Blackpool v Crewe Official Matchnight Thread 02.03.21

Very tough game. Play good, attacking football and very unlucky not to beat Sunderland at the weekend.

They’ll be blips during the run in. Tomorrow could be one of them. 1-1 draw, not the end of the world as long as we follow it up with a win on Saturday

The reverse fixture was a draw but I thought it was one of best away performances and we deserved more than that.
We were aggressive and pressed hard, we had 15 shots to their 3 and 57% of possession as well as beating them on nearly every other stat! (Apart from the score)

A repeat performance will see us win by 3 goals tomorrow

We often draw against Crewe. 1-1 seems to be the regular score.

Reckon we can do slightly better tomorrow. I’m going for 2-1

Agreed and I think our most important match of the season - we win and we can move up 4 places and virtually put Crewe and Charlton out of our play off picture as we’ll still have 4 & 3 matches in hand on them

lose and Crewe are still in the promotion fight

I just hope we can perform as well as Saturday for the whole 90 mins

this is statement of our intent lads n lasses - wishing everyone confidence and luck

I think we will come out strong and they will be cautious. I think they will make it very difficult for us. I'm sure that the league are now seeing that we are real play off contenders and a point at bloomers will be a good point for them. I just hope we score first as I think it really deflates teams. I think it will be a low scoring game tonight, hopefully in our favour! UTMP!

When we played at Crewe it was straight after the home defeat by Ipswich and was a much improved performance, and on balance, Pool should have won. I think tonight Crewe will make it difficult, it will be a test as they are capable of turning teams over, but I believe we’ll have enough to get a result and the march up the table will continue, 2 - 0, UTMP

Bit worried about this one. The game against Ipswich and making hard work of Rochdale has just sowed that seed of doubt. I'm going 1-1

We haven't got a good record this season of coming back if we concede first. First goal is all important.

Pretty sure Critch will make a couple of changes (possibly Dougall for Stewart, Turts for Gabriel) to try and keep players fresh.

Crewe currently sat in 19th on away form, with 4 wins, 3 draws and 8 losses from 15 games.

Pool have one of the best home win percentages in the league, although we do have 5 home games in hand.

Should be interesting.

A win tonight and on Saturday would be a massive spring board. We'd be right in the mix and with games in hand. Even 4 points from these two home games would move us into the top ten and within touching distance of the play offs.

2-1 Blackpool

We look to be gaining some consistency now.

Discount the first 6 games and were 5th with 2 games in hand, 1 point off automatic.

Always had a soft spot for games against Crewe. They were the opposition at the first game I went to on my own, in the opening Div 4 season, we won 5-0 I recall. Dave Bamber got the first, Dave Hockaday definitely another. Also seen us win 6-0 with them I'm sure.

Then one year they came and just murdered us, footballed their way through us, classy performance. Couldn't believe it, I'd never seen Crewe play like that before. Didn't realise it at the time, but I guess that was the start of the Gradi influence.

Since then, they've been up they've been down but they always try to play good stuff and it'll be hard tonight. We've been winning (mainly) for weeks and hardly moved, just had to keep pace. But a win tonight will be a huge stride forward. Go with confidence boys and attack them, we'll win this.

We dominated possession against them in the reverse fixture without creating much in the way of clear cut chances. Got a good feeling about tonight though, we are a different side to what we were then and their away record leaves a lot to be desired.

Every win we get in the fixtures where everyone else is playing, can only lead to our games in hand being much more rewarding.

Tricky game tonight. Will Critch rotate as well to start the game with fresh legs ? Come on the Tangerine horde !!
I don't think there is any need to rotate for fresh legs. Compared to all the other sides our players have had plenty of games off. It's now the games start to come thick and fast, so maybe then.

As CGP1 above says, for a couple of seasons weren't Crewe the only team to beat us at home. Outstanding football, desperately sad about how far the Club has fallen short in respect of safeguarding their young lads.

Moving on to tonight's game. We are playing well, we should be confident; lets go out there and boss them and if we have them on the ropes don't let up!

Still they are above us in the league so it's not a cake walk.

We still don't create many chances. Gradually looking better going forward, Yates and Simms are both improving and other players getting forward in support like Virtue, Garbutt and Mitchell. Kaikai shaping up a bit too. And Ward has the ability to get in there and shoot. Like to see them all looking to get into shooting positions more often and also to play Yates and Simms in on goal more. We are managing games well but perhaps could be more ruthless in attack. Set pieces still yielding little too.

We're a much better side than we were then. Last Crewe game was almost a piss take in terms of sideways passing and pointless possession retention.

I'd wonder if Embleton has a place tonight. We tend to mirror good footballing sides and I think he's got 'attack' in his make up.

Yeah we are improving, much more mobile up front without that tattooed fella? 😉

I'd like to see Embleton too. He might be the missing link. In more ways than one. Behind Yates and Simms, that could develop into something quite tasty. I like the idea of Mitchell out wide too, he's developing. It's certainly coming together, and has been for a while, but Simms, Stewart and Embleton seem good additions.

I'm hoping for a good performance and a good result. I don't think we'll score many goals - we're not built that way but I can see a 1-0 or a 2-1 win.
PS. If they score twice I can see it being a draw or a defeat.

I was at that game. One of only three games I ever went on the Kop. I'd say September 1981, I think a loanee called Goddard got a couple, he had a brother who was in the 1st Division a the time playing for West Ham. The other game you mention I think was a 6-1 win under Sam Ellis in the Promotion season 1985, night game. I'll settle for either of the same scores tonight, I don't mind which 🤣

You mean the lad who turned the season around there?

I think tonight is an interesting test. I am anticipating it keenly

Massive month for us....chance for the cream to rise to the top and maybe still have a few games in hand on some of our rivals...I think the players know that as long as we keep picking up points....there is still a chance we can catch up but any blip in form could basically end our promotion aspirations.
we are definately a hard team to beat....I think the only time to rest players is if a few results go against us...Dougall may feel a bit unlucky being on the bench as our upturn in form has been alot down to him but him and Stewart are very similar players and I think if who ever plays out of the two of them the team can perform well and wouldnt surprise me to see Stewart having a break soon...they are both going to be pivatal to our success...and the defence has performed magnificently the last 18 games. There are no easy games in this division and we are going to have to fight for every point but the boys are buzzin and I see no reason why we cant get a good result tonight. All IMO of course.
