Draught excluder banned for free kicks

Just heard on commentary that in African football it has been banned due to the chances of a player being stood on.
What is everyone's views?

I am not a fan myself and would say quite often waste of a player that can be marking or in fact a player playing further up for the chance of a counter, very limited goals scored under a wall.

It would be much more effective if the wall held him above their heads !

It’s just not cricket it’s ungentlemanly conduct and should be banned worldwide. Also need to crack down on keepers collecting a shot then going to the ground hugging the ball in attempt to time waste.
Maxwell is a master at this technique.

He's mastered the art of the Maxwell Waddle too; he can run slower than he can walk when required - game management at it's finest!!

If it ever got the point where rolling subs were introduced, like rugby and NFL, Peter Crouch would win more caps for England, just coming on to lie down.

Well done to the African nations that are banning it though are they allowed to do so as so far useless FIFA are allowing it to happen ?

A rolling draught excluder, maybe.

Crouch is too thin. You'd just scour the nation for the person with the biggest 2D surface area. Create a job for someone with type 2 diabetes.

I hope other federations follow suit in banning it, the African federation are right, some could get trampled or fallen on.
I could see kids trying to copy, I coach kids football and could end up in bedlam.

I suppose it does make sense for safety. But I don't like any rule changes. The game is good enough.

It does look stupid, but I'm not sure that banning it is the way to go. More rules are not usually a good idea and my guess is that it will fall out of fashion as ineffective in time anyway.

Just a thought but would sitting players on your shoulders be allowed in walls? I don’t like the draught excluder or my suggestion frankly it’s not cricket.

With thrown ins I would like to see an option either to throw or for a player to take a tap kick to himself. Also regarding free kicks allow players an option to take a tap kick to themselves.

Gilks did one in the last minute at Wembley in the Cardiff 3-2 after collecting a soft header above his head then dived to the ground. The cheer was almost like the cheer when he hoofed the ball downfield a smidgen before the fulltime whistle.

I don't have a problem with the doorstopper thing. Wouldn't do it myself but if a team wants to waste a player by lying down , that's their choice as far as I'm concerned. I'd personally just prefer the wall to be drilled better to time their combined efforts to either stand or jump. And I guess overall I'm saying that because I know if it was me selected for the role it'd take me 10 minutes to get back up again.

But to ban it because someone might get trodden on? Imagine if that thinking starts getting into other sports - the player tackled in rugby is allowed to crawl out before the ruck for the ball develops, or sorry you can't have a short square leg because they may well get hit.

I think it's more because of the aesthetics and the trodden on excuse has been put forward because they can't say its banned because it looks crap.

Yes it does, fully agree. But it should be the team's choice if they want to have someone looking like they're posing for a weird sketch artist.

.........and just wait.........someone being the chosen “draught excluder “ will be smashed in the head with a ball and suffer a career ending head injury and they will turn round and blame the FA for not protecting their welfare.

World gone mad

Let's ban uppercuts in boxing because someone might get hit

Let's ban the hard ball in cricket so it's not as sore when it hits a batsman

Jesus wept, a player can get kicked a number of times during a football match so why not ban football altogether

Let’s go really radical and ban offside up to the 18 yard line. Blackpool 10 Lanerossi Vicenza 0 1972.

On free kicks generally is it not an idea to put up no wall at all? Essentially for anything outside of the penalty area you are asking someone to beat the keeper with a long range effort which few could actually do in open play. If you had no wall then your keeper would not be unsighted and have a better chance of saving from long range.

maybe a wall with a gap between the players to narrow the scope would also be an option. Just a thought….

If you had a 12stone footballer on your shoulders ,not only would it block the keepers view more ,but also you wouldn't to be able to jump would you Pillock🤭.
