Charlie Adam again....

Just been listening to him on Five Live with Mark Chapman and Dion Dublin. At the end they asked him about his situation at the moment.
To summarise he said:
He's training at Bolton after a call from an old friend to help him get fit. He's playing in a friendly for them tomorrow. He's had offers, mentioned two from abroad and a phone call from Scotland but didn't name any clubs. Said he realises it's a different world now and any offers would be seriously down on anything pre covid and accepts that. Also his main thing is to play regular football somewhere and look to progress a coaching career.

Is it time we had another thread on should we or shouldn't we?? 😀

Spider, it’s taking a hell of a long time this Baningme deal? I’ve given up on that. Granted if Gotts comes in its no deal for Charlie but how likely is that? I don’t see Fox signing for us either. So Adam is still the no brainer.

Young midfielder from Leeds, few sources including footballinsider linked us, who are usually fairly reliable. But that was a week or so back now, it’s all gone quiet as it has with the lad from Everton.
It’s gone quiet with Bangemine.....
But he’s going somewhere otherwise he would have featured in some capacity Saturday

Surely Charlie has made enough during his spell at liverpool & Stoke, if he really wanted to return on a modest League 1 wage, I wouldn't have a problem. Guess it's up to him & NC of course.

CA has said from a recent interview that post Covid salaries will be much less and particularly for a player at this stage of a career, where clubs will want to take less risks. It is unlikely that a championship club will sign him so, unles he goes sbroad or to a Scottish club, he will be faced with the salary cap. Depends how much he wants, but the only real way to pay him would be a reaslistic basic wage and a big promotion bonus (the latter not being included in the cap). He is currently training with Bolton and is going to play in their next friendly. The Evatt project may appeal to him, especially as he may have a good chance of a promotion bonus, can do his coaching badges and it is also not far from home.
Could he do a similar job for us and on the same terms? Probably, but there is not the same Evatt connection and Critchley may want to build something different for the future. He may feel Charlie could disrupt that project.
And Charlie may decide to spend his last couple of playing years looking for a payday in the sun, perhaps in Turkey (which has plenty of money) like Gnanduilett

Sorry to shoot your theory down, but bonuses are included in the salary cap. I am sure there are other ways around it - but that is not one of them.

Would love to see him back in tangerine.. however, if he signed and had a stinking season with us would it sour his legacy at Blackpool?

Not mobile enough for
It's not gonna happen.
Agree, his ship unfortunately has sailed, he needs a top wage, yes it will be less, but he wont come back......I think he will go back up north of the border

Maybe signing-on fees could be a way of getting around the salary cap? £100K then a 2 year deal on £2K per week? Player gets his £4K but the cap remains OK?

Unfortunately, that won't work. ☹ Part of the statement from the EFL said:

"When calculating total salary spending, the ‘cap’ includes:

Basic Wages;

Taxes;

Bonuses;

Image rights;

Agents’ fees and;

Other fees and expenses paid directly or indirectly to all registered players.

Payments directly linked to a Club’s progression in cup competitions or promotion are excluded from the Cap..."

So the only way round it would be to include "progress payments" for the Cups and promotion, but that would have to apply across the board and not just to Charlie. It would be a good incentive, though.

Neither is Williams according to the Rochdale forum, I don’t know but we will find out.
Pace and mobility are a bit different. Williams is 24, Adam is 34. Williams will have the legs to run for 90 minutes. Our coaches know what they are getting.

Did you see how we played on Saturday against the toffees?? We were super fast and slick, everything on the ground. I love CA but I can't see him fitting in with that style of play. I would much rather have someone like KDH on loan or someone of his ability.

I was drooling watching some of our play and I can't wait to see the lads in action again tonight.

As I read it there is nothing to stop an individual player having a bespoke promotion bonus term in his contract and it not count for the salary cap purposes. It doesn’t have to be a collective team wide promotion scheme to count.

I can't see him fitting the playing style either. I wish him well wherever he ends his career, but I don't think he is a good fit with us anymore.

I think you have to leave sentimentality behind as this is a new era, a very different manager and style of play. I have always wanted him back, but there comes a time when you have to move on and trust the management team. I'm sure Sadler has had a conversation with NC about Adam but he will trust his coach. If we carry on playing in the style we did on Saturday then we are in for a real treat.

Correct and as I said I know nothing about him, we will find out. I was just quoting some Rochdale fans , who seem to think he has neither. I have nothing against him and I trust that Critchley & co. know what they are getting, he may be a star, as I said we will find out.

It's not gonna happen. Not mobile enough for the way we now play.
Agree with this, remember it's not the same Charlie as ten years ago and he wasn't exactly known for his pressing then.

The way we've played in friendlies doesn't seem to have any place for him.

I'd want him back at the club on some capacity at some point, but signing him now would be a sentimental throwback and we should be looking forward.

The difference is I suspect Williams wouldn’t be capable of superb corners, threading balls through the eye of a needle, 30 yard free kicks in the top corner etc etc but that doesn’t matter as long as you’ve got a good engine!

Fair points but we are playing a different way. Henderson can't do those things either but has captained Liverpool to Champions League and EPL trophies. Adam lasted 5 minutes there.

There is a real danger of having 10 headless chickens running around the pitch when things aren't going well. I'd like to see a calming influence and Charlie could be that person.

It doesn't matter how big a promotion bonus is, you need to get promoted to cash it in. Sadly, if Charlie needs the incentive of a big promotion bonus to beat the salary cap and he has offers from Blackpool and Bolton it's a no-brainer for him I'm afraid, he will be Horwich bound.
