Critch to Sheff Utd?

Quite a surprising that they've potted him after such a short time. Lampard will be first in the queue I suspect.

It's like being in a job where you just got a promotion, a nice bonus, have decent working conditions and are on a new salary. Everyone is tlking about your ability and how you could be the next big thing....

A company then gives you a call and says'...

"We have just sacked our 5th sales person in 5 years and we really want you to join us....Because were a very big club in Sheffield.... 🤔
P.S. You will have no money to spend, the owners will ignore you once you join and the fans will verbally abuse you, if you lose a game....Oh, and we will probably sack you in 18 months anyway"........what time would you like the interview?

Yeah.....I can 100% see Neil being up for it.... 🤔

The trouble with these clubs is they end up in a spiral of negativity which almost can’t be shaken off without reaching some kind of rock bottom. (See Sunderland).

Fans become increasingly impatient, putting pressure on the manager to deliver instant success, that increases pressure on the board & changes the type of candidates that might be considered…. You end up with a dressing room full of disgruntled argumentative players, signed by different managers to play different systems on silly wages etc…

Yes, they are big clubs, but by and large they are set up for failure from too to bottom….

Yep, they tend to have players doing nowt on big wages that you can't shift as they're quite happy to get paid for doing nowt. It's what dragged Sunderland down, but the fans of these clubs need to take some of the blame for demanding big transfers in the first place.

If someone puts a life changing contract in front of him - he would be mad to turn it down.

I hope it never happens - but his first priority should and will be his family’s security - and not BFC.
Simon S knows his business. I expect on top of Critch's dedication to the cause there is a whopping release clause in place.

These 'Critch to' threads are becoming a bit boring, especially when he has not even been connected to a team. I am surprised that Sheff Utd have potted their manager at this stage. They looked a decent ball playing side against us and could have easily been 3 up at half time

Can you really see him leaving after he's just signed a new contract?
If he got a really good offer, he will know that, if Pool carry on the way we are now, he's bound to get even bigger offers at the end of the season.
Bank on Critchs' loyalty..

Next thing that would encourage NC to stay would be a TG announcement and a bulid commencing next year

I suppose it depends on your motivation. There’s a world of difference to wanting to be successful and wanting to earn a lot of cash.

I think the one thing that works very much in our / NC’s favour is the relationship with Klopp. Much like NC, Klopp strikes you as an individual with integrity, who has built his success on a combination of loyalty, integrity and self-belief etc..

It’s a common misconception and a mistake that so many managers make to their ultimate cost to chase the big money at Clubs that just aren’t right…. They are banana skin contracts and they can stop a career in its tracks.

Neil needs to test his capabilities still at Blackpool, develop his own confidence and self-belief at a club that will allow him the time and space to make mistakes etc…

He’ll know when the time is right to take the next step and he won’t be blinded by money…IMO…

The decision to sack Jokanovic seems daft to me. Like if we'd sacked Critch last season. It's just way too soon. They're only about 6 points off the play offs. Yes they should be doing better but this just destabilises things, surely.

Definitely. Better to play the long game and Critch will. Build a legacy then get a big move. Not a team below us with issues.

On top of B side’s and BFC x 3 comments above, there are a few big picture points to consider on this club.

Alan Biggs, the long standing Sheffield sports journalist, is saying that the core of the team which got them promoted is getting old and replacements won’t come cheap. Jokanovic stated he wanted three players next January and the boards reaction was to sack him. So the new manager won’t have much to spend.

Biggs is touting either Paul Heckingbottom or would you believe it Neil Warnock. That tells you the short term thinking involved here.

And finally, the Athletic had an article in the last few days about the financial state of clubs in the Championship. They pointed out that Sheffield Utd are owned by a Saudi. And seemed to suggest that, per their regime there’s only room now for one Saudi owned club to be successful. Of course I have no way of knowing whether that’s true and wouldn’t suggest such a thing,

Klopp and NC are miles apart in contracts.

Very very few footballers or managers stay with the same club when offered considerably more.

The only one I can think of in modern times is Matt Le Tissier and he just wanted an easy life, and I am sure there are others - but not many!!

I will leave you to your wonderful fairytale world of non reality in footbal 👍

I’m not sure I suggested they were on similar contracts, just that they have a relationship and that Klopp hasn’t flip/flopped from Club to Club.

So to that extent he will have a solid mentor to guide him through the minefield I’m talking about.

And there will literally be hundreds of managers who regularly turn down jobs where more money is offered, we just don’t get to hear about them, because they are private conversations.

Neil has alluded to the set up and Blackpool on a number of occasions and he is well supported with a team (board, recruitment set up / strategy in particular) that all pull in the right direction for him… There’s a lot more to our success on the field than NC and his coaching alone (and Neil is well aware of that).

Yes, there may be a contract offer at some point that might simply be too good to refuse, but it won’t come from Sheffield United or a similar basket case type Club…. (They are wrong for him and he’s wrong for them).

So we agree he will move in the end for a good a contract.

Back to reality at least!!!

.. and I never said it would be Sheffield United, but nothing surprises me in football.

I’ll just throw one other thing in to the mix…. Many of the greatest managerial careers in English Football history have been founded on achieving great success with unfashionable clubs😉

It’s almost inevitable (if he continues to be successful).. My point is that he will be well advised / mentored and will not simply jump in with both feet if the circumstances aren’t right.

Listening to SS on Radio Lancs and NC’s comments I feel there are major plans afoot regarding the club’s future and both are very much involved in that process. If so, what an added attractive incentive for NC to help create something special. Am I being over-speculative? Am I the only one who checks every day half expecting a new far-reaching development? As each day goes by I more and more appreciate the sacrifices we endured for 4+ years.

In the same way that we won't hear about private conversations where "hundreds of managers turn down jobs where more money is offered" - I don't believe that's the case myself - I imagine that there will be private conversations "from Sheffield United or a similar basket case type Club" - I am not saying Sheff Utd are a basket case club - where basket case clubs make offers to managers that are too good to refuse.

I fully expect a "Critch to............" thread almost every time a manager is potted elsewhere, and to a degree I quite like it. It shows how fortunate we are to have a reportedly sought after manager.

There are a lot of good posts in this thread (Loyalty v Contract/Cash v bigger club etc), but I think that besides the ongoing building for the future project, a major factor keeping Critch here could be the more realistic expectation from the fans. He simply wouldn't have the time nor patience of the club and its fans elsewhere, especially a club who has just sacked a manager when they're within 2 wins of the play-offs.

Sorry 2020, you might have to run that one by me again. Not grasping what you mean 👍

Absolutely no doubt about what you say.

Also absolutely no doubt that how he is remunerated at another club would be a huge factor in any consideration as seaside suggests.

Dont think sheff utd would go for critch and even if they did i would be confident that he would stay with us. We are on a journey and it hasnt finished yet with him. Thats the feel of it from all concerned.

The coach needs a coach to steer him through the next few years. Phil just signed up to advise Stevie G now he’s back to grown up football down here. Any volunteers?

No problems, I can see why you might have difficulty understanding my stupid long sentence.

More simply put, you suggested to seaside that we don't get to hear about all the cases where managers refuse offers despite the fact they'd be getting more money.

I was just suggesting that we also don't get to hear of cases when basket case clubs make offers to managers that are are too good to refuse and with that in mind, how do you know that Sheffield United won't make such an offer ?

* AVFTT caveats

Please also note that personally I don't believe that there are hundreds of cases where managers knock back moves which would result in significant pay increases.

I am not agreeing that Sheffield United are a basket case club.

I am not suggesting that Critch is about to become the new manager of Sheffield United although it is not impossible.
