Early football memories

Bored tonight, so here's some memories.

As a kid I'm fairly certain the first game I really watched on TV was the '73 final. Jim Montgomery's double save near the end still a highlight even now, one of the great FA Cup moments. Also remember England Poland (just) but wasn't too aware of the significance and the '74 World Cup came and went. Was it Zaire or Haiti where one of their lads ran out of the wall and whacked it down field.

I'll get to the point now. Then England played Scotland at Wembley, won 5-1. I know I watched it all the way through and memory has always had it that we stuffed them, probably based on the score and seeing me old dad bouncing in his chair as Gerry Francis scored again. Apart from the goals I've never seen it since.

Then recently I found some decent highlights online and I was really surprised. Yes England scored 5, at least 3 of them, while good shots or headers, were clearly saveable, and their keeper (was he called Kennedy?)! Jesus, if the legend of the quality of Scottish keepers wasn't alive already, it was certainly born that day. The poor bloke - I've no idea of his career from then on, but if he ever played for Scotland again I'd be amazed.

And Scotland as a team did ok. They seemed to have a lot of the ball, several very good chances. They must have come away from that one flummoxed as to how they'd been so many. Probably why their fans recreated Bannockburn next time they came.

Weird how time and age changes your view. Anyone else have a view on that game?
