Blackpool v Burnley Official Matchnight Thread 27.07.21

I'm no match analyst, but from what I saw on me telly, triallist put in some crucial tackles. Husband had a decent game and the flow of the game put the focus on our defenders who came out without any egg on face moments, Burney's goal is typical of the type we have been conceding for years, so no big disappointment there, just a bit of a groan moment.
CJ had his moments as did Mitchell. Yates' superglue feet were not at their best tonight and his chances were snatched at, but I think he will get better with more gametime. Maintaining my match routine of drinking beer and eating pies, the last third was a bit incoherant, but standout substitutions were Trusty and Bange who look like great future assets to the team if they stay at the Seaside.
An entertaining game, I didn't expect us to come out as dominating winners. We were competitive and Burnley will know they were in a game.
I am encouraged, and think we will stand our ground in the championship, and with a couple more astute signings can compete for higher aspirations. UTMP

First half pants, improved second half. If some see Connolly and Clark as our two perspective right backs, fair enough. I'd like to think our sights are set a tad higher.
I don't think Clark would be 1st choice by any stretch but I thought he had a good game overall.
Defensively he was very good, going forward not so.
A good back up and I'm sure Critch will have him in his thoughts👍🏻

What did you think of Carey Voy, he looks an exciting prospect to me. You could tell that we need Simms back as that is a frightening partnership with Yates. I would go as far to say that Gabriel, Embo signed as our players and Simms on loan would do it.
Yeah I really like Carey, I liked the video I watched when we signed him but you need to see how they perform during a game and he grew into the game tonight. It's early days, friendlies are difficult to judge, but he clearly has ability.

Husband MOM, Maxi had a good game , apart from a couple of stray passes. Sonny Carey looks like he will be a very good player and he really grew into the game. Second half subs, the two lads Trusty and Antwi looked very promising, I’m rather excited to see them develop. I would have liked to see Jerry and Shayne Lavery play together, I thing they would scare defences to death with their pace and industry, anyway on the whole it was quite an enjoyable game and the improvements in the stadium are phenomenal. UTMP
ps Thank you Mr Sadler.

Tangerine Neil, I totally agree about keeping the young lads here and giving them minutes as second half subs . Antwi and Trusty for me are excellent prospects who would benefit from 10 minutes or so every now and then until they can compete for a place in the team. If they’re good enough they’re old enough !

I would say the big gap is Kenny & Kev in midfield.
We look decent at the back and our front options will cause teams issues.

It’s the control that Stewart gives and Kennys pure energy and pressing that we miss.
Ward is quality but I’d want him in there with either K or K or even as a 3 with both of them.
The big gaps in squad are
Ellis Simms and KDH quality player
Happy with RB trialist and Connolly as cover
There is a lot of positivity tonight on the board which is great to see, the result was not as important as the performance and a lot of young players did us proud

I’d like to see us keep some of these young players at the club and use them in league matches as 2nd half subs, not sent to some random Lg2/ Conference side to pick up bad habits or to uncoach the obvious talents they already have.
Later in the season perhaps. A. we need to find our feet as a first team in this division. B. They'll be another 6 months older.

My observations from tonight:
- Decent crowd - 3-4K
- We looked ok (not outclassed) considering we are 4-5 players short of a Championship first team (including loans)
- Replacement for Ballard needed (Keogh slow and doesn’t track back!)
- Right back needed urgently (trialist out of position a few times)
- Need a quality creative midfielder (e.g. KDH mould)
- Need a quality backup or second striker in Simms mould

Fill the gaps noted above and there are reasons to be optimistic this season!! 👍🏻

Now that would be a WOW signing and Abel is usually bang on the money. If we signed him we would have an amazing front 2. fingers/everything crossed.
If he's available, I really think this is the biggest no-brainer ever. In my opinion, Simms has the potential to become the best striker in the championship, and under Critchley's supervision who would bet against it? I know that's a bold statement but I honestly think he could be that good with more first team experience. Towards the end of last season he was just starting to properly get into his stride and league one defenders really couldn't deal with him at all.

I went into this game thinking it's touch and go as to whether we're really ready for the championship, and my thoughts on it after the game were that I'm happier than I was. I really didn't think at any stage tonight that any of our players, including the new ones and the youth players, were out of their depth. Yes, some did better than others of course, but they all held their own against a Prem side. That's got to be encouraging.
In the centre is where we're particularly well stocked - Carey looks very promising, as do Trusty and Antwi, and if they continue developing I'm not sure i'd be overly worried if they had to cover during the season if Dougall or Stewart were absent. They all look very comfortable on the ball, and while we'll clearly start with Dougall and Stewart if fit, it's decent backup for now.
I actually thought Keogh played well, showed some composure that only that kind of experience allows (and perhaps we lacked early on last season). Trialist did well too.
Negatives I'd say are that we seem quite a short team, Burnley won the vast majority of the aerial battles and that's something that worries me - it wasn't a surprise the manner of the goal. The other thing is that I think we're short on wide players - Mitchell and Hamilton are good, but not much backup for them really, and the same up front. Still plenty of time and i'm sure we'll do more business before the end of August. Not a single loan signing yet either which surely won't end up being the case.
Overall, very encouraging night against quality opposition. We have some very talented young players on the books and it's exciting to think how they might develop for us in the next couple of years.

As far as friendlies go l thought that was a very good game last night and whilst Burnley were slightly the better team over the 90 mins in terms of possession the players we started with and the subs made were all impressive and did a good job. A Dingle mate of mine was very impressed with the way we played in particular the Trialist at RB, who l thought was a bit overwhelmed in the first half but grew into it in the second half. Great to see some of the younger players being given a chance and Trusty looked very comfortable on the ball. Can’t wait for the season to start but how good was it to get back into the ground and watch The Mighty again?👏👏👏👏

Yes, enjoyed that last night. Nothing like being at the game. Dingles we’re clearly a touch of quality higher than us but I think we coped with them admirably. Maxi made 2 terrific saves and on another night we could and maybe should of scored three goals. Onwards and upwards pool 💪🏻🧡🍊

I think that was a keenly fought friendly from both sides and we didn't let ourselves down at all. We were missing 8 players tonight and as we all know we are going to get another 3 or 4 that will be players who will go straight into the team.

Standouts for me, Maxwell, Husband, Garbutt, I thought Keogh looked assured and partnered well with Husband. Cook, the trials had an excellent game and can see him being offered a contract, even if it is as back up right back. CJ was quick and his crossing excellent, I thought Carey looked really assured and full of flair and creativity and is one to watch this season. Yates should have had a brace but he was excellent, making things happen, he is like buying a 10 million pound striker getting him to sign a new contract, he just needs Simms or Madine up alongside him.

When the subs came on I thought Trusty & Antwi looked like they belonged there and are exciting prospects. I also thought Bange put himself about really well and will be a real handful, a proper old fashioned centre forward. Sarkic looks like a different player to last season, he looks fit and full of running, could he be a surprise package this year?

Husband was MOM for me, he is going to be on the team sheet every week. We certainly missed Dougall & Stewart and we are absolutely fine for defensive midfielders, we have several.

Another striker, I would still hope it will be Simms, a creative midfielder, a right back and we won't be far off.
Excellent summary & add to that all the improvements to the ground ( with the exception of the tannoy system which is still pants !). Going to be a season to look forward to and enjoy.

I was surprised how well Sarkic played when he came on in the second half at Southport t'other week and again last night, and you’re right herts he’s looking like a completely different player. His performances last season never matched neither ours or his expectations and he was a great disappointment and l really hope he pushes the players ahead of him this coming season. As you say is he the surprise package? Let’s hope so as it can only be healthy for him and the squad.

Tangerine Dan to replace Critch asap. 😀

According to teenage twitter, he's the worst player at the club. Weird hatred for him.

decent game last night. Burnley are a better side, but after half a dozen seasons in the prem you would expect them to be decent. Our defence looks generally pretty solid, thought Trialist had a decent game defensively, not so good going forward though. Husband looks like he's found his true calling at left centre back. CJ is playing

We have a bunch of players to come back, personally with Dougal and stewart and keshi we might not have conceded quite as much possession last night. Can see us being very solid ths season, hope we can find our shooting boots a bit quicker than last. the future looks very bright indeed.

I thought he had a good game , wuthout Dougall and Simms with him.
I thought that Ward would have shone being the senior midfielder without Stewart and Dougall in there.
It looked to me as if it was Carey that stepped upto the plate with Ward looking a bit subdued.
Let's hope that when the season starts and with the missing two returning that Grant's form will return.

Excellent summary.

Easily one of the best friendlies I have been to with both sides taking it very seriously. If anything I thought Burnley were a stronger side in the second half so the Blackpool subs did pretty well for the 25 minutes they were on.

The goal was a bit of a mess with what looked like about 12 players crowding inside the 6 yard box. Perhaps an example of where a more experienced keeper would have gone to punch the ball and at the very least got a free kick.

I thought we looked a bit weak in midfield throughout the game but we had players missing in that area of the field.

One thing that continues to do my head in is the goalkeeper passing to defenders in the box from a goal kick. Grimshaw in particular did this numerous times and pretty much every time the ball ended up having to be passed back to him because the recipient came under pressure and he ended up having to aimlessly hoof the ball up the pitch because he got closed down.

Overall however, a very enjoyable evening .
