sounds like he's pushing the guitar to places that sound new, even though it's 50+ years ago...

For me there are too many greats to choose one so if I had to choose from the ones I’ve seen play live I’d say Eric Clapton. The best of the best at the music style he plays.

With Prince/Gilmour/Bonamassa/Satriani/James Taylor all up there in differing genres.

My personal bests -

I love Neil Young, he love how he just seems to play random notes sometimes and his stuff is so loose

Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth - love the squalls and complexity they create between them. It's not technically amazing but it's at it best really interesting and breathless to listen to

Stuart Braithwaite - Mogwai - less is sometimes more and a tremendous creativity to take really simple things to really unexpected places...

Not saying any of these hold a candle as guitarists to some of the names above, but they're my favourites I think.

Oh, fuck me, forgot Keith Levine. Obviously Keith Levine.

Yeah, muddy guitar soundscapes to crushing lead solos played with his fingers and the odd amazing riff thrown in, and an amazing accurate acoustic player too. He’s one of my favourite musicians.

I also liked the jangly urban sound of Bernard Butler in early Suede and James Dean Bradfields guitar lines and playing in early Manics.

Oh, yeah, bradfield!!!

Definitely. Especially when you factor in that they used to unplug Richey's amp cos he was so bad and bradfield would effectively be playing guitar for two...

Great shout that.

Below is one of my all time favourite riffs from what I think is one of the most underrated records ever... (about 38 seconds in) - the melody on motorcycle emptiness as well, the sheer weight of the sound on entirety of the holy bible AND he can sing like an angel too. Pure soul in his voice...
