Colin Calderwood Joins Blackpool's Coaching Staff

Will NC still be picking the team?. And what influence will CC have from the bench, subs and tactics????

Anybody know what his last job was because it didnt last long? He was expected to join up with Chris Houghton again 3 weeks ago at Forest but he had already accepted a job opportunity that week but i cant remember what it was now.
Im happy he's here, we need that bit of experience.
How do you know it wasnt this job?

Just had a check on the internet. Calderwood was appointed head coach at Northampton Towns football academy at the start of this month and that scuppered a chance to rejoin Houghton at Forest.
Let's hope he's at Blackpool longer!

Before the season, I was certain we would go up automatically, with a good chance of even winning the league, but performances to date have been grim, to say the least, and the thought of relegation doesn't bear thinking about.
When it comes down to A-MANS-A, Neil Critchley needs somebody with him that will stabilise, then improve us as we go on, because something has to give soon, and it would probably have cost him his job.

Can you imagine Critchley trying to tell Calderwood what to do? Ain't gonna happen, he'll be Critch the bitch in no time.

I actually see this as an appointment that suggests to me that Critchley isn't going anywhere. He is unlikely to want to be demoted and moved to a youth coach - why would he, he had that role at Liverpool. But I think SS sees him as absolutely crucial to the clubs strategy of developing young players. If we were to see an end to his tenure as manager, I think Calderwood would've replaced Neil. This appointment is to ensure NC is a success so we can tap into his experience with developing our young players, rather than a warning sign that his job isn't safe.

I'm not saying Critchley would never get sacked, but I think if anyone is getting excited that this is a signal he will soon be replaced you're going to be severely disappointed.

Good appointment, good track record and lots of experience. Most successful young managers need that wise head next to them and I think he'll help a lot. I definitely feel more confident of seeing eventual improvements now, and as many have been saying - they all just need time.

A smart move. An older, experienced head to compliment what Critchley has been trying out. It makes all sorts of sense. It shows a very admiral ability in owner, club and manager to recognise there is nothing wrong in adapting an approach and looking at options. Once again makes me feel confident Sadler is very capable of, and committed to, taking this club places.

Blackpool Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Colin Calderwood as an Assistant Head Coach.

The vastly experienced 55-year-old becomes another valuable addition to Neil Critchley’s coaching staff at Bloomfield Road.

Promoted four times as a player with Swindon Town, a team he captained from a young age, Calderwood also represented the likes of Mansfield Town, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa during his playing career, as well as Scotland internationally.

Upon retirement, Calderwood returned to Tottenham in a coaching role, before guiding both Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest to promotions as a manager.

A further promotion then followed as an assistant to Chris Hughton at Newcastle United in 2010, with the pair going on to work together at Birmingham City, Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

In recent years, Calderwood has also been an assistant to Steve Bruce at Aston Villa and had a stint managing Cambridge United in Sky Bet League Two.

Neil Critchley said:

“I’m pleased to welcome Colin to the Club. Colin’s experience and achievements in the game speak for themselves. We feel he has the perfect qualities to both complement and enhance the existing staff we have in place here at Blackpool.”

Colin Calderwood added:

“I’m absolutely delighted to join Blackpool. I’ve seen a lot of the division now because I’ve been scouting for a team in League One.

“I’m looking forward to working with Neil and the rest of the staff. I’ll be there to aid and assist in the best way possible and use my good experiences of football to help everybody within the Club.”
He gets sacked from every job he’s ever had in management. Another drain on the wage bill in an attempt to bail out a wrong appointment. This season has already gone, just a battle to stay up when it should have a minimum of play offs with the backing Critchley has had. What a bloody letdown he’s been.

With the cap and the number of players in the squad we’ve been a bit on our uppers haven’t we? Coach Calders needs to improve the work ethic and get rid of the loafers.

This could be a shrewd move. Although he has a very mixed record as a manager (who can forget Forest’s astonishing capitulation against Yeovil in the playoffs) he’ll bring some much needed experience. He may have the reputation as the archetypal dour Scot producing teams with little imagination or flair, but that may be just what is needed at the moment.

Well there's never a dull moment since Sadler took over. I really hope it works out for for him & us.

A big reason Grayson was successful here in 2007 was Parkes as his assistant. Lets hope that Calderwood has that same influence on Critchley.
We had Grayson, Parkes & Thommo! So I don't have any problem with Calderwood's appointment.

Will give NC some much needed support, take some weight off his shoulders and maybe he can set him straight on some of the issues we’ve been going on about, like a stuck record.
e.g. More shots on target. Moving the ball forward more quickly. Improving free kicks & corners. Passing in final 3rd.

Head of academy at Northampton but that wouldn’t start till 2021 so surprised if that the reason he didn’t Join back up with Houghton especially as allowed to walk into this job.

Just what we need, I do wonder how it’s going to work though, I know many assistant managers are older and more experienced than their bosses, but NC is particularly inexperienced. Will CC accept carrying him if that becomes the situation.

So it’s 5 o’clock and we have just lost to Burton Albion, who’s fault will it be ? Reading some of the posts on here a lot seem to have NC replaced already. Will CC get a pass until he’s actually in the hot seat ? What then if he loses his next 5 ? Will it still be NC fault or will we turn on SS.

Can't wait! How does this fit the exciting attacking football template?

Well there's never a dull moment since Sadler took over.
Don't count your chickens, yet!

He probably got a life ban at Forest after the Yeovil playoff game.
