Callum McDonald

There is no doubt he's presence has brought more of a shape to the squad but what do we think? Have to say most games, what he does is OK but I find his presence largely anonymous. How much of that is down to the players not giving him the ball I'm not sure but he does seem to be a spare part at times.

At the start of the season we looked a bit lopsided to the right hand side.
When McDonald came in it gave us a much better shape which coincided with a good run of results.
For some reason SG brought him off in a game and he wasn't seen again for weeks.
He maybe wasn't as noticeable against Bolton because Ronan and DH were more dominant.

Suits the current formation with a fluid back 3 / 4
He was quiet against Bolton but still looks in better form than Bola was? I think DD might give Bola his shirt on Saturday due to his quiet night Tuesday.
One thing I did notice in the second half was that he seemed reluctant to get as far forward as Feeney was. This was the start of our defending too deep as it allowed their RB to push him further back and left us under pressure. Not sure if this was tactical from DD but it certainly didn't help.
When you look at Williams at Man U, Sako at Arsenal and Robertson at Liverpool, they are all much further forward in attacks than Mcdonald was getting.

Unless you have a squad full really talented players with excellent football brains and the ability to adapt at will (which we don't...) it's always much better to avoid square pegs in round holes. This - on the face of it - was where Larry was going wrong. He was consistently looking to play what he felt was his best 11 as opposed to his most balanced team and unsurprisingly it kept failing because the left hand side was non-existent.

It's interesting that Bola also seems to have carried the can for this. I wonder whether he'd also be looking better playing in McDonald's position with the left-footed husband behind him providing additional support.

We should also remember that McDonald has come back against 2 very poor teams.

Anonymous is fine. You don't need 11 players scoring and assisting. You need them all to do their job and some to shine. Macdonald did ok. That helps the 'flair' to take risks and get the ball.

In the games that I have seen Bola play he looked both unfit and poor. A big disappointment compared to when he left us.

Tbf to Bola, he was playing the Husband role in Larry's wonky set up. It might be interesting to see him have a go where he hasn't got to play two positions at the same time.

I think Bola coming in and being as poor as he was kind of shows how well husband did, even of it wasn't that obvious. He carried that side of the pitch in his own so many times.

We went 7 games unbeaten in November McDonald started every game, then for some reason he was dropped by Grayson when looking one of our better players,he then came back into the side against Reading away and played well in the 2-2 draw but was then dropped for the replay and not seen again in the 11 until Dunn took over who's put him straight back in,i rate him he'd be one of the first on the team sheet for me.

I'd like to see McDonald on the left side of the back 3, and give Bola another go at wing back. Nothing against Husband, I just feel McDonald could do that role equally as well, and Bola would add more going forward.

Husband is taller and a reasonable header of the ball, don't think McD would suit there.
