What do we think about getting Charlie back for next season.
A bit about him here ..

Critchley revealed the Charlton Athletic winger, who the Seasiders have an option to buy, was also carrying a fitness concern.
“That was a bit of a spasm in the back, but that’s not too serious. He’s fine,” he said.
“He couldn’t quite get to the intensity of the training so because he’s not our player, we didn’t want to risk it and that’s why he’s not here.”

The problem for Charlie, and any other wide player we use, is if some folk will expect them to be able to step into and replace Josh Bowler's abilities.

Completely different player. Good touch, passing vision and delivery, didn't really come over as a dribbling at speed winger. So if we did take him it's for folk to manage their own expectations (God, I'm sounding more like work every day), and accept we're playing a different style.

1. It seems he's within our price range as we've already taken him on loan with an option to buy
2. His were the best set piece deliveries I've seen from us last season. Far more dangerous when he takes them
3. Agree he's not a pacy/dribbling winger, but maybe his fitness played a part?
4. Seen many posts saying he doesn't beat his man, but neither did Beckham 😁
5. Always seems to put a shift in and passes well.

Edit beat me to it cgp1

In the 442 we play the wingers are the only really creative outlet to get things going, I don't think he's got the pace needed for the Championship and struggles to take defenders on. He does deliver a good set piece and cross but I don't think that's enough.

Agree with this. If we are to play a similar set up and style next year he would only be a squad player as we’d need another josh bowler type.

CK seems a bit lightweight to me and the championship is a tough league to play in and i wouldn't want to pay £500.000 for someone just to take corners.
Always liked the look of Tony Sculley at Lincoln a goal scoring winger who likes to run at defenders.

Looked ok in flashes, not sure he's what we need if were going to progress, reckon there could be better available.

Personally think Dale is the more natural footballer and both are OKish and would be more than good enough in league 1. The worry is are they good enough for the championship, however trust NCs verdict.

A decent squad player but if we are to kick on we need better. Look at all the best wingers and most possess pace, great feet or the ability to deliver a good ball consistently. Whilst Kirk has reasonable delivery, I don't think he has enough in his locker to terrorise Championship defenders.

We seem to be of a generally similar opinion as to Charlie's abilities, so here's something from left field.

He has good ball control, vision, passing. Dribbling round a Championship standard fullback appears to be the issue in question.

So is there a more central attacking role for him? A lot of his skill seems suited to it. With us he'd be competing with a fit Sonny Carey, or if it wasn't to be with us I think it's worth someone looking at him in that position.

Saw in the play off final that we scored 10 goals from corners last season. I always see us as a team that we’re crap at corners but last season changed that.
A goal direct from a corner every 4 or 5 games is good return.

He's not going to take on a full back and beat him, but with his passing abilities surely if he came inside a bit he would make room for an overlapping full back like garbut.
Just a thought.

Didn't do enough in open play for me. Keshi and CJ give us nice variety on the left, I'd focus on a right winger to compete with Dale.

looks like we might not be getting him anyway. We've apparently said we don't have the funds to pay the 500k. That is if we don't sell first.

Interesting point in the o/p about fitness and not being willing to push the player as much in training because he was on loan, if he was able to train harder would we have seen more from him?

Not for me. Dale is a player that can spot moments and knows when to increase the tempo or take a chance. Kirk just plays everything at his pace irrespective of what's going on around him.

A mate of mine whose lad played in the same Crewe Academy team said Kirk had 'loads of talent - no application' when he was younger. That's not far off from what I've seen of him although he was excellent against us for Crewe in L1. Given how much Critchley was yelling at him in the Derby game, I'd be surprised if we went for him especially as he's probably on a decent whack at Charlton.

2 years & he’ll be a great prospect I reckon, take him now and use him as a squad player is the way forward in my opinion as long as he doesn’t cost a lot of money

I agree with the comments that we don't need both Dale and Kirk. And out of the two, Dale was the right one to bring in imo. While much of his time on the pitch hasn't been productive, he has demonstrated some real quality too - that goal at Barnsley was absolutely superb. He's a player that actually has the ability to change a game and I think can be developed into a useful player. On the other hand, Kirk seems to have some final ball quality, but I'm not sure he has that unpredictability that you need to open up defences in this league.
Dale was Crewe's POTY in our promotion season, not Kirk. So clearly Crewe fans thought similar.

Thought Charlie did okay when he played but given we have a limited pot of money for transfers it’s a nay from me. The money needs to be spent very wisely and in essential positions.
