Generally impressed with the professional approach the club takes now, only really commenting when there’s something worth commenting about, ensuring any news is released by the club and seemingly shutting down any leaks.

I do wonder though if they’re still lacking somewhat on the marketing and PR front. There’s been some decent content from week 1 of training but aside from the initial interview with Appleton nothing much since.

We know there a new training ground and east stand planned. Works literally just begun on clearing land for the pitches etc behind the North. We’ve got multiple new staff in, all the players back at the club for the first time in a long time (including the youngsters who headed out on loan) there’s been big developments at Squires Gate and the clubs generally moving in a positive direction…

Yet. Very few interviews (yes I know the new staff are busy but 1 hour of media time could create a lot of positive content) plus all the players… maybe an interview with some of the new kids as they look forward to the season ahead. The internationals on their performances / experiences ?
Some more detail on the facilities soon to be put in place behind the North ?

A new apps been released with no fanfare whatsoever. Limited marketing of the new junior memberships. The only info about Squires Gate came from the groundsman and Jerry wandering around the car park.

It should be a really exciting time with so much positive stuff happening. I feel the club aren’t making the most of it though. More exposure, more fanfare, more detail generally could really whet the fans appetite for the season ahead, get merchandise and tickets selling and build interests in memberships, the app etc.

I agree, Peterborough have really good interviews with Grant McCann where they go through all sorts of stuff - reasons a player leaves/why a player(s) was/were recruited, fitness updates etc etc - that would be good with Appleton as we get very little now. Don’t get me wrong the media team do a good job overall but we have been in pre season for over a week now and nothing from Appleton apart from one min at the end of Fridays video.

BUT

Where's Critchley's goodbye - Judas never want to hear from him ever again
Where's the new signings / they are shit anyway
Where's the getting rid of dead wood / could have played a role - bit hasty in my opinions
The new shirt is shit/wrong colour / I'll be buying one to go over my gut / adults in football gear - why'd you bother
The ST sales are crap and the prices for walk-on's are too expensive
The portacabins are only that - I want a new training facility NOW
I want to see a sign of intent which isn't just words on paper
Why haven't we met Jake's latest squeeze/why do we need to know he's gay etc etc

I actually think they can't win; whatever they do

Most people know where to get the information they need, when they need it - much more and it gets filed under spam.

I’d really like to see an interview with Apter, Daniels, Mariette etc. And with some of the characters at the club in Jerry Yates, Keogh and Keshi etc there’s some real star men to be utilised in selling the club to the next generation

Have to disagree, it's called good business acumen and marketing. If you just leave it to the customer to come and find you, they probably won't.

Fully agree.

Football is being treated differently by HMG with the introduction of an Independent Regulator precisely because clubs hold monopoly positions.

You actually think that someone who wants Blackpool merchandise, match tickets etc wouldn't know where to find it? We seem to do OK when we're successful on the pitch with 30 odd thousand knowing how to get tickets to Wembley etc.

It'll be good to see the redevelopments go ahead, but other than a few train spotter types and perhaps Lee Charles for commercial reasons, most people will take a look once and go 'that's nice' (for the training ground) as for the ground, again, people will only care if they can get a seat with an unobstructed view and a nice pie IF the product on the pitch is good.

Anybody with the slightest hint of wanting to know whether it's worth forking out £25 to watch, will know by looking at the league table and reading the endless feeds on various media and ITV for highlights.

Football is different.

I think the club tends to forget about the basics at times.

Like when purchasing a season ticket, there is no information on how to use them at the turnstiles.

When they announced that last year's season ticket cards would be the same for this season, they didn't include that you'll need to collect a new one if you're changing seats, etc.

There isn't any information yet on whether the Southport game will be streamed either.

I think you’re forgetting who actually consumes this sort of content and it’s certainly not the demographic of this board ! Social Media content (which the club drastically lacks) is primarily consumed by a younger generation - of which rely on parents to fund their tickets / merchandise. The club needs to market itself NOT for the purposes of me and you but for those young adults and children who are a lot more likely to be swayed by it.

Not really no, football isn't that different from any other business. Promoting a business can only have a positive effect, so it's essential to have good pr and marketing.

I think due to how prevalent sponsorships are to football clubs, there is more to lose with bad PR.

A lot of thought has gone into your post. Well done. Perhaps it's something you may want to share with the Club's media team.

As Simon Sadler said in the aftermath of the Appleton appointment - club staff keep an eye on the message board. Better it’s discussed on here by many than just one crackpot messages the club to suggest they do things differently !! I may well let the SLO run with it at the next SDM if things don’t improve and I can’t get an invite myself.

There’s obviously lots that needed to be done and loads that still needs doing to drag the Club into the new millennium, but some of the marketing and PR could probably be improved.

In particular the whole area of Ticket Sales and generating the buzz around the place to encourage sales…. I suppose it’s entirely possible that sales are going fantastically well and there’s no need to do anything in particular, but on the face of it (at least from a fan perspective) it feels a little flat at the moment.

Obviously losing Critchley, limited transfer activity so far and a slightly underwhelming managerial appointment might be contributing to that…., but it just feels like an area that is lacking. In fact it was not entirely dissimilar last season, despite promotion… We probably could and should have sold many more ST’s really.

By contrast the knobbers seem to have managed to create a bit of a buzz and momentum around ticket sales and this season… perhaps aided by beating us at their place in front of a capacity crowd and pricing tickets to sell …

Hard to put your finger in what’s needed, but for me we need someone (a front man) from within the Club to step to the fore and do the whole inspirational piece…

I tend to think that Simon and Ben are more about practicality getting things done than enjoying life in front of the camera, but we could probably do with a PR guy to stir up the interest and excitement (because whilst there’s loads to be excited about, you can guarantee that fans will always find a reason to be negative, in the absence of information) and you need that regular outlet of positivity, across all forms of media….you need to get the bandwagon rolling amd keep it moving so that people feel inspired to jump on board…

When Ollie was here he kind of took on that PR role, but I’m not sure that is really MA’s forte either. He’s really another one whom quietly goes about his business.

In fairness it was probably the one thing that Owen Oyston was very good at (of course we don’t want to resort to bullshit like he did), but a lot more shouting about the training ground, the new ground development, the new season etc.. especially when we need to sell tickets….

Probably best to contact the SLO regardless to give it the best chance of being seen.

I have noticed on many other football club youtube channels that a lot of content is done with a host.

It would be nice to have a face attached to the Tangerine TV content apart from Ged Mills.

I've got a soon to be 19 year old and a 13 year old - they know where to find the information they need; follow Twitter, will no doubt get the App and they live 150 miles from Blackpool and know what's going on - or in the case of signings - not what's going on.

Exactly right, commercial confidentiality is one thing, but the club take it to its Nth degree. If it gets any more secretive it might as well not publish a fixture list, just in case anyone finds out when we are playing.😁

Well it’s a good job the club will survive on your 18 and 13 year olds business alone ! The fact is the club needs as broad a fanbase as possible. It needs to reach as many people as possible. There’s no need to market itself to season ticket holders and lifelong fans. That markets already pretty secure but it needs new blood always.

But we're not talking about your 19 year old and 13 year old.
Missing the point if two young lads who live miles away can source info so can any of us old farts.

I'm not interested it what players have to say until the season kicks off what they going to talk about where they've been on holiday?
We demand far too much nowadays because of social media but the one thing I do agree with living in the town marketing of Season Tickets has been poor.

The content recently hasn't been that bad, I enjoy the training videos and when the season kicks off, there are plenty of interviews and such. There could always be more, but I think the club is doing a fine job for what they have at the moment.

People need to remember just how bad overall content and communication was with the Oystons, what we have is chalk and cheese compared to those days.

I wholeheartedly agree about your point regarding communication in general, I very much like that the club will not comment unless they have to or things are finalized for a player/staff hire.

It's not as exciting for the fans to hear multiple links a day, but it is the best course of action for the club.

The first Summer under Sadler in 2019 if I remember correctly just about every signing the club made had been known and announced days in advance from leaks, it was exciting for fans, but I can't help but feel that it ultimately hurt the club by letting other people control the narrative.

It's safe to say that anything we hear about the club that isn't an official announcement is just agent talk, which somewhat puts me at ease because I know that the club are working hard in the background and aren't getting swept up in the hype.

I agree 100% with the o/p and have touched on this before. I'm not looking for an exclusive I just think the Club could be a bit more inclusive.

This is a good thread, some constructive points well made. I share many of the sentiments already expressed too.

I suspect the club’s approach stems from the top, because Sadler is clearly wary about anything that goes out (didn’t we have to wait over a week for the minutes of a fans meeting to be released at one point?). As touched upon by others, in some respects that can be a good thing in terms of leaks and so on, but at other times it does make the club appear a little standoff-ish, if that’s a word.

Not a major negative, but I’d say communication is certainly something that can be improved upon.

Can be summed up in a sentence, " Great strides have been made but still more to do, further to go."

I'd also like to see other stuff pushed even more.

I'd like to see us be more creative with some things, incentives for ST holders if they get a new ST holder to buy maybe they get something.

Similar with match tickets, encourage people to bring new people via incentives.

New fan special deals, even leaflet drops nowt wrong with trying to grow the club.

But yeah as for communication it's improving but still lots can be done.

Shutting down leaks? There's more info than ever coming out. We basically found out about everyone they interviewed for the managers job!

Out of interest, bar the social media releases that have happened already, what additional fanfare do you have in mind for the app launch?

Would have thought they could have added some interesting content, perhaps only available on the app to encourage useage. Or even provide some sort of 10% off at the club shop voucher for the first however many downloads, or even some sort of prize game etc. Just something to encourage people to go out of their way to seek the app out. Some will be happy just using the website or relying on Twitter. The app should offer something different/more (and whilst it clearly does in terms of ease of use) that’s not necessarily going to be clear to everyone, especially those who may have a smart phone but aren’t tech savvy enough to even truly understand what an app is or that it can be downloaded (sadly my old man falls into that category!). From going off what I’ve seen so far an app like this could be reason enough for some technophobes to upgrade their old phone for a basic smart phone just so they can use the app. I just think more information, more attention and more thought could have gone into something very positive which would have made it even more special and highlighted just how good things are at the club now.
Feel like we have an open goal and the club are opting not to shoot.

Edit: To add - some cheesy video with the likes of Jerrry or Keogh explaining how to use the app or how good it is would have been a nice touch. Not necessarily for me (or most on here) but that’s easy and pretty much marketing gold

I'd like to see more behind the scenes stuff and sit down chats with the ticket office staff, groundsman, kit man etc . Not all of them will be comfortable in front of a camera but, if you keep it brief, I bet some of them have some funny stories to tell.

In comparison to most Championship clubs I get the feeling our media team is a much smaller one and those videos, for instance, would take a day to shoot, edit and put music behind. Maybe they should employ some of the local media college kids who have just graduated?
