Earphone tangles

I’ve got the IPhone ones and every time I put them down, I’m very careful to leave them so I can pick them up without tangle, yet when I come back to them they’re tangled. How does that happen?

The same happens with cables attached to gardening implements. Store them away as neatly as you like and they emerge from the shed in a tangle.

In fact I’m sure I’ve had the cable tie itself into a knot as I’m using it. With one end in the device and the other end plugged into the wall I know that’s just not physically possible but it definitely happens.
