Electric Bikes

I have just been overtaken by a Yoof on an electric Mountain bike!! I have seen them all over recently, & they travel so fast, without helmets (or insurance)

They all seem to wear a hoody (usually black) with the hood up over a baseball cap, with the hood tied tight around their face (so no peripheral vision)

Not seen any Police stopping them, indeed if they can... (legally or physically)

Also these bloody electric scooters nearly as fast riding on the road & pavement.

Got a letter from Little Limes school just before Christmas, from Lancs Constabulary, advising anyone about to buy one for their offspring, that while you can buy them, you cannot legally use one on the road or footpath, & only on private land, but Im yet to see plod stop one

Yours Victor Meldrew!!

It is only a matter of time till a kid gets killed or seriously injured

All over the place - riding round in balaclavas doing wheelies down the road and swinging in and out of all the traffic like
complete 🛎 ends

Listen Victor, I’m with you

Wait till it gets like Barcelona. The scooters are weaving in and out of the traffic and the pedestrians. The UK police need to stop them now before it kicks off.

They already have been killed (on an electric scooter). At least one that was in the news.
Two different things.
The scooters are almost invariably ridden by youngsters and as you say, aren't really safe or legal anywhere except private land...not sure where is a safe place for them tbh - as dangerous for everybody else on pavements and themselves on roads.
E-Bikes ridden by people of all ages - on the whole ridden safely and can legally go where any push bike can i.e. roads, designated cycle paths, "shared spaces" e.g. the Prom etc. They aren't legally required to have either insurance or helmets as I understand it? Perhaps they should but that's a different debate. I noticed in Switzerland recently, E- Bikes were incredibly popular (often for commuter use) - but they all had number plates and helmets were worn - as a requirement, I would guess (a very "rules based" country - don't get caught speeding, for example!). E-Bikes are relatively great for the environment compared to cars, buses etc. and also great for people to get out in the countryside who aren't physically capable of riding a pedal cycle for miles etc. As a keen cyclist, I intend to get one when I can no longer ride under my own power. A brilliant invention. The main advantage being you can use the electric power when you need to.

One dick zoomed past on the inside through the traffic lights doing a wheelie across Highfield Rd & stayed in front of me until I honked him. Then stuck the obligatory 2 fingers up & sped away over 30 MPH going on the wrong side of a traffic island. I wanted to stick my foot down & ram the little bastard, but that would have made me as bad as him. Perhaps the police or PCSO's can randomly stop these & if they're found to be illegal, confiscate them without recompense, do nothing & it will just get worse. I'm afraid the standard of discipline & respect is at it's lowest level ever.

If I’m correct e bikes are limited to 15mph. Obviously you can pedal harder and go beyond that but they assist up to 15mph.
I’ve just bought one because it was a bargain but not really used it yet but will one day soon. My wife has one and I struggle to keep up with on my ordinary bike going uphill- she’s like Mary Poppins!

The law says 250w and no assistance above 15.5 mph, otherwise it needs to be registered and taxed, but you don't need to look too hard to find someone willing to sell you something far more powerful for "off-road use".

Ultimately, if the police aren't going to enforce the law, a lot of people will simply ignore it.

Keep a broom handle in your car then when the little scroats weave past stick it through the front wheel. It’d be entertaining to see them & their stashes of drugs splattered on the road. Wishful thinking on my behalf 🙄

Pepper spray might be more discreet

I read recently that these electric scooters are illegal on the road and on the footpath.
As has been said, no one does anything about them.
Must see, on average, about 6/7 a week whizzing past the house.
They are only legal on Private Land.

The ones I see are upgraded mountain bikes, with new electric hubs & a battery slung in the frame, these are NOT limited & I understand from speaking with a yoof, will do 35-40mph.... & pold does nothing!!

They're promoted in cities in China to reduce the number of people using cars and motorbikes with great effect, but they have a separate lane for them.
Helps with traffic jams, pollution, cost almost nothing to run, and they have a type of hybrid e-bike / mobility scooter which are a lot safer (both for them and others) for older drivers to use.

E-bikes are also being introduced on 'tourist' islands like Borocay and Phuket as the only allowed form of transport...again for noise and pollution reasons.

So I'm a big fan of the concept, especially with the rising price of fuel....however we'd need a half intelligent council/government to make the transition. 😐

Photo of mine below. Cost £600, range of 80km, top speed of around 60mph, I plugged it in to charge once every 3 days at free charge points at work or our apartment block.

They seem jolly good fun. I’m thinking of getting one to ride home from the Pub on cos it takes me ages walking when I’m leathered 👍

Is this from Viz top tips?

They banned electric bikes without power assistance from being sold, why cant they do the same with electric scooters?
