The owner of this shield has kindly donated it to Blackpool Supporters Trust for a potential sale / auction to raise funds for the Trust to support some BFC / community related schemes.

The donor wishes to remain anonymous and would like the shield to be put on public display as it captures a unique piece of BFC history.

This might well be oldest piece of BFC memorabilia in circulation. It was awarded to Tom Hargreaves (who scored the first competitive goal for BFC) for winning the Fylde Football Cup of 1887.

Thanks to both John Cross and Gerry Wolstenholme for their assistance so far … 🍊

Can’t get the images to upload on here …. there’s a post on FB post for visuals of the front and the rear of the shield on the Blackpool FC fans group (can’t link that either for some reason 🤣) - if some one could add a link or post the 2 images t’would be appreciated 👍

Sorted out Andy 👍

i have transcribed a copy of the report of the presentation of this and other medals which took place at the Wellington Hotel (Blackpool Gazette and Herald - 27 January 1888). It is quite long and describes the whole evening in much detail as reports in newspapers did in those days.

I have transcribed the only two reports I can find of Final Tie of the first Fylde Cup in 1887 - Blackpool v Lytham.
Unfortunately it’s not clear whether Hargreaves actually scored. He is mentioned for making a clearance though!
