Blackpool Pass Maps v Crewe

A guy in Bristol has tweeted our pass map v Crewe, (at the request of UTMP. Well done guys!)

On my laptop I can expand the picture to show the detail for each players -- on a mobile phone it will probably be hard to read:

It makes clear what we all thought that we're relying too much on passing to CJ and hope he does something with it.

This is a joke right?

If you asked a Blackpool fan "what do you think a map of the passing would look like" - they would repy "we pass it to CJ all the time and the occasional lump to Madine".

It's good to have the facts confirm what we thought. In fact, it's even worse than I thought! This information is available to other managers and they've already got us sussed. It's time to mix up our tactics and try new things.

Oof, doesn't make for good reading. I know we relied on Hamilton but just how dark that left wing is in comparison to the right on the heat map is insane.

It wouldn't take a football expert to figure out how to nullify that (and unfortunately the football experts have been).

Correct. I made this point in reply to the tweet last night.

I tried to google where these maps are available but found nothing. I guess it's a subscription service. Anyone know?

The lad creates the maps himself and posts them to twitter. He may have only started doing it this season as its the only time I've seen them pop up.

Pass completion:

Ekpiteta 90.4%
Robson 85.5%
Williams 84.2%

Husband 71.7%
Yates 70%
Ward 68.3%
Hamilton 67.6%
Turton 65.1%
Mitchell 58.8%
Madine 58.7%

I guess the top three pass it around safely in the dead zone. Far play to Marv, though.

Turton made the most passes, one more than Robson.

Marvin is a seriously good player in progress. a Young CB in the 3rd tier of professional football.

The key phrase is that he is a work in progress...he is not the finished article and must be afforded time to become that. His physicality is a massive asset and he has pace. His distribution isnt great despite those figures but he already looks more comfortable on the ball than he did when he first got here. I would love to see him in a 3 with the viking and Ballard. That would solve a number of issues.

90.4% pass completion isn't bad for distribution, surely? What does he need to improve, distribution wise?

Sideways and backwards under no pressure is a lot easier than forwards and meaningful passes. He doesnt look capable of a measured diagonal pass or a key through ball at this time...I hope that is where he will improve as confidence grows.

Our stats mean very little if the opposition are just letting us have the ball in non threatening positions. We have dominated possession in the majority of games but its mainly powder puff with no end product.

If you ain’t got the ball you ain’t gonna score once we become more decisive in the final third bingo

To put it in simple terms if we are losing a game there is little point in just knocking the ball backwards and sideways just because the opposition are letting us do that. Some people on here think we dominated Ipswich in the second half but there was definitely an element of them letting us have non threatening possession and as a result they managed the game well in the main. Our distribution from the back is really poor at times and if you watch the Crewe game again there were a number of misplaced passes from Husband early on.

Last season Turton constantly slowed play down and turned around to pass backwards thus losing all momentum. He has done better recently when he has looked long to CJ and when he has played a decent ball into the middle. Hopefully that improvement continues but he does still have a horrible habit of turning around and recycling the ball which is fine of you are winning but not so good when you are losing a game.

I hope that Ballard and the Viking will use the ball better once they come in.

To some extent you are correct and in that respect possession is king BUT and its a huge BUT you must use possession well and create chances with momentum which comes with attacking at pace and breaking through the back line. At the moment the ball goes forward way too slowly and CJ is too deep to be able to utilise his pace, Madine has his back to goal holding the ball up and Yates is not in positions to trouble the opposition.

You cant be more decisive in the final third if there is virtually no service and in some games we could have had Shearer and Pele up front (ok DJ and Varney) and they wouldnt have scored because the ball never arrived.

I know what you’re saying but if you have shearer type upfront he creates chances with his positioning and runs which is a target for the midfield to hit and that why I said if we can sort out up front it will greatly help

For me, Ekpiteta can keep doing what he is doing, and keep improving and growing in confidence, and it's mainly up to the midfield and forward players to improve what they are doing, attacking wise.
Im not disagreeing with you but Im also not expecting him to play killer though balls...he can keep it simple for me and just do his job defensively...I would prefer him in a back 3 but I guess that aint happening. We really need to get the ball forward more quickly and have some urgency and tempo about our play.
