Changes for Tuesday?

He played a massive part in Crewe's goal on Saturday and was way too slow to catch him and prevent the cross...if it had been Gabriel he would have been crucified...factamundo

I'd really like Critchley to stop messing about with the midfield. Robson and Ward were the wrong way around in midfield the entire game and it made play slow and lethargic at times. Just common sense and a bit messy to be honerst.
Disagree with that it enables the wide men and full backs to have more space out wide as the inverted players naturally tend to come inside so for me keep changing around during the game to keep other teams guessing

It just is stopping Ward and Robson putting crosses in or making that run beyond the defenders because they will naturally ALWAYS be on their weaker foot. Also Ward has been seen as a right winger for other teams he's played for. Just looked the most obvious issue with midfield on Saturday and shocked it went on for 90 minutes as I bet it would have been better irrespective.

He backed off and backed off and let the boy get his shot away, depends which way you look at it. Either way he was definitely culpable as a centre half in that position.

Spot on Scara, thats what he does, and it isnt the only occasion. In a previous game at right back, he backed of from the winger all the way to the 6 yard line. He was lucky to get away with that one.

Not sure what has happened to KaiKai but he isn't listed as injured for this.
I would like to see Hamilton, Madine and KaiKai start up front, it presents two pacey headaches for Charlton and makes it harder to double up on both sides of the pitch. Add to that the battering ram with good feet that is Madine and it could be a dangerous combination.

I think CJ needs a rest. Maybe Kemp, Bez or Woodburn (if ready) instead.

Unleash CJ second half if necessary against tired defenders.
Totally agree that he needs a rest, not quite been on it the last week or 2, partly due to teams over compensating on his threat, and partly i think for the reasons you say

I wouldnt pick this team but I think he will go for..

Maxwell

Turton
Ekpiteta
Ballard
Husband

Williams
Robson
Woodburn
CJ
Madine
Yates
He won't drop Ward given his goal on Saturday......the fact he brought Mitchell on at LB when Garbutt went off 9n Saturday gives an insight into his thinking on that.......for what its worth I'd go your way at the back but I dont think Critch will,.

Unfair to judge Turton on one game on the left side of central defence, surely. And really on one piece of defending.
Not judging him on the one performance. Im just not a fan. As I’ve said before I wouldn't get on a players back but it’s just an opinion.

Everybody makes mistakes. You just have to hope that one of your team mates can cover for you.
On Saturday Eky made the initial mistake, Turts couldn't keep pace with the Crewe winger, Hubby and Mitchell couldn't defend the cross.
That's not an untypical scenario. 1 out of three performs well and the goal is prevented.

Disagree

He was attacking as is the way we lost the ball in midfield and nobody either left back or 2 centre halves attacked the ball in the box

I don't mind going with Saturday's side although if we have an actual centre half in Ballard then I don't get why you'd play anyone out of position there. I'd also like to see him mix it up after half an hour and use fresh legs like Kemp and Woodburn - no point sticking these players in cotton wool.

Fair point about C.J. nullified by opposition defences marking him touch-tight, or even doubling up on him out wide. Bring him inside and let him roam. He can’t contribute as things stand.

Another balanced post , I would tend to agree with what your saying, to many changes would probably put a fly in the ointment so to speak !
Every week we should be learning something. Too many changes too quickly will mean we won't get the full cause and effect. Consistency comes from the players having an understanding of each other's game. We won't get that from constant flux.

Believe it or not, I agree with that 100%!

This is partly the reason why I felt it important to have included Turton & Husband in the team at the weekend, to try and get some continuity. If the team is constantly being changed, it'll be impossible to see what works and what doesn't.

I think we'll see minimum changes again tonight; either Ballard or Mitchell in to replace Garbutt and possibly Woodburn, but I don't know who for.

If he's putting Woodburn in, it will be for Ward with a bit of tinkering. I don't think NC is brave enough to drop Yates or CJ.

There’s a danger NC is overthinking this. You play your best players in their best positions. That includes all the new signings.

I see plenty of mentions about CJ being marked out of games with 2 players on him at all time. Well tbh that’s a failing of the ponderous build up play. It’s not like these 2 players are a weird appendage, joined at his hip. Quicker breaks and better through balls and he could escape his markers easily.

I would agree entirely if it wasn't for Ward scoring on Saturday.
The fact he did muddies the water a little, and I expect Ward to keep his place (for now) off the back of that added to a generally improved performance.
If Woodburn goes in on the left, it will at least give us an option we haven't seen this season on that side of the pitch.

If Ward stays, and I agree that a manager may think it harsh to drop him after scoring, and Woodburn plays, it can only be for Yates. I'd keep CJ as Woodburn might occupy defenders giving CJ a bit more space.

Although what else did Ward do in his main role of creating and involving the front 3? I'm not suggesting he won't start but I think the goal might be masking a deeper set issue

I agree and was suggesting he'd get dropped for Woodburn, but as Finest says he scored and we know NC isn't the bravest manager, so probably won't drop him a s a result of the goal.

Why do you say he isn’t the bravest ? He’s managing 20 odd blokes who I’m sure are questioning him all the time .He has to be brave to keep players in who are playing crap or keep players out who’s he’s brought in and want a chance

Because of his team selections, subs. I'd have dropped CJ 2 games ago or found a way to get him space.

If Woodburn player he will play on the left of a front 3

Thats his best position

Not sure why fans are always trying to play people out of position

Maybe he will start with Ward and use Woodburn as a sub.

That's not where Oxford decided he was most effective, I believe.

To give Ward some credit, he played far better on Saturday than he had prior to that.
We 100% need more from him in such a key role, but there definitely was some improvement, largely due to having Williams behind him.

If he starts tonight then barring another goal or the same leap forward in performance then I think he is on borrowed time from either Woodburn taking his spot, or Anderson (If Woodburn ends up playing left forward) when fit.

I suspect there will be a couple of changes, if anything to rest some legs and get some game time for others, October is a busy month. Possibly three changes.
