We have the two metre rule, the one and a half metre rule, the rule of six, and now according to the PM, a stitch in time save nine.

All we need now is twelve angry men and four and twenty blackbirds for a full house....

What’s everybody else’s alternative?
Weighing up the NHS capacity and the economy?
For me this is initial light touch precautions subject to change.
Some despise any restrictions, so this isn’t popular.
Some want more restrictions so this isn’t popular.
If anyone out there has a solution that perfectly balances everybody’s wants and needs plus those of the vulnerable, the NHS and the economy let’s have a detailed proposal from you 🤔

A decent testing and tracing system he promised would be ready 4 months ago might be a start. Use local contact tracing run by public health bodies rather than funding incompetent companies like Serco and the even less accountable companies that they've been sub contracting to would actually show some intent beyond how many contracts he can give to his mates.

Lala, I agree substantially with all your points. 👍

BUT (lol)

What gets my goat (odd phrase that) is Boris saying that it is all the public's fault for not following the rules. There is an element of that, but it was always the inevitable cost of pushing everyone back to work, opening schools and opening hospitality. Instead of the blame game, why not accept and explain that, and say we need to all pitch in together to look after each other, to keep business and schools going. And when he bangs on about everyone following the rules, no exceptions, big fines, I just see eye tests in Durham.

I get that in terms of Durham 👍
I personally didn’t feel he was blaming the public for the possibility of a future peak. More making us aware of the need for adherence going forward, and I can’t argue with that.

Make your mind up Baz, is this covid situation a joke or not?
Making light of some of the guidelines yet saying Moyes and a couple of hammers contracting the virus is serious 🤷‍♂️

Hindsight is sooooooo easy. Everyone is an expert after the event and everyone knows how to balance lives and the economy.

Fair points LaLa. There’s lots of different theories, but no easy solutions. If there were they’d have been found.

But I suspect the reactions and levity you’re hearing are because people don’t have confidence in the person delivering the message. From his “world beating” test and trace system, to his recent “moonshot”, and now his granny says “a stitch in time” homilies.

To answer your question of what should be done:

1. Ring fence care homes. Covid should just not be allowed in. How? And how do you handle discharges from NHS hospitals that need the beds? Nightingale hospitals could take the discharged Covid patients rather than care homes.
2. A reliable testing system. Not the shambles we have currently where people are sent miles away because of a defective algorithm that apparently can only work in straight lines.
3. A reliable tracking system. Not the promised “world beating” system. Just one that works to a reasonable level of efficiency and success.
4. No more multi million pound contracts awarded to mates who have proven time and again that they can’t deliver.
5. The rules genuinely applying to everyone.

Would be a starting point. And it’s not asking the world. Just basic management skills really.

Shooting the messenger and not the message isn’t always productive, and we all know what ‘ a stitch in time means’ that’s just a superficial snobbery objection in my opinion.
Care homes still aren’t allowing unrestricted vists in my experience, and no visits at all for most relatives.
Nightingale hospitals are on standby 👍 Funny how many were quick to blame the government for the waste of expense in building them when they weren’t utilised during the first wave 🤔
Test and trace , and testing, could do better 👍
There isn’t a government who could handle this in a perfect way, not possible and NO government is perfect, or would be.
I accept sensible critique but some of the endless sniping is just that, sniping.

I genuinely don't remember anyone saying the Nightingales were a waste of money. However, rather than having them stand empty during the summer lull they should have been used on the backlog of minor ops such as hips and knees that were totally cancelled.

Oh I remember Wiz, very well.
Either way they are there now ready to serve any purpose they can. I for one am pleased about that 👍

Here's two more numbers for you.

47 and 89. They're the x in 100,000 confirmed cases in the last 7 days in Wyre and Leeds. Guess which one is not in local lockdown? How does that work?

Any ideas on how to deal with the tens of thousands of people not getting the treatment they need for other illnesses ? Also the tens of thousands of people who will not get diagnosed as there is just not the facilities to be seen due to Covid. Are these people to be left behind due to the extremely low mortality rate of covid. Currently no24 on the list of things killing people.

They were set up to cater specifically for Covid and so I don’t think that was an option.

Economic decisions are playing a part undoubtedly.
But that’s the whole point. All aspects have to be considered and balanced now.
Let’s face it, without a vaccine then herd immunity whilst not wrecking the NHS and economy is what we have to work with whether we like it or not.

It's because we're a freedom loving people unlike the Krauts with their extensive local track and trace. We didn't defeat the Bosch so they could make mugs of us during a global pandemic.
