Blackpool v Sunderland Official Matchday Thread 17.04.21

Ballard my m.o.m. but all defence played well against their big lads ,apart from mcgeadys shot that hit post i dont think there was many clearcut chances by either side, maybe we got a bit of luck with the goal but they say it shows you are a good team when you can win ugly and what we have to remember is all the injuries we have had all over the park ,probably more than most in our league,so happy to take the points however they come the spirit in the squad seems to be amazing with all fighting for the team, even when coming off the bench so lets enjoy and see where we end up ...
Agreed, he really does love defending doesn’t he. Proper CB.

If Sunderland are offered big money for Wyke they should snatch there hand off. As far as Dougal getting a second yellow, after the foul on Mitchell not getting a yellow, Kenny could have used a weapon and got away with it!

Sometimes you win ugly. I agree against Lincoln we should have been out of sight, but we drew, today we had fewer chances but had the rub of the green, then put in a terrific defensive display. I’m made up 😄

The opposition performance has a big impact on our performance. Obviously. You can only play as well as you are allowed and our squad is depleted and Sunderland fighting for their lives.
Yeah but if we were to watch the game back there was many many times we under no real pressure gave the ball away, Dougall in particular was a main culprit today.

It wasn't our best passing and attacking play, Sunderland fans will probably think not too worried about playing us as its not a display to strike fear.

However we all know we can and usually play a fair bit better than that.

Good defensive display with very limited attacking and passing play. Got the result.

This is not Barcelona it’s Blackpool, we will pezzle these 3-0

How is it we never play against a team with a shite keeper? Is it that we’ve got them all?

0-0 would have been the correct result....they were dross and just hoof ball merchants......not a good side at all...

Performance wise, we've been decent and by far the better side in their own back yard. Id not fear these at all in the play offs.

Shame we have nobody that can play as a no10, someone like that Embleton kid at Blackpool.

You make it sound like we were playing Man City; this was Blackpool - Hull / Peterboro go a goal down and come back with 3 or 4. Not saying Pool were poor but reckon the top two would have turned them over.
I think I also read that it was the 1st time that they have failed to score in 27 games!

Dougall suddenly a target. Yet Turton gives the ball away as often if not more.
Not a target for me, I've praised him a lot and him, Ward and Embleton have been our best midfield.

Today however he stood out to me as being one of if not the biggest offender's of giving it away too cheaply.

I dont think there's anything wrong with pointing that out, people have an off day, passing wise he looked to have one.

I agree with a lot of what you say but can't really understand why a long ball strategy would benefit a tiring team? I would have thought playing to feet, and keeping possession, would require less energy. "Make the ball do the work", is the old adage. Not quibbling at all, just interested why teams would use this approach, which they often do. It seems massively counter-productive.
I think he means the long balls, not being a strategy are the result of a tiring team.

Last saturday we played some great football and somehow ended up only drawing. This week Sunderland did a job on us and we have picked up 3 points with our most undeserved win of the season. That's how football works out sometimes.

Great effort and determination from the players with Ballard absolutely outstanding. We are down to the bare bones and still this group managed to grind out results. Terrible refereeing at times, the non-booking being the worst.

Take McGeady out of their team and they are very short of any attacking quality - good and passing the ball around the back/midfield but lacking around the box. I'd also have Jerry over Wyke any day of the week.

We probably need 7 points from last 6 games to secure a PO place. Hopefully we will have 2 or 3 players back if we do make them as we do need some more options, even if just on the bench.

Very relieved today as a loss would have made these last 6 games a lot more challenging than they have now become.
Pretty even I thought, Sunderland may have been a little better on the ball but hardly dominated the game to "do a job on us"

Great result, but in all honesty we were lucky and Sunderland deserved at least a draw, although they let themselves down badly in the final third. Sunderland look a very good side when in possession, and my main criticism of Blackpool today was that we continually kept giving the ball away to them. I thought half-time came at a good time for Blackpool as Sunderland were generally in control, and I thought that it would be a good time to re-group and change things tactically by keeping the ball better in the 2nd half. Sadly there was little change, and on another day they would have paid the price. Assuming Blackpool do make the play-offs, they are likely to face Sunderland again, not to mention Lincoln, and if we are to succeed, we need to adapt our game tactically to deal with differing threats from opposing teams. The next game will probably offer a different challenge again against a team desperate for survival in League 1, and I hope that Critch gets the tactics right next time. As stated earlier though great result today.

You do have to laugh at Sunderland fans... they just won’t have it that they’re at this level and they can’t compute how they can’t batter all that come before them. It’s incredible why these clubs believe that because of a large fan base it somehow entitles them to be better than they are. They never learn. They’re already questioning Lee Johnson but how many managers do they hound out?? All their managers can’t be so poor, it’s just impossible????

And we do seem to play better away from home.

You're right. It is counter productive. But when you are tiring after sixty plus minutes, to get your body shape right, work a space to make the pass, find a team mate who is aware and making space for himself, then fashion a correctly weighted ball delivered at just the right pace, pitch and distance takes a lot of energy. A tiring player is more likely to think 'fuck it, I'm lumping it long. It might be a while before it comes back'. It doesn't bring any benefit. It's a side effect of fatigue.

Totally get your point, but I think these are skills that can and should, to an extent, be coached and worked on in training. Backs-to-the-wall panic hoofing seems to have been a feature of our game in the last 15-20 minutes or so of our games for a while, and can't be totally attributable to fatigue.
Having said that, I recognise the lads have been working their socks off, and have a lot of spirit. UTMP

I wish they could work on a way to stop doing this. It's a combination of not taking our chances and a poor final delivery from great positions that has us holding on to slender leads game after game. It's so stressful to watch but they are magnificent at putting in a die for the cause defensive brick wall.

But they do seem to put themselves into the predicament time and time again as they lose the ability to pass to a tangerine shirt

Right, that bloody referee!
From early doors it was clear he was a wrong 'un. Pushes in the back of our players when he was 5 yards from the action, and no fouls given. It gave Sunderland the green light to be agricultural and weigh in on our players. Kaikai was thrown around like a rag doll!
Thank goodness for Ballard and Gretarsson. They performed heroically. Now, Ballard's a unit and was able to deal with the thuggery. Gretarsson is more of a cultured defender and should have had proper protection from the referee. But he didn't get it. Result? They continued hammering the Viking until he had to go off injured. If it's bad (cross everything that it's not) then that sod of a ref is to blame for allowing the Mackems to get away with the heavy stuff
As for the foul on Gabriel....only a corrupt bastard could do what he did.
Fuming doesn't cover it!

Edit: courtesy of Rotterdam +Sussex. The foul was on Mitchell.
Let's hope he doesn't referee the next one

Agree with this but don't forget, in the 1975 league match we were backs to the wall and it was a huge clearance from defence that found Mickey Walsh. The rest, as they say........

Listen arsehole, it was 5 points after the Sunderland game and back to 3 points after Oxford won. Wake up gormless pillock.
Come on 62 years let’s see some positivity from you.
Both teams below us on 65 points have played more games than us.
Charlton have a tough run in.
Oxford only have 4 games left.

Odds for making Play offs are now 1/16.

Have a nice day.

1966. Nah, it was a bloody great, pinpoint pass! :) Was it Paul Hart? Watched it yesterday, but will have to re-watch now. 👍

Watched the game through this morning. Seemed a pretty even contest to me, one team hits the inside of the post the other then squeezes a slightly fortunate goal in at the other end, Both sides played pretty well, better than I expected based on what I've read. We managed the game pretty well. Sunderland had 3 good chances that i can remember, all second half. The post, the Ballard stop on the line-ish, and the low central shot that Maxwell pushed away. We didn't create much, Missed Embleton to some degree at least. KK, Yates and Simms were all handled pretty well by Sunderland. Simms looked the best of the three, he's getting better every game. I thought Dougall had another pretty good game, In my opinion, some people see his loose passes and then base their assessment of his performance on that. He's instrumental for us in the way he breaks up play. We'd be pretty lost without him. Ballard and Garbutt are also crucial players for us now, and hopefully Simms and Yates can keep grabbing the goals. Ballard, Garbutt, Simms and Yates could all be gone by next season. 😬 Hopefully they will deliver us to the Championship first....

When you're watching live the tension ratchets up so it's more likely that people will be more critical of individual players.
In the cold light of day I would be more likely to appreciate our defensive shape and Less likely to bemoan our lack of forward play.

We were pretty toothless up front and I said so above.
