Danny Cowley on what happened with Colby Bishop

Doesn’t reflect particularly well on Michael Appleton. Surprise, surprise!

‘With Colby, we went into that window without a number nine and were waiting to create funds through Marcus Harness leaving (Ipswich). That then gave the finance to sign him.
‘Before we arrived, the club had probably made some mistakes in the transfer market with some fees for the previous forwards. John (Marquis) and Ellis (Harrison) hadn’t really worked out.
‘However, it looked like Colby was going to Blackpool. He was sitting in their changing room waiting for a medical, the manager had gone home and there wasn’t anybody really to welcome him.
‘I don’t think he felt valued, yet he knew we were really, really keen. Colby changed his mind and then we got the call from his agent asking whether we’d still be interested. Absolutely!
‘I understood why Colby wanted to go to Blackpool at the time, they were in the Championship and it was a real ambition of his to play at that level.
‘His medical there wasn't straightforward, he’d had some injury issues which slowed Blackpool’s deal. They had sent him for some scans and something showed up, so they wanted him to see a specialist - and we got in-between it.
‘My best friend is a doctor and we always use him in that capacity, he’s a genius and we have a lot of trust in him. There was no big concern from us. When we did Colby’s medical, we were pleased with what we saw - a really robust athlete.
‘I got Simon Bassey to drive to pick him up from London, we didn’t want him kidnapped along the way, so he was chaperoned into Portsmouth! He got in really late at night.
‘We had a friendly against Bognor that evening, so I had one eye on the game and one eye on my phone. I had to leave the dug-out to take a call at one point during the first half!
‘He’s proven to be a fantastic signing for the club.’

Suggests to me he wasn’t an “Appleton” signing. There will always be issues at any club if there is a disconnect between the manager and the recruitment team.

Hopefully the recruitment team get it right this summer and sign some players that can play in a 3-5-2 so we don’t have to watch CJ attempt to be a footballer.

Jump in on someone elses deal and half-arse it at the last minute and it's what happens.

Critchley deserves sacking for the Hamilton extension alone.

Alledgedlly everything went fine, medical okay, untill money was mentioned,Colby wanted £4k a week ,club offered him £3,800.club said there was some medical condition,he signed for pompy that afternoon, went onto score 20+ goals, not bad to say he failed a medical.Better still the club signed Bridcutt, again allegedly on more than £4k a week,he only played around 90 minutes all in,not a bad earner if you can get it.

If Appleton really wanted him then there is no way that he is heading off home leaving the kid to sit alone?

The medical staff did what they’re supposed to, however as we know, if the manager wants the player bad enough they will normally convince the money men to make it happen (within budgets). Hence we signed a few crocks that season whom Apples clearly desperately wanted.

I’m not sure the wages quoted here are accurate. You wouldn’t turn down a player over a couple of hundred quid a week. Based on the article, Appleton didn’t want him and the deal seemingly fell through because of that.

We are talking Blackpool here,Why go for a player, put him through a medical, discuss terms, then the manager turns round and says I don’t want him, because that player doesn’t fit in to the managers plans. Its about time we got a new Jack Chapman,he could find good players,I think I’m not very far away, mind you alledgedlly bridcut was appletons pal, could have been another case of jobs for the boys.

I can only think we extended his contract because of the apparent interest in him. I reckon his agent played a blinder and we fell for it.
I reckon your not far away on that one,now he is our player he can’t go for free, that’s if a club come in for him,so it could be good buisness on Blackpool’s part.Same with Rob Apter, wouldn’t surprise me if he was sold.

How many games has he missed since?

How many goals did he score this season?

Remind me where Pompey finished?
You assume that he would have had the same facilities here? We have had so many injuries, that I'd question what are we doing differently to reduce them as I don't think it's luck or coincidence.

I think that he'd have been injured - not because he's injury prone - but the environment he would be working in.

There are good doctors, of course, but I would prefer to get an orthopaedic opinion, from a consultant qualified in sports medicine if I was investing in a player where there was an area of concern.

I don't think Apter will be sold in fact he'll be a first team pick next season...CJ to be sold to Derby pre season..

It's a joke we'd treat a player like that if we're being honest, no wonder he fucked off where he was wanted.

Who was manager at the time? ** off home on deadline day when we've got incomings is a shambles.
The leader of men and ever charismatic Michael Appleton…

Tbf I wouldn’t have wanted to play for him either !

I know one thing for certain - Holloway wouldn’t have done that. I doubt very much Critchley would either.

Our position with injuries is so weird. For instance why buy a crocked Kyle Joseph last season when we didn't really know if he'd fully recover for a supposed League One record fee last summer and yet be so cautious about a proven goalscorer?!

Apter will be played for 3 games in midfield. Despite being in the wrong position, he will show a bit of passion - get a red. The ‘Head Coach’ will then sulk with him, blank him in training and not play him….
