Perhaps our most under-rated player? Doesn’t just fill a gap in a few positions as say Reece James did, but he’s effective in every position he’s put. He was brilliant yesterday in a position that, given we seem to be focusing on strengthening in central midfield, he may find himself playing this season regularly. Also noticed he doesn’t do ‘friendlies’, put a few big tackles in on Kent yesterday and against Leeds he didn’t hold back. Hope he becomes a fans favourite this season.

Glad to hear he did well at RB yesterday, as I thought it wasn't his strongest position last season.
I personally think he's much better as a no nonsense midfielder who likes to get stuck in.
But I said last season that he's a very useful player to have in your squad, our version of Paul Madeley 😁

wasnt overly impressed when he first arrived but hes proven himself in every position since.
probably got a few goals in him as well, got close a couple of times yesterday.

Defensive midfield destroyer will be his best position, has a good shot on him so when he does get forward centrally he can be a threat.
Does a job defensively at full back but doesn't offer much in attack out wide.
Good man to have on your side.

Ive said this since he first signed for us, a really good player to have in our squad, and a very good player in his best position in defensive midfield, Always gives 100% and gets stuck in, he can chip in with a few goals also.

I was unsure when we signed him but he quickly grew on me. His career has probably been hampered a bit due to him being seen as a utility man so he's never really nailed down a set position within a team. Last season was different and he was brilliant for us in central midfield, I just hope the fact we need him at right back doesn't have a negative effect on his progress.

For years as a team we've been a little bit too nice at times for my liking so I love the fact he's got a bit of a nasty streak in him.

Mr Reliable for me and has improved massively since he started last season at RB. He would be my CDM with Sonny and Fiorini pulling the strings either side of him.

It might be that once we have full backs it’s Connolly back into DM. Against better teams, MA can play him and Kenny with one AM but Kenny more advanced than last season?

Options on our 4-3-3 is the 3 in midfield. We’ve started off with 2 x AM’s but it might be more of 4-1-1-1-3 in tighter games??

If we could afford to lose him as the man who can cover everywhere and do that well, then yes I'd agree that defensive/holding midfield is his best position. I'd be very happy with him playing there regularly.

Madeley played in goal too in the days when there wasn't the obligatory 7 subs!!

Great player, still underrated even though I think he is rated quite highly by quite a few. Deffo one of my favourites atm, feel like be would die in that shirt which can't be said for everyone who pulls on the jersey
yet you still defend CJ.

I really like Connolly, he's very robust and has a great attitude, and we need that kind of player. Especially in the championship. He stands up to the stuff dished out by the more physical sides. Let's them know we won't be intimidated. I wouldn't be disregarding Dougall though, and Wintle showed there is a place for a player in the centre who just moves the ball around with minimal fuss. Connolly is a good hard man but doesn't possess that passing ability and awareness of that role, IMO. He's still a defendwer really, with a defender's mindset - a stopper.

I'm not sure what MApp will settle with, a few games may well see revisions to his plans. getting the right balance might take some experimentation. I know he's a 433 man but quite a few sides in the league use a back 3 and play 343 or 352 type formations. If you are going to play attacking full backs it gives you more insurance behind them, and Connolly could fit well into a back 3, I think.

Great asset, hard as nails. Loved it when defending a corner he backed into an opposing CF trying to bully Grimmy. Stamped all over his feet. The forward got the message pretty quick.

We will soon see Appys preferred CDM next Sunday against Everton as l expect him to at least start with his intended line up against Reading or as close to it.

Stays fit too. Real favourite for me. You would hate to play against him. Decent disciplinary record for a hard tackler too.

I thought he was shite and I was wrong. Really like him now.

Brilliant again yesterday both offensively and defensively. As mentioned by others he’s quickly becoming one of my favourite players.

He deserves a proper chant though. Not very creative that Keshi, CJ and now Connolly have the same chant. One of them would easily fit into the old Hoolahan chant say.

Grown on me since he came & deserves to be a regular. He doesn’t look a big person but he’s a tough guy in the Briggs sort of way. He made sure he wasn’t out muscled yesterday before unleashing a terrific angled shot to ultimately give us all 3 points.

yep, thinking the same. Grown a lot on me since he first came. I just worry that he might get classed as a utility player though. Gabriel as a more attacking player from full back and some-one of a few as a defensive midfield player. He's one of those players whose consistency will give you a 6/7 out ten every week.

I want to see him in the No.6 role covering for our marauding FBs, Thompson and hopefully a soon fit to return Gabriel. Fiorini looks more of a No.8 and finding another No.8 is one of the jigsaw pieces this is still lost down the back of the settee.

yep, very noticeable in that first half it was Fiorini as the deeper one of the three picking the ball up from the back. And on two occasions in the game he got muscled off the ball in dangerous areas.

I don’t get this Connolly and Dougall in midfield. Paper’s wants one defensive midfielder and two in front or two number 8’s as is the in fashion saying. Connolly will make that position his own and Fiorini will be one of the 8’s, the other is likel to be Carey unless we splash some cash on a new player for that role. Dougall will be on the subs bench.

Sorry to be disrespectful to Carey but I don't think he's the answer yet. That 2nd "no.8" position is the one we need to fill but with an experienced player not a kid.

Suppose that's the interesting thing when Gabriel does return that you wouldn't leave Connolly out of the squad which makes that side very strong in that area.
