Chile

Bit worrying. Not long out of lockdown and hospitals overrun with Covid again apparently?
Just seen this on News at 10, apologies if already covered.
Ahead of us in vaccinations carried out in terms of double doses, and one third of the population having had at least one dose.
Stay careful folks!

Over half the nation’s population live in and around Santiago. The poblaciones are communities which a European would be shocked by. With only half the nation jabbed it’s no surprise that early lifting of restrictions has caused problems. All seems a bit hasty. I used to live there and there is much to be admired about how Chile has progressed since the days of dictatorship. This seems a mistake though.

It sounds like the Chinese vaccine, which although it has a 90 per cent protection level is less effective after one dose than the Pfizer vaccine, and would need apparently a 70-80 per cent single dose take up to prevent the type of upsurge they are seeing.
Seems like they have jumped the gun a bit in easing restrictions. Just heading into Winter there as well of course.
Hopefully we won’t be making the same mistake!

Chile-home of the Tierra del Fuego which many thought was Croydon and Lewisham for a while.

Seem to curtail when they stopped residents filling up at Catford Texaco with milk bottles.

China's top disease control official has said the efficacy of the country's Covid vaccines is low, in a rare admission of weakness.

In a press conference, Gao Fu added that China was considering mixing vaccines as a way of boosting efficacy.

China has developed four different vaccines approved for public use, though some trials abroad had suggested efficacy as low as 50%.

Meanwhile much of the EU is rushing for the similarly unproven Russian vaccine.

Surely not. Santiago has expanded a lot recently but it cannot be half Chile's population overall? There is nowhere else so big, Valparaiso / Vina del Mar are quite big. There are loads of small cities throughout Chile. Just took me by surprise, happy to be corrected.

Yeah it’s about that. Something like 7m live in the metropolitan region around Santiago. And many of those who are resident in other cities also come in to Santiago for work and live there solely for employment whilst ‘resident’ outside.
Valparaiso is a fabulous place and Vina is really Santiago upper class by the sea.
