Our lads are brave - even on fumes they know what to do AND do it

Even though apart from the first 15 mins we were 2nd best we actually managed the match pretty well with LOADS at stake

And we now have a one match (3 point) cushion in the play offs albeit a week later than we should have

Most of all - any team especially given our numbers available, that can go 16 matches unbeaten is one to acknowledge

We’ve had to go about this league the way we have and given the inexperience, getting to know all the new players this is one hell of an achievement

It’s all about the result - performance, stats and their moans mean nothing - we were very solid today and our skipper largely enjoyed his outlook

Stay solid safe and confident

Interesting this as there seems to be a real divide about how well or not we played yesterday. Certainly the stats favour Sunderland but I thought bar the ball against the post, we looked equal for much of the game and better in patches. Certainly not a game I'd want repeated if we met them in a semi but an interesting game management for a final.

Take Mcgeady out of the equation and Sunderland are distinctly average
I don’t know about that, Charlie Wike is one hell of a unit up top, and he knows where the net is, and the lad in the middle , is it Leadbetter , he can pick a pass

We battled and held on against the best team we have seen this season on the day that they played us. I don't know how Sunderland perform week in week out as that's the first time I have seen them but they do seem to be lacking something up front to make the most of their possession.
As for us I still think 4 4 2 asks too much of our players and we keep giving the ball back to the opposition. Our ball retention was poor yesterday and the forwards were feeding off scraps.
Much prefer when we play 4 2 3 1, I think we look more of an attacking threat than when we play two out and out forwards.
But we got the points so we must be doing something right!

I thought they were prob the best team we've faced this season, and a draw would prob have been a fairer result.
At first glance they look like a side that should walk this division. McGeady is top notch and Wyke is the good old fashioned big striker every club wants. Having said that, there is clearly something missing in their make up, testified by three straight defeats. Maybe, mentally they are weak. When you come to the play-offs, it's like a cup final. I'd rather have a showdown against an opponent that is psychologically suspect.

don't think we were at our best and they probably weren't either. We defended well without coming under too much pressure. Overall didn't think it was a great game but it was a great three points.
20s, having been kept in the edge of my seat for the duration of the match and bitten my fingernails till there was nowt left, I have to disagree with you. I kicked every ball, made every tackle and played in goal as well. That to me is a good game. 👍

Yeah, I agree with that 100% but I also see 20s point. Quality and spectacle can both make a good game and aren't mutually inclusive. It wasn't (barring a few moments) a 'good game' technically but it was, like you say, tense, commited, 100% effort and I really enjoyed it.

It seemed to me like 2 well matched sides, both wanting 3 points. That's all I ask for in a football match. 2 sides, trying to win who aren't miles apart in ability.

Our problem is the over reliance on Wyke and McGeady. We simply don't have goals anywhere else in the team. That and the injury problems, we only had one actual CB in the squad and the defence is made out of a second choice LB, CB returning from injury and two midfielders. I'm not even going to mention the keeper.

I expect a lot of the same on the reverse fixture, tight game with one or two goals to decide it. I don't think either of us were playing at our best and your momentum might give it the edge as we are mentally weak.

What do you make of the new ownership Roker? More of the same or a turning point?

Both winning their home games would suit both sides tbh and a point better for each than two draws between them! Having said that, 4 points from the two games for Pool would be a great return.

Perfect day yesterday weather wise and I’m convinced if you lot had been in the ground that you would have sucked the ball that hit the post into the net! Fine lines between getting results eh!

Blackpool away is one of my favourite away days, would've been class in the sun and I've never had any bother going down to your place. I was absolutely gutted when lockdown came in last season and cancelled that one.

Our home form has been shocking this season so I'm not very confident, at least you'll come to play football and not play for a point so it should be a good game.

Pretty sure as well that with us being in the ground telling them to get it down and play, encouraging them on etc we would have put in a better technical performance, like we have shown against other top sides.

Also that Sunderland player who went rolling around after committing a foul on Mitchell, didn't get that second yellow card, imagine the noise when that challenge went in, it deserved a second yellow anyway, a joke of a decision but imagine the pressure to give it with us there.

I thought Leadbetter played well and McGeady is probably one of the best players in the division...Wyke was well shackled though and isnt any better than other strikers in the division...Garbutt stopped Jordan Jones playing and he has looked very good for them recently

For me, what you describe makes it a tense and nervous game but in terms of quality I thought there was very little as defences on both sides were well on top. There was very little if any goal mouth excitement, no free flowing football, chances didn't exist at all, no times when you said "he should have done better there" like there was against Accy. A neutral I would have thought would have said it was a poor game. But it was the three points that mattered and I'll take that every time over an exciting game that we don't win.

Sunderland's problem is that their best players are past their best and that might be telling now at the end of a long, hard season.
I think their problem is also the weight of expectation. For us, promotion automatically probably exceeds our expectations. Definitely mine. I didn't *expect* promotion. I hoped for it.

For them, they'd probably moan at being second and it being embarrassing not to win the league.

Stuff like the Will Grigg transfer going badly wrong, the Netflix documentary and all that has just added to it. They're playing under a microscope. So is everyone, but the pressure for them is five or six fold, sheer weight of numbers and the staff all know, new owner will want to make some decisions sooner or later.

Critch must be reasonably comfortable at the moment. I think 6th or above will tick the box on his progress review at the end of the year, like you say, we've got plenty of young assets as well now which is another feather in his cap and they've got a load of aging big money buys as contrast.

For them (the squad/staff there now), it's all or nothing because if they don't do it, there'll be big changes and that's a difficult place to be.

I love Kenny Dougall , but his distribution yesterday was abysmal. He seemed to be in a rush with every pass and a little impetuous. Considering the circumstances, his physicality , I thought was justified. I just wondered if the referee might be more against us.
As far as Sunderland are concerned, they are no better than us. they just think they are. That suits me !!
