Blackpool v Barrow EFL Cup Matchnight Thread 09.08.22

Oh no! We only used 4 subs!

APPLETON OUT! 😆
Oh and where have I said Appleton out?...I think you have to give him at least a dozen games but I will tell you now that style of football and level of performance needs to improve quickly or he will be bang under the cosh

To be honest, I couldn’t give a monkey’s about this comp and clearly, the players thought likewise. I’ll reserve judgment on our lot when we’ve played both Swansea and QPR, as still very early days. We had four newcomers start tonight, so we shouldn’t be too hard on them. Granted, we put out a strongish team and should have prevailed, but that’s football. It ain’t over til it’s over. Anyway, hats off to Barrow and their fans.
They might not think much of the competition but they should be fighting for their places and this is what worries me. I’m just not seeing or hearing the connection with Appleton that was there with Critchley. I’m hoping the exodus (if there really is one) is down to us wanting to refresh and not players wanting away. It’s early days though. We shouldn’t get too negative just yet. The new players need time to gel.

It was a joke.

Bang under the cosh? 😆

Excellent. 👍

3 games. Bit of patience.

I don't think it was all that bad but the problems of the past 2 years persist. We were nice and tidy, looked far the better team and had most of the ball but we don't have anybody (except Bowler) who ever looks like they are anywhere close to scoring or threatening. If we keep Bowler we need a striker badly and a left winger badly. Both of whom need to be direct and make good runs so our midfield can pick them out.
It wasn't our full team and more of a half half team as we woukd play in a friendly.
On the negative side, CJ should not play again and needs flogging, lavery needs flogging too as he was awful aswell.

Just said to my lads, he's probably got until mid September to see whether he's got the personnel to build on last season. It feels like he's trying to give everyone a fair crack.

That said, we've gone from a pretty thoughtful manager and coach without so much of an ego, to someone appears to want to be an alpha male.

That's going to take some getting used to; I guess it's why old man Keogh wants to leave - he's probably had enough of that type over the years and as a veteran doesn't need someone shouting the odds.

We've got to give Appleton the benefit of the doubt for now, but he didn't cover himself in glory last time and has less goodwill to fall back on.

We've got a tricky transition, and so far it's not gone well; we just need to keep picking up points and wins as we go through it and hope we come out of the other side stronger.

They need flogging, that’s a bit harsh, can we not just transfer them instead.🤣

Yep, very early days. Still time for the newcomers to bed in and the slow starters to pick up. I bloody well hope so anyway.

This is what i think. It also explains Phil's attitude to Critch and Appleton, perhaps. Quilted body warmer v tattoos! 😆

I dont care as long as they do the job. Critch did. Appleton may do but I'm not sure how well he can work with people and 4 years seems highly optimistic. I'm not convinced Keogh would leave if Critch hadnt.

Appleton deserves a chance and we don't benefit by turning against him. He's turned his managerial career around in leagues one and two since he left us and has earned a crack at this level probably. He seems a decent guy in his interviews at least.

Bit harsh flogging players after a poor performance, it’s not Saudi Arabia 😂

Just got back. We had loads of possession, but we just don't look like scoring at all. Lavery had 2 really good chances but he's not sharp enough at the moment. Hamilton was beyond woeful.

Husband was very pissed off walking off the pitch at the end of the game. He was throwing his arms up and shaking his head whilst looking at Mansford in the directors box.

I can't overstate how much we lacked quality in the final third.

You can slag off Appleton all you want day in day out every day of the week but it won’t make a difference

The board backed Critchley and they will back Appleton

So get behind him it’s self defeating not to

65% possession and 16 shots
Was it really that bad?
Never looked like scoring.
CJ was awful
Lavery put the effort in but could not buy a goal, for someone apparently massively overweight, he chased down everything.
Positives
Loans from Arsenal and Wolves did ok
Hubby and Gabriel back.
Very little else

Jimmy looked pissed off on the preview show. And now his mate's leaving. I think Jimmy is a crucial dressing room character. I hope Appleton realises this. Jimmy will lead by example and keep fighting if kept on board. Captain material!

Hats off to barrow indeed but if any of the players who played couldn’t give a monkey’s I’d suggest we get rid of them asap, they were playing to make a great impression on the manager so they’d be in contention for Saturday, the whole lot of I couldn’t give a monkey’s brigade should get out of our club tomorrow at the latest, ideally tonight

Having slept on it, 16 shots and 66% possession, was it really that bad a performance ?
Yes it was, other than a short spell towards the back end of the game, it was bloody awful. You can look at the statistics all you want, I bet anyone who was there, wouldn't defend the shocking lack of creativity in that team.

One positive was that we created more chances than in many a game. Sadly they led to the biggest negative of the lot.

Was surprised at the booing so soon in the season … Appleton has a real job on to turn some fans around already
I didn't hear much ire aimed at Appleton where I was (Block D) and I didn't think we got on the player's back that much. CJ bore most of the frustrations and, whilst I'm not one to get on at players too much he made numerous mistakes that were very frustrating.

Hopefully, they’ll all bust a gut for us on Saturday, to make up for it.

Just watched Lees great video showing the team was awful and Laverys miss unbelievable 🤷🏽‍♂️ The last penalty blasted over put the tin hat on it. Big big game now Saturday with QPR and Burnley both away after that
