Birmingham v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 27.11.21

Why oh why does Neil Critchley persist in playing one striker instead of a 4-4-2 system when we always look a lot more dangerous and likely to score when we go forward. You only have to think the number of points gained per match with twin strikers compared to when we only have one up front. His overall win-ratio is very good, but I feel it should be a much higher percentage than it is now. One thing about yesterday was that when we went 1-0 down, Jerry Yates came on for Madine and the match petered out to a defeat. A manager like Stan Mortensen would have had Ekpiteta as sweeper and put every possible forward type player on to try and get a result. Had Birmingham then won 2-0, at least it meant we tried for the equaliser. We've only had 3 points from the last 5 matches after 3 successive wins put us into the top six. I half expected us to start hunting the top two down for an automatic promotion spot, but it's as if we somehow don't want to go up this season. Come on Neil, please don't chop and change the team every match and always put the best eleven available out, barring injuries and suspensions.
WE CAN STILL GO UP.

you do realise we got promoted to the championship? a league full of teams who have spent tens if not 100s of millions on players. We cannot expect anything from any game, we were favourites for relegation for a reason. Critch and his merry men are over achieving whilst learning to step up a level.

Go on then, I actually thought Critch’s starting tactics were perfect and we should have been 2 or 3 up in the first half with better finishing and a bit of luck. They responded in the second half with more pressure and it turned into a game of unforced errors on both sides. Replacing Mitchell with Bowler was a proper gamble and IMO a bad one, particularly with the short amount of time left it doesn’t really make sense to trade a probable draw with maybe another half chance or two for the slight chance of a win with one or two clear cut chances by going with a more attacking player.

But then I find it doubly ironic people are complaining about him playing it safe, I thought the problem was that he didn’t continue to do so!

The only reason everybody is saying they were there for the taking and they looked so poor is because Critch got the tactics spot on in the first half and we dominated them. The point at which we became there for the taking was when we lost the defensive work of Mitchell when we were already under pressure.

Dunno - think we all see it thru tangering specs. We could just be a bit unlucky - I doubt there's a genuine conspiracy, but then I remain unconvinced they put a man on the moon 50+ years ago.
There is definitely an element of Tangerine Specs, as I said I only watch Blackpool so of course I only see the bad decisions that go against us - but I'll stand by the comment that, even by only watching Blackpool I'd be witnessing bad refereeing decisions going against the other side as well, and I mean the real blatant ones that we've had against us.

I definitely don't think its a conspiracy, or an intentional one at least - there isn't some secret collective of refs deciding to not give us anything. Just at the minute things really aren't going are way in terms of refereeing decisions and it is a shambles!

Having seen the Birmingham goal again from a side angle by a Vlogger though, it was definitely onside so we'll let the officials off for Saturday's game 😉

Thought we never had enough bodies in their box on attacks and midfield not quick enough to get in there..where as you see Brums goal when attacking, they had 6 players in the box ..you need bodies in there, to up the chances...similar to the notts forest game..
