Cracking penalty

The penalty aside which was brilliantly taken, that was Evans best game for months. He deserved to stay on when Evo changed it , hopefully he can find consistency now .
Yet look at the match thread and he was getting dog's abuse as the game was in progress. That's the problem with real time knee jerking / blindly following your own agenda / being a stupid idiot.

Played well yesterday Evans. Quality midfielder but unfortunately some of our more thicko fans seem to associate putting your foot on the ball and playing passes to feet with being a luxury. They’d rather have someone charging around at 100 miles an hour into tackles because they never have the ball under control and permanently lose possession.

Fair play to Evans for taking the responsibility.

Fletcher said he was willing to take it (who's under no pressure from the negative boo boys), so credit to Evans for shrugging off the doubters.
Shows a strong personality.
Like the strong personality bit. It's spot on (Geditt!?!?), no, seriously he stepped up and was willing to take the stick if he missed. Credit to him.

The power gave the keeper no chance even though it was a 'nice' height and he went the right way. You don't stop those.

Would you say he missed having Brown around him?

Evatt's system suits Evans really well and he plays a role very similar to Sheehan from Evatt's time at Bolton. For us to play the way we want to, having a centre mid to keep everything ticking and keep the ball is one of the most important positions on the pitch and Evans is probably the most suited player we have to do that.

He played well, but he does slow down our play and Bowler for example needs a pass zipping into him, to be fully effective in his new role. The same applies to our wide players. It’s all too lethargic, stroking passes backwards & sideways. It’s so easy to nullify our threat. Too often, he puts the onus on players behind him, who don’t have the technical ability. It’s easy to look good when you are playing passes in your own half, not under any pressure.

He did spray a few nice long passes, but if we are to open up teams, we’ve got to put more pace on the shorter ground passes through the midfield line.

We are less threatening with him starting, we just don’t operate as fluently as a team. I’m not saying he’s a poor player, but I think he’s now a player that needs to be used when we need to control a game from a winning position.

Obviously you have a different opinion and I respect that.

Would this be our first penalty kick this season.. Saw it on the concourse TV .. Well taken.. Got us back into the game at the right time..

It was 100% clear in a number of games that Evans controls the pace tactically. Orient away was the best example. Orient were at us but the introduction of Evans turned the game around. We managed to take gradual control as a consequence. Football is not about lumping it forward and hoping; that’s Sunday league.

Agree with most of this. Evans was very good yesterday. Gets unfair criticism cos he keeps possession and passes the ball rather than lumping it. Always shows for the ball, always brave to take it even when under pressure but for some it's like they wait all game for the first misplaced pass and jump on it or even blaming him for things that are nothing to do with him. Strange.
Anyway long may it continue and his beat game for a while.

Agree with the above comments regarding Evans...

Thought Honeyman had a poor game yesterday; at fault for the first goal and would have brought Albie on for him a little earlier

The fickleness continues.
Be honest, how many thought his inclusion from the off was a bad choice by Evo.
I’ll bet all those who want rid of him did.

If you read what I posted I referred to short ground passes through midfield, in to our danger players, Bowler in particular. That is not lumping it forward.

Honeyman may not have had a good game but as for the first goal, he was a midfielder charging back into a space where a left sided CH and a LWB should have been but had gone walkabout somewhere.

yep, well said. Seems to me many of our fans don't appreciate that type of player. A player who gets and gives and keeps play ticking over. Barry Ferguson and Jay Spearing came in for a lot of criticism from people on here over their style and Evans is now another. That said, there is no doubt his form has dipped from when he first came.

I thought Evan's did well yesterday. Much better than Honeyman who switched off and was far too easy to get past for their first goal and constantly gave the ball away.
IMO Evo's not getting the best out of Honeyman in his "process".
George needs to be given a bit more freedom to go and disrupt and chase the ball rather than chase the open spaces.
Evans had 95 touches, Josh had 51 and George had 40. Add to that Honeyman won 3/5 ground duels (Bowler 5/7, Evans 3/4). The only one of the three to win an aerial duel was Josh 1/1.
That doesn't sit right with me.

He goes back because he has no options to hit in front of him, i think sometimes he is ahead of other players in his thinking.
This was the classic argument for Norburn. Watch Evans closely, doesn’t even look forward a lot of the time, just knocks it backwards.

He’s okay, don’t get me wrong, just slows down the whole team imo and if brown had been available yesterday instead we’d have played a lot better.

At what point do we say the player isn’t getting enough out of themselves?

So that’s the last manager and this one? What about the player?

I expected better things from Honeyman than we’ve seen in tangerine…

I think its beholden upon the Manager to get the best out each player and assemble them in a way to get the best out of them all put together as a team.
Not easy that's for sure.

That was Evans best game for some time. I thought he could have done better with his closing down for their second goal, but generally he did ok!

I watch him very closely don't worry about that, and he is a good player, no problem with him being in the team for me, he is a far better player than Norburn

Criticism on here for Ashworth and Coulson for not being in in the left back position, leaving Honeyman on their man for the first goal. Ridiculous because we were setting up to defend a free kick! Coulson and Ashworth not being there was completely planned, as we were expecting them to go long, and fair play to their keeper for recognising that and playing it quickly.

I'll also say some saying Evans only goes backwards is a complete heel turn considering so many on here gave him a bollocking for always trying to play the killer ball and losing the ball very often.

Credit to Evans for scoring the penalty though, don't think he's had one saved or missed whilst he's been taking them for us. Always gets them in the corner with power, the most confident I've been in a penalty taker in years.
