Blackpool v Sunderland Official Matchday Thread 17.04.21

We couldn’t play football ourselves because the ref was a joke and let them get away with foul after foul.
The ref was abysmal but we can blame him for us booting it forward at every opportunity or Dougall being in space, running into trouble and then passing it straight to Sunderland time after time.

We had an off performance today, got the job done still.

Defensively we came through but attacking we were dreadful.

Hopefully get a bad attacking performance out the way.

But we weren't at our best and still won, its good to do that even when paying not the best.

Brilliant! I wouldn't have said at the start of the season we are a team that can dig one out but now we can and we did, well done to all!

Massive, massive win, made harder by the most inept reffing decision i think i've ever seen. We should have been playing against ten men for most of the second half. Back 4 + Thorniley and the keeper superb. They probably think they deserved more, but how many times have we been there this season.

First scabby win of the season but we were due at least one.

Sunderland look a decent side but other than the McGeady shot didn't really cause any serious problems apart from when Maxwell dropped it. Credit to Ballard, Gretarsson and Thornley for being competitive against their big men and tireless work from everyone.

We didn't keep it well enough today and we need more options from the bench but not too far off the play-offs now so all looking good.

Ooooo those Billy Big Bollocks Sunderland (We're too big for League 1) aren't going to be happy tonight 🤫

What a great feeling even if we had to hang on a bit at the end. With Charlton drawing and Portsmouth losing it could have hardly gone better, apart from Lincoln, could just do with Gillingham doing us a favour against Oxford later.

Happy Saturday everyone, not you Lee Johnson, not you 😁

Terrific performance against a good side, boy was that a hard fought win. I’ve not bothered with AVFTT today as I was glued to the game sat on the edge of my seat. We rode our luck & got away with it, then made our own luck. The ref was obviously from Sunderland. 🍺🍺🍺🍺 tonight.

A few saying how poor we were and just hoofball merchants, nothing to fear from us.

Hard to disagree really with todays display.

Compare that to Lincoln away which we couldn't win and we created chance a after chance.

Goes without saying but if we get in the playoffs we MUST be batter with the ball again, today was like travelling back to the Grayson era.

We got very twitchy and lashed the ball everywhere and nowhere ooohh ever since we scored the goal.
Sunderland were cynical tho. The ref gave us nowt and then some.
But, another 3 points and no goals conceded. Going to be a few sore bodies about tomorrow I'd say

"Nothing to fear from this Blackpool side,"

Apart from the fact that we just beat you!!!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Gosh, haven't been on that site before, they really are up themselves, aren't they?

Perversely, as it turned out maybe the non- sending off did us a favour. Who knows how Sunderland would have reacted to being down to 10 men. Plus I think the ref realised he’d cocked up and to even it up barely played any additional time over the 7 minutes.

Dont know if it’s mentioned above but regarding the sending of - it looked to me like the red let Dougall off a 2nd yellow with a nibble a few seconds before so I think that’s why he didn’t walk the Sunderland player.

That said the Sunderland players challenge was a million times worse than Dougalls. Ref just bottled it really.

Absolutely massive win. A huge step toward the play offs that.
However, I think we're now seeing how much benefit a strong subs bench brings in the last 20 mins, and how we're suffering because we don't have one. The forward players were knackered and needed replacing, and we just don't have many options at the minute.
But the defence were outstanding (again), with Ballard comfortably the best player on the pitch.
Excellent, and finally we've learnt the art of time wasting and playing a game out, like so many teams do to us.

Ballard and Gret very good so too Maxwell.

Sunderland very lucky with the non sending off but were the better side and ours was a scratchy goal.It will be interesting to see what happens in the return game.

Maxwell was majestic today, looked a real captain to me. I have never seen a goalie bend the ear of a ref as long as he did in my many years of watching. At one stage I thought he was training for a job. Well done and well done the team UTMP

Get 3 points on Tuesday and we can hopefully breathe a bit easier - interesting how well Lincoln are doing - I thought they were terrible!

Just re-watched the goal. The move started off with an immaculate bit of defensive play by Ballard, yet another good clearance from Maxwell, excellent knock on from Simms, a lovely ball from their man to Sullay who showed a cool head to play in Garbutt. I think the final touch might have been off their defender under pressure from Jerry.

The Dougall tackle was one of many dodgy tackles by both sides. The tackle on Mitchell was as clear a foul as I have ever seen - well apart from a certain Gary Briggs foul a few years ago. Ref bottled it and the assessor will be very critical

Last saturday we played some great football and somehow ended up only drawing. This week Sunderland did a job on us and we have picked up 3 points with our most undeserved win of the season. That's how football works out sometimes.

Great effort and determination from the players with Ballard absolutely outstanding. We are down to the bare bones and still this group managed to grind out results. Terrible refereeing at times, the non-booking being the worst.

Take McGeady out of their team and they are very short of any attacking quality - good and passing the ball around the back/midfield but lacking around the box. I'd also have Jerry over Wyke any day of the week.

We probably need 7 points from last 6 games to secure a PO place. Hopefully we will have 2 or 3 players back if we do make them as we do need some more options, even if just on the bench.

Very relieved today as a loss would have made these last 6 games a lot more challenging than they have now become.

Sunderland played more long balls than we did and 50% of their passes were in their own half.

Err, nearly every time they got in our box they caused problems - and that was often.

If we make the playoffs we might get a week off without a game for the first time in months. That could work wonders for the squad's fitness. All these delayed matches are beginning to tell. Some tired legs out there, which was the main reason for the long ball. That win was massive, and a credit to the spirit in the camp. As Critch was saying early season, 'we need to find a way to win the football match.' Do that and you get promoted. We know we can play much better than that, but would anyone swap performance and result today? Bet most of their fans would.
