He's been released from prison after serving 33 years for a double rape and murder, albeit under supervision.

Do we think that this is an appropriate length of sentence? It's a tough one, he has served more than half his life but as he is still only 61 I'm a bit surprised they don't consider him a danger. Or maybe they do. Thoughts?

Under supervision for the rest of his life, not sure what that actually entails but if it includes 24 hours surveillance the costs to the taxpayers would be horrendous as the batsard could quite easily live another 30 years. Even basic supervision wont come cheap!

Got to be totally honest
Crimes like this deserve the death penalty
He forfeited his right to breath when he snuffed out the life of those children
I'm not in favour of capital punishment for every murder but child killers /rapists should be given the ultimate sentence

It’s a tough one isn’t it, if he committed these crimes in the USA he would of got around 500 years and died in jail, or possibly the death penalty. Be interesting to see what some of the more Liberal posters think.

I understand part of prison is about reform, but despair at those that say it’s not about punishment also.

Of course it is, and in cases like this punishment trumps reform. He shouldn’t be let out.

If he moved in next door to me I’d never sleep at night again.
RIP his victims 😞

The fact that the murders were 3 years apart means he never felt remorse and he will always be capable of carrying another one out should the opportunity arise.
He should not be in prison his life should have been ended on being found guilty

Is he going to get something like witness protection where he gets his name changed etc? I certainly hope not because he’s going to have a tough time of it .

It's acknowledged by most authorities (the odd one will disagree no matter what the circs) that paedophiles cannot be reformed. He's a paedophile and a child murderer & can never be trusted not to reoffend.
He'll no doubt have a new identity, will blend into a new area and it's impossible for the authorities to have him under 24 hour surveillance.
He's an extremely dangerous individual and the old, out of touch with society judges should have considered the question - 'would I want him living next door to my grandchildren or their school?'.

Parole Boards can be a total joke, and in this case reinforces my opinion. The senior judiciary at times can be baffling with sentences they convey.

This guy should never have seen the light again, let alone allowed to 'enjoy' his life again. The two girls and families will never have that luxury.

This utter piece of human detritus should have had a captive bolt shot through his head, not kept alive at taxpayers expense.

The people that paroled that murdering bastard should have him living next door to them. It’s mindless to let him out. If it had been one of my daughters I know what I would be doing now he’s out. Someone will know where he ends up.

OK, here's my unpopular take, the justice system is not there to make you feel better about yourself. How long would you last in prison, a day? Pitchfork will be just a shadow of what he was 33 years ago and our excellent parole board rarely gets it wrong. What he deserves and what we actually do is what makes us a civilised society he's done his time and a lot of it. nothing can bring those girls back. No man is beyond redemption as hard as that can be to believe.

I’m a liberal but in this case I don’t really see what his redemption has to do with anything. HIS situation is the last thing that needs consideration. He committed an awful crime and ended 2 young lives and probably destroyed many others.

You are more than right but you either believe in the death penalty or you don't. A whole life sentence, in rare cases sadly necessary, is the death penalty by any other name. Harsher sentences makes for harsher criminals, a truth you can't escape no matter how hard it seems.

A full life sentence isn’t a death penalty as we know it, it’s a life sentence.
He absolutely should have served a life sentence.

Had he recieved that sentence you'd hear no argument from me but he's done his time as directed by the judge. Acts of kindness to people who don't deserve it has a power of it's own. I tell you what though I'd hate to have to explain this to the victims families.

Its a hard one, what is the criminal justice system about? His crimes are so abhorrent he doesn't deserve to be released, much like other brutal murderers.
That said there are a lot of crimes that are unpalatable but people can be educated and changed, that's what the prison system should be about, but fails massively.

I can fully understand your argument and in some circumstances there is another view to consider. But this isn’t one of those circumstances.

If anything, his release and the subsequent media reaction will cause more harm and hurt to the victims families. Reliving events that have probably ruined families for good. And I appreciate that in most murder cases this will be the case and not all life tariffs will mean a flt. I’ve no idea how we prioritise one of the other, but this feels like one that should be prioritised.

33 years ago he was a dangerous murderer but how can anyone decide now that he wouldn t commit similar
awful crimes again paedophiles are cunning dangerous people and this one may have duped a
parole board of do gooders for the sake of public safety he should remain in prison.

He is a mega dangerous psychopath child killer and should never have been released. They would have fought tooth and nail to keep him inside but his legal team, that we will have paid for have done their job and the Judge has capitulated. I am surprised the Home Secretary didn't step in and block it. Managing people like him in the community and in prison and psychiatric hospitals was my specialist job for over 6 years and I have spent so many hours with sleepless nights fighting to keep dangerous bastards like this in prison or hospital and it is a real fight against the legal system. There will be all sorts of procedures in place just in case someone like this is released and believe me the cost in money and also resources is incredible.

He won't have changed and what will happen to the judge and all this who fought for his release when he rapes and murders another child. Massive, massive mistake releasing him.

I've thought about this overnight and concluded the cnut deserved a bullet in his head. Same with Huntley and the like, some crimes can never be excused or rehabilitation be undertaken. It's not like he got in a car pissed up, he raped and murdered two girls

Parole board don’t see him as a danger anymore - totally irrelevant to me, he raped and murdered two 15 yo girls in separate incidents.
He should die in jail.
HHard labour should also be added to help pay for their keep.

Well said lala I know what I would like to do with the bastard too ** soft this government he pleaded guilty ,so that should mean life behind bars ,at the very least ,scum like him should be given the same as he gave those two children I will leave the rest your imagination !.

One wonders how the parents of those two young girls feel now (if they are alive that is)?
Two young women, just coming into the prime of their lives, have it all snatched away by an evil paranoid moron.
If one of them had been mine I would have been at the prison gate to wait for him to come out.
