City status

Colchester, Doncaster, Wrexham and Milton Keynes amongst other to get City status.

Is part of the qualification to have a poor football team?
Meaningless.
It’s not meaningless to the 30,000 good people of Douglas in the Isle of Man.
And, yes, FC Isle of Man will be in the North West Counties League Premier Division (9th tier) next season having just been promoted.

Meaningless? Nor, do I say, to the citizens of Port Stanley in the Falklands (population 2,460).
Precisely what will it tangibly mean to such people?

Will they be able to travel free on buses or something? Will their unemployment benefits increase or gas bills be reduced? Will it end food banks or see crowds of illegal immigrants accidently descend upon it believing it to be a much bigger place?

Can existing cities like London apply to be named London Village to balance things out now cities can be absolutely anything or nothing?

It's another way of bribing morons. These places are shitty non entities, cue the mouth breathers getting a hard on at the prospect.

Dunfermline has approximately the same population as Lytham St Annes and Douglas is a similar size to Fleetwood. Looks like the govt is going out of its way to keep the provinces happy again. Still, I suppose it's an improvement on the city of St David's in Wales which has just 1600.

St David's has been a city for almost a thousand years.

Tangible? Not much.
Though Port Stanley does have an international airport. 😂
