Blackpool v Charlton Official Matchnight Thread 20.10.20

My five game predictions were:

Crewe - L
Charlton - L
MK Dons - L
AFC Wimbeldon - W
Burton - L

I can’t see magical draw lightning striking twice so I will stick with a loss. 1-0.

I'd just like to see the basis of a settled side.
Get the four guys who are going to be our defence and work them into a unit.

Crap at predicting pool results. I can’t help but feel Maddison will score if he’s playing. Hope not.

I reckon 2-0 home win, I thought they played well on Saturday in parts, just lacking end product, but def getting better I think..😎

Not sure tbh.

I just want us to take a few risks and get a few rewards for it, then the confidence should grow from that. Hope Sullay is fit, reckon he can add a bit of guile. I quite fancy CJ tomorrow, no science behind that reason, I just do.

I think a game under the floodlights will really bring home that we're not there. I love a night match, especially if the rain is falling through the floodlights and the pitch is a bit wet.

Maxwell
Turton Big Marv Ballard Husband
CJ William's Robson
Woodburn
Madine Yates
This is my line up too. But it won't happen. He'll keep Ward -- our goals are so rare he can't drop the guy who scored. Woodburn will come off the bench on 65 minutes.

2-1 to the Pool.

I don't know what to expect of Charlton tbh. If they score, we would need 2 to win, and that's a big ask at the moment! 1-1.

I think what I'd most like to see us attacking with aggression. I don't necessarily mean physical aggression, I mean the sort of energy and drive to move the ball quickly in the final third and unsettle their defence.

We played well in a lot of ways against Crewe but like early on in Ipswich and Accy games, we had a huge amount of control but we didn't move the ball fast in their half. We get, we hold, we look, we play a pass, repeat. We look 'comfortable' but not dangerous.

I know it was preseason and that comes with caveats but we scared the hell out of Everton and Liverpool by overloading and a more devil may care attitude but as soon as the season started, we seem to play a more cautious way.
We've played some very nice football but aside from Swindon, I don't think we've given anyone a torrid time. In fact, I'd say, that game aside, the most problems I've seen an individual player cause is Teddy Howe at wing back vs Barrow cos he just went at them, ran hard and crossed well.

I honestly think we need to take more risks to get the best out of this squad. It's got talent in it.

I don't think it's so much personnel as mindset - hopefully, with a solid performance behind us, that confidence will be there a bit more. At times we don't look as if we're moving the ball to attack teams, just to keep it. I know that's part of the plan, but it doesn't always look like the players are looking to do more than get, offload, move, get, offload - it's as if they're more bothered about ending the move than forging a chance. Although Gabriel was culpable defensively, I liked his attitude in risking a run, trying a cross field ball, being direct in getting a cross in.

We also need to work on exploiting the space CJ should bring as he's always marked like hell. Get him drifting in, of the shoulder of Madine, get him coming deep, going left, swapping with Yates. Get his marker(s) following him and get Ward and Robson swapped over so they can exploit the space on their natural foot. I'm willing to buy inside out forwards but not centre mids - especially when they're not delivering the passes, crosses and shots you'd hope to see on a regular basis.

I'd also echo the point on another thread about changes midgame. If you're going to play a high energy, high press, it makes sense to change your strikers and add more energy midway through the game. I got frustrated against Crewe as I felt they had us at arm's length and that fresh legs might have tipped the scales in our favour or swapping a big lad for a little lad given a new problem to their defence. I get why Critch is leaving it to an extent - the longer they play, the more match for, the more gelled and more chance it comes good and so on, but we've got a massive squad and loads of options and we play a way that will drain the front players.

Anyway, got day off work, going for a walk, looking forward to tonight.

Charlton are a good team, quite well settled too and they’ve brought in some really excellent players for this level. I think a 2-1 loss and not due to poor performances just that Charlton are better.

Well, incredibly, I've got the last two games right in terms of result and performance.

So, while the Force is with me, I'd better say we're going to win tonight.

We started well on Saturday. Goal needed though inside the first 20 mins. I don't care if its scrappy, a penalty an own goal or off some ones arse, but we really need to take the lead.

If we do that, I'll go 2-1. We'll go 2-0 up but be hanging on

It'll be interesting to see if we can dictate the game like we did on Saturday. I'll be impressed if we can because Charlton will very likely finish higher than Crewe I think.

Has any footballer ever scored off his arse? Can anyone remember examples? 🤔 😀
