Blackpool v Barrow EFL Cup Matchnight Thread 09.08.22

Well we had Dougall in defensive midfield and the Connolly for the last 20, that went well. Lavery & CJ aren't players who will be here by the end of the month.

My nagging worry is that with Quitch going, Appleton taking over, Keogh suddenly wanting to leave, Madine arguing with him at Stoke and lots of upheaval and a manager who is going to be the polar opposite to Quitchley are the squad an unhappy bunch? If so, we're fucked.

Depressing but not surprising, if we needed a reminder why we are miles off Championship level, this was it. Appleton, 433 and this squad just aren't up to it. Mansford happy to sort a 4 year deal for a failed manager but can't do the business with players. How will the bonehead dress this one up?
Another Appleton masterclass

Lavery not clinical. CJ never will be clinical and Lubala not good enough.. even if he had a few good moments in pre season. Get rid. Along with Garbutt. Keep Husband and Stewart for now..but they'll need replacing in next 2 windows.

At least we got rid of the turgid football. 😆

Not the end of the world. Out of the last 12 attempts (since the year in the prem) we have been knocked out at round 1 in 8 out of 12 seasons. Glad I did not go to the game, roll on Saturday.

It was a good runout for the lads, I learned a lot, we move on to the game on Saturday with a lot of positive’s & put this result behind us, it’s a shit competition anyway, the main aim for this season was to win the league & we’re on course with an average of 1.5 points a game, Rome wasn’t built in a day, bodies to come in which the players will be very excited about, good luck to barrow they were always going to be a difficult team to beat with the formation they play & 7 international players albeit from the Faroe Islands

To be honest, I couldn’t give a monkey’s about this comp and clearly, the players thought likewise. I’ll reserve judgment on our lot when we’ve played both Swansea and QPR, as still very early days. We had four newcomers start tonight, so we shouldn’t be too hard on them. Granted, we put out a strongish team and should have prevailed, but that’s football. It ain’t over til it’s over. Anyway, hats off to Barrow and their fans.

Stoke, Hull, Luton and Reading also lost to L2 opposition. We played a strong defence and midfield but a weird forward line. Consequently gave away few chances and made loads but couldn't finish. On paper at least.

We need a new striker and Bowler up front, or a good Bowler replacement.

Lots of wet knickers again tonight. Where's the resolve folks? Chins up! 3 games. Back the team and demonstrate we have the best fans, not the worst.

Did you go?

Couple of goal scorers in the goals again tonight Brannagan and Bishop we should make a move for.

Oh hang on a minute…………….

No doubt you didnt go again tonight so its difficult for you to comprehend how poor that was

I’m swaying between disappointment and a plea for patience.
Am sticking with the latter at the mo. We were never going to win this cup and we’ve won half of our league games so far 😏

Give it a few more weeks or games and then I think we’ll have more of a realistic view or where we are actually at.

I can imagine it was terrible. But we did have 65% possession and 16 shots to their 3. So hardly got a battering. We had a totally new mid field and a bizarre forward line. It takes time ffs. It's sodding groundhog day all over again. The people who behave the same over and over again.

The team we started with should have been good enough to beat Barrow. In fact probably only Williams, Yates and Bowler will come in to the starting outfield players....possibly Gabriel.
Worrying, very worrying, but never mind on to our next 1 million pound target.

Also why did we only use 4 subs when it clearly wasnt working?...potentially 4 years of this dynamic attacking football...he will be lucky to last 4 months based on that showing and the Stoke debacle...I think he should be given a fair chance but 4 year contract was overkill and he needs to improve things quickly as its more how poor the performances are than the actual results.

65% possession and 16 shots
Was it really that bad?
% possession means bugger all, it’s what we do with it that counts. 16 shots would be alright if 1or 2 went in, they didn’t. If we had 16 shots and didn’t score and the opponent had 1 shot and scored who won?

Due to several breaks away, next game for me is Blackburn at home, hopefully we will have pulled our socks up before then. Don't know whether to look at the scores on Saturday during the game or just after it's finished. Glad I was busy tonight as it sounded pretty dire.

Tin hat on but it wasn't all terrible. It was just one of those nights where we could have had 50 attempts on goal and probably not scored.

Having said this my lad just said that Appleton was still in the dressing room with them half an hour after the end of the game so maybe the main man wasn't impressed !!

Oh no! We only used 4 subs!

APPLETON OUT! 😆

At least we got rid of the turgid football. 😆

He said the players picked tonight had a chance to play themselves into the team on Saturday, I wonder who managed it. It looks to me like Appleton isn’t that enamoured with many of the squad he’s inherited and he may want to get rid of quite a few, he will have to keep some but they will know they’re not in his plans. He’s going to sign about 5 or 6 players at this rate. Like I say it’s the unrest in the dressing room that worries me, if they start to get unhappy it will turn sour very quickly.

But, give it 10 league games and see where we are, it’s too early to be yelling at he manager, he has his style and vision he just needs to make sure he has the players to play it and for it to work.

I couldn't work out (again!!) why Jerry didn't get a look in.
He would have been first on my list of penalty takers.

Appleton: "I'm obviously disappointed to go out. I'm not disappointed with the way the players applied themselves."

"I thought their attitude was first class, I thought some of their play in the second half was good."

Oh, well that makes things alright, thanks Michael. 👍🏼

Not Critch to tolerate though eh?

Appleton cant expect to change the whole squad. And wouldn't be wise to. Prowling around looking moody at the edge of the Squires Gate complex is not the way forward. 😉

He has to get on with it and work with the players we have and the players we can afford to add.
