Children returning to school

To me it makes very little sense to prioritise the YR/Y1
Surely they are the age groups most easily home-schooled ?
I’m not buying it that they were targeted to best facilitate parents to return to work as the Y2-5 can hardly be left on their own either can they

It's a stupid idea what if you have more than one child then guess what you still have to stay off and can't work.
Bring them all back or keep them closed.
The summer holidays are going to be another issue who looks after the Children in the past it was the norm for Grandparents the most at risk or are we going to have a situation as most have gone back to work then have to then some have take another 6 weeks off.

Staying out of this one to a degree but monitoring attendance will be interesting. I suspect lots of parents will keep their kids off.
A positive of that is that it will be easier for Primary schools to ensure they can follow the guidelines of a max of 15 to a class...initially.
As for the Years going back. I'm not convinced Year 6 rather than 5 is educationally valuable. I get transition etc etc but SATS are cancelled.
On a personal note I expected either Year 7 and/ or Year 10 back. Awaiting instructions on what face to face actually means.

if we don't but the educational arguement it could be to test out social distancing measures with the two extremes of behaviour?

Are there actual 'guidelines?'

It surely won't. Politically it would be a disaster for them. They've gone this far, it would be mentalism to not go further.

I'm no economist but I'd guess they're already committed to a shed load of debt that will define Boris' spending options for the rest of his time in office, whether that's 4 or 9 years.

What's he got to lose (personally) by extending support for an extra 3 weeks or a month or whatever it is?

He doesn't care less about what his successors inherit, be they red or blue or anything else. He just cares about winning next time and chucking people and businesses to the wolves at the end of all this will stick in people's memories.

He's many things is Boris, but he's astute politically.
Unfortunately for him - as with all Prime Ministers eventually - his room for dictating social & economic policy has been tied down by events. Whatever he saw himself as doing to shape the country has disappeared. His only hope now is to get us through the virus crisis and hope that the electorate judge him kindly next time.

My lad had to go to school for a bit, till I got told I could work at home after all. I didn't like it but there we go. What could I do? I completely get your concern and sense of injustice

Sorry, I'm just a bit world weary today.
The morning after the brilliant match last night?

A 4 month extension of furlough is longer than expected. Going to take a long time to recover that outlay.

YR and Y1 are the hardest age group to home school effectively. So much of their learning is done interactively at school and they cannot work as independently as older children. The older children can use the internet more effectively and as they age are generally more aware of what their next steps for learning are and how to develop this.
YR and Y1... Easy enough to child mind, hard to TEACH.
