Best songs ever, with 'meaning'.

I'll start with 'Imagine'. John Lennon.
Wonderful song.

Cole Porter also had a way with words.
Anything goes.
'In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking.
Now, anything goes.
Good authors too, who once used better words, now only use four letter words, writing prose
Now anything goes.
etc

“This guys in love with you”.Herb Alpert. Written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David. Always gets me! Gorgeous.

Up the junction by squeeze
Hated that song when I first heard it.
I suppose you have to be older to appreciate it. Now I love it, Great lyrics 👍

Possibly the song sung with the most meaning is Princes' nothing compares to you, sung by Sinead O'Connor.
Think rumour has it it was recorded just after her mother had died.

There are different ways of approaching this topic:
1. A song withe meaning that conveys that meaning in the best way? I say, A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall is a contestant.

2. A song with meaning that has a beautiful melody and good lyrics? Imagine (as above).

3. A song with meaning that delivers the best message - very subjective this one. Give Peace A Chance, All You Need is Love, Feed the World.

It's been 22 hours and 20 days since you took the pub away from me.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the unbelievable talents of Mr Tony Clarkin, the songwriting genius of the band ’Magnum’.
Although this is someone’s homemade school project video to accompany what I believe to be the bands finest moment....in all its glory, I present the song Les Morts Dansant.....a song about British servicemen during the First World War who were shot for desertion.
Not the most cheerful of topics, however incredibly heartbreaking.

Would agree Tony has the knack for writing some decent tunes......and Magnum are a cracking live band.
Don't wake the lion would have been my choice as a real anti war song....all 10 minutes of it.
I was mates with his eldest lad, Paul and saw them on numerous occasions over the years.
In fact, I lent Tony my collection of Journey LP's....and he still hasn't given them me back.....35 years later.

Seen them do that live loads of times- class band! 👍

Never heard Les Morts Dansant before, very moving.
My uncle, 19 y.o. was killed in the trenches in WW1.
He was apparently just taking a message via the trenches to the front line and was shot by a sniper. He'd been in France for 2 weeks and in the trenches for 4 days.
I often watch 'Sound of Silence (Disturbed) on UTube, very moving

Don’t wake the lion ( as magnificent as it is ) would only be number three on my anti war songs...I’d personally have On Christmas Day as my second choice.
And sending round the heavy mob for the return of them journey albums is long overdue. 😆

Magnum have created a few anti war/ war related songs over the years...Les Morts Dansant, Don’t Wake the Lion , On Christmas Day , Soldier of the line , Only a memory are the ones that spring to mind....all classics

Whilst this is essential a lovers split song, its chorus in particular has so much meaning during our current lockdown situation.....
