For clearly abandoning his football principles and for taking a more pragmatic approach to winning football matches

Possession stats and tikki takka football don't always get the points

Thats another great win with us having less of the ball than the opposition

Who would have thought that target man Gary Madine would be a key player in the system

Long may it continue

Winning football all day long ...

We’ve hit it on something that works for sure. Let’s hope oppositions don’t start nullifying us.

Or you could say he got the first two months of the season totally wrong through sheer bloody mindedness by refusing to play Madine and we therefore wasted about 10 winnable games. Still better late than never

We didn't get the results early season, that's for sure, and some of the performances didnt deserve anything either.
But I think we can all see now that we were "in planning".

Too many young lads thrown in under pressure game after game without experienced and decent players to play alongside that would allow them to shine and a high press that was knackering them into the ground after 60mins.

It was certainly “in planning” but unnecessary in my opinion. With a Calderwood in from the start I think we would have adjusted earlier. It is what it is.

Let’s hope so. I won’t lie I thought we’d dropped a major clanger with the appointment 2 months in but here’s hoping it was all part of a great master plan.

Or maybe it was just a learning curve for an inexperienced manager. The Calderwood love in is becoming tiresome. Yes, it's helpful that we've got him obviously, but Critch has been coaching these boys for months and we are now reaping the rewards.
I don’t think it’s fair to categorise Calderwood as having little effect. He isn’t a freeloading passenger!

Well done to the Critchley and Calderwood dream team.

I like your post but I kind of disagree a little bit. IMO we seem to have gone to a bit of both. A hybrid if you like. We played some lovely football today.

A factor for me is that we are also getting earlier and more accurate balls into the middle. AJ Pritchard's cross for the winner as an example (nice one Chizballs - even mistaking our footballers for Ballroom dancers).

Someone watching too much Strictly. AJ Pritchard or CJ Hamilton?? 😊

You cannot underestimate the influence Colin Calderwood has had...long may it continue...much much better all round today and it would be harsh to single out anyone for criticism...they are getting better all the time now

I think Critchley and Calderwood also made a great decision to play strong teams in the cups...we have a decent squad and that kept the momentum going...hope we do the same v Fleetwood and Harrogate...the confidence throughout the team has received a huge boost...also not resting Dougall much and getting him in the mix as early as possible has reaped huge rewards

Totally agree, you can’t beat that winning feeling 👍🏼

Yeah, I argued on here that the possession stat was meaningless if we were losing games, but was told I didn't understand modern football?

Great to see our upturn in fortunes. Credit to everyone involved; it's a team effort.

Hard to fault NC's tactics or the way the players carried them out. We dominated the game from the start and I was surprised to see that we had only 42% possession. I wasn't surprised that Posh only had 2 shots on target though.

If I had any criticisms they would be:

1. Corners. We look really fragile at set pieces. Before their goal I was screaming at the TV for someone to pick up their goal scorer. He was just standing there alone waiting for the cross.
2. When a team is coasting as we were at 1-0 bringing three new players into the game in one go can be disruptive, and we did struggle for a while afterwards. It worked out well in the end though.

It took time to gel but boy it is working now, this is probably down to a number of factors. We signed lots of good individuals that have started to develop a cohesion and togetherness, certain latecomers have really added quality where needed (Dougall especially) and the benefits of a strong coaching setup are starting to bear fruit.
As football fans we like to have a moan when things aren't going how we want so it's important that Critchley receives the praises he deserves.

Its more to do with the change of shape and tactics as well as playing people in their correct positions

I actually think Critchley underestimated this league

This group of players should never have lost 6 of their first 8 games

Does it occur to anyone that players dont always do what the manager wants from day one?
At the start of the season Madine wasnt contributing the same, and we didn't have Dougal.

The win was entertaining. We haven't gone from playing easy on the eye, toothless football to long ball tight wins. Somewhere inbetween is about right. Credit has to go to Critch, the coaching staff and the players for adjusting 👏 Long may it continue.

I can't agree with that.

Critch been coaching these players for months and now it's paying off. What, so he said to them back in July we'll play disjointed crap for the first 2 months and then in October we'll go 442 and hey presto!

He may be on an improving learning curve, but to minimize CC impact pre and post signing is wrong.

Me too. I posted a thread that I thought Madine would be a key figure this season and was laughed off the thread being told he was absolutely shite.
Last season & earlier in this one he didn’t look like he was fit or offering much at all. So I’m sure that’s why he received criticism. He now looks totally different & I’m glad to say, happy, confident & scoring goals. He’s certainly won me over, I just hope he stays injury free. 😃

That’s how I see it.

cc got introduced to the players and had 10 mins warm up before the first win, what an impact.

How about “ this is how i want to play as it has worked for me with academy players “ then , shit , players at this level are a bit thick let‘s stick to good old 4-4-2

Full credit to Critchley. It doesn't matter if it's him, him and Calderwood or Calderwood who has had most influence, he's shown he's not some stubborn, one note purist but someone who will reflect and respond and listen to alternative voices or develop a plan B if plan a ain't working.

If Calderwood has had an impact, then it's equally credit to Critchley for taking it on on board.

I was getting really twitchy about the toothless, repetitive stuff we were seeing and now we're seeing football with character and it's way, way more promising than it looked a month ago as a result.

Dougall and Madine with a partner have made us look like a new side.

I've never been a big fan of watching defenders and goalkeepers passing the ball between each other for the sake of it. Definitely not a fan of lower league players doing it.

We aren't playing hoof ball but we are getting the ball forward quicker and with a purpose.

Happy to watch them play backwards and sideways keep ball when we are 2 up, but prior to that get it up the pitch as quickly and accurately as possible.

Yeah, it's all a bit 80s Italian football. Everyone likes a good but of passing football but just knocking it about for no reason is just daft.

one of the major differences is that there are usually 3 players in the box and a couple more at 20 to 25 yards out, beginning of the season we rarely had more than one player in the box. for the winning goal there was a player at teh near post madine and another at the far.

An excellent thread from a class poster on here, and highly relevant to what's going on with the football club. His effective 'plea for patience thread when things weren't going well has been justified too.
