At last a movement that is advocating non payment of energy bills from October 1st. It’s in its embryonic stage at the moment, but surely whatever ones views political wise, enough is enough. We’re having the piss took now, it’s time for a Poll Tax type revolt, I’m not advocating violence, but we need to take direct action. Thames Water introducing hosepipe bans, when %25 of the water goes down the drain due to leaks whilst the top guy takes £2 million plus in ’handouts’ it’s a ** disgrace!

I was just saying to my wife that I can see riots over this akin to the poll tax riots.

I can see there being a swift lean back towards office based work rather than home working thats for sure. People won’t be able to afford to keep the heating on at home all day mid winter without it costing an absolute fortune.

Other than that I don’t think I’d risk not paying my bill for fear of being cut off and I’m not sure if I’m a natural born rioter 😏

I do think the situation needs addresing and I don‘t think short term bungs from the government to help with bills are the answer.

I don’t know who or what has control over the price capping of energy bills but can that be revisited, as it’s the cause of the biggest cost of living issue we have ?

Lala, I’m not suggesting you get yer Doc Martens on and storm Parliament. 😆 but something better change, it’s not just household bills that this ludicrous hike affects, it’s businesses also.

Deeply worrying times and the disparity in the wealth is increasing at a startling rate. The government and those that hold power will ignore this at their peril. I do not condone this action, firstly because we know nothing about this group and secondly i can see it being those with the most to lose suffering most of all through such actions. There is every reason to believe though that many more now will not be able to make ends meet so risk huge debt to survive despite working hard. It could only then be a matter of time before there is very serious unrest most certainly including riots.

It has a domino affect on everything. Energy impacts the cost of virtually everything I agree.

Unless the price cap is readjusted the right way again it’s a ‘forever issue.’ If that isn’t addressed I don’t see where we can go from here realistically.

The ‘Don’t Pay’ movement is gaining momentum, but more people need to be aware of it. We lay down and and take any old crap thrown at us in our Country, enough is enough, this affects everybody, it’s time for action!

Agree, but what is the ultimate goal or action we want taken ? Again this is where I think the price cap has to be looked at.
Energy price hikes will fuel inflation ( pardon the pun) further and further upwards. So when we riot we need to know what it is we actually want addressing and achieving.

Not necessarily riot, but withholding the payment of bills, we’ve got to start somewhere.

If normally law-abiding people do something as simple (but symbolic), as cancelling their direct debits and changing to pay-as-you-go, it will concentrate minds at energy Companies. They will, in turn, bend the ear of Government.

Be very careful following this organisation. There will be consequences for you if you dont pay your bills and debt collection agencies will be at your door to collect payment in some form. The choice is yours but I would advise looking into who is driving this movement. They wont be there to help you when it all goes tts up.

The energy companies will roll out more pre pay meters, which will mean people will be paying an even higher rate than they currently are now, plus extra on top to claw back the debt on the account.
It's all well and good saying they can't put pre pay meters in to every home, but they have to start somewhere, and whoever is first in the queue will be the ones hit initially.

If that isn't paid, people will be in darkness.

It’s a real mess . I do believe the future for gas electric is in the public sector if we want a fairer outcome. That switches the burden to the treasury and ultimately the taxpayer so some thought on tax changes would no doubt be required. As for water that’s another that should be nationalised for the sake of the environment if nothing else .
Got to feel for those who’s health problems dictate their gas / electric usage and businesses that will go to the wall without considerable help , absolute nightmare.

Does anyone here believe in the great reset and the end goal being that we own nothing ? I’m on the fence - some of it sounds very possible - some of it seems a bit far fetched 🤷🏻 More and more people seem to be talking about it

Fight Club?

You’re not supposed to talk about it!

I heard from one of the guys that Scara follows that BLM are behind this movement. I’d steer well clear if I were you and, as Scara might say, ‘pay your bills and feck those who can’t’

No cap on commercial property and at my hotel the gas and electric have quadrupled per kw hour and the same on standing charge. We ain’t gunna be able to afford £2k a month for gas and electric. Small businesses are really going to suffer through other peoples greed 😡😡😡😡
This is what I’m getting at, it’s small businesses as well as individual households that are going to suffer. My wife’s cousin runs a small pub in Consett he’s struggling now, and reckons once October comes around that’ll be him finished! 😔

All a result of following an extreme form of capitalism that saw the govt sell off all its assets. Water, BT, transport, energy. The list goes on, what was it for? All I can think were temporary tax cuts, the massive boost the country had from North Sea oil wasn't used for anything meaningful except tax cuts. The system isn't functioning anymore, transport and general infrastructure isn't great the NHS is struggling. How do we dig ourselves out of this hole? It's a mess of our own making with an electorate who were easily bribed by tax cuts without any real debate to the end game. Sad really that we've been conned short term. The whole lot needs bringing back under public ownership, tax needs to be set at realistic levels with an honest political debate about the subject. If we had paid a better rate of tax over the last 25 years, kept all essential infrastructure in public hands we'd have been in a better place now and for the future.

In theory i think the idea behind it is a very good one, direct action by the people against rising charges that along with the rest of the cost of living crisis millions of people cannot afford. Deeply concerned though that the real people who will suffer are those who can least afford it when they and their families have their gas/ electric disconnected, appear in court and lose all they have worked for to the bailiffs. The above idea seems a better solution, pay what you can and you can therefore argue to the judge you have fulfilled your responsibility given your income. The rich have to start accepting less otherwise there is a storm coming and they will not be exempt from harmful effects.

People always want something for nothing. That’s why scams are so successful.

Martin Lewis was an early proponent, but has revised his stance to cancel the DD and pay what you can. That way if it does end up in enforcement action a Judge will look much more favourably on the individual as you have not been completely delinquent. Works in the case of rent arrears in social housing.
the interesting thing about that is paying what they can (or more often what they want) is a typical big business move in relation to suppliers. It happens quite often that suppliers get paid up to a maximum amount, and the rest just have to sing for the money until later. Thats been going on for Donkeys Years ive been on the end of it a couple of times.

I guess so, the country had its wool pulled over its eyes though selling off its infrastructure. Ditto brexit, I'll admit the EU has issues but on balance leaving is economic madness. More cost to the country, I see a perfect storm happening here where even the most ardent tories suddenly realise they've had their pants pulled down by the super rich. It was never about the best for this country, the whole thing has been an act of sabotage.

Everyone who has signed an agreement with their Gas/Electric companies have to pay legally. If you don't pay ,they can eventually cut you off . I also would imagine they would also have the right to send the bailiff's round if monies are still owed.

Brexit is really starting to bite now. It will only get worse as the years go by. You can't strangle your own economy and keep the old, high standards of living.

Couple this massive own goal with a bit of uncertainty in the world and you have a Global Britain which is floundering in its own backyard.

If Brexit had been such a good idea they would have been able to make a case for it without having to lie through their back teeth

You have to be given a ccj first. If done it needs to be en masse in order to clog the system.

Have faith in Miz-Trust.

She's going to cut the top rate of tax, and none of her millionaire supporters will have to suffer.

Trust Miz-Trust.

She's also planning to rearrange the deck chairs. Another eminently sensible policy.

You can‘t blame Brexit for this BHOK especially when the rest of Europe are fairing no better.

Most, if not all economist will put the rises down to the war in Ukraine and the rest of our economic mess has been driven mainly by the cost of the pandemic.

Not solely but it is a self-inflicted strangulation of the economy and a big reason why the UK has both the highest inflation rate and the lowest growth forecast for next year out of all the G7 countries.

I can only speak of my personal circumstances here in Ireland, but my annual energy bill is currently running at about 1300€ for a 4 bed bungalow. The situation in the UK does seem to be a lot worse.

1. There does need to be some drastic action by the Government. They seem asleep at the wheel.
2. The current system means that you’re credit rating is at risk is you refuse to pay, which could well hinder the life chances of younger folk aiming to get a mortgage etc.
3. The high prices should mean we all take stock of what we’re actually using. This is actually a good thing for the environment. Let’s be honest, we’ve used gas, electric and water excessively. We can all rationalise our usage without much of any difference to our quality of life. Even if you put on another layer of clothing instead of cranking up the central heating, it will make a big difference.
4. The problem we face is potentially millions being unable to pay. This will dwarf the number willing to revolt and refusing to pay. Once we get millions who can’t pay, the system will be unsustainable and that will lead to a collapse in supply. The spiralling costs for business will only push inflation higher and push is into a deep recession. It’s time for the government to get a grip and start showing us that they are managing this and recognise it’s an impending catastrophe unless they act to avert it.

I am sure some people will prefer never to pay a bill again and keep going to prison where all their electric and gas is paid for by the government on their behalf.
