Ellis Simms

Have we still got faith in him to deliver? He is clearly a goal poacher but I wonder if his all round play now fits in to what Neil Critchley is looking for? Handy sub I suppose for 10 mins if we need to give Yates a break but am not sure we'll go back to Simms/Yates up top?

He's in a learning process, as Yates was at the start of the season, and he has attributes Yates doesn't have, like height and pace. Things could fall into place for him and he might get some crucial goals for us. Finding the right combination of players can be tricky and sometimes it happens by chance and we may need him more than you think, with Madine out and lots of games and not many options in the true striker sense.

Do you not think Yates looks like he has pace? I thought he always looks pretty quick when playing, especially when he quickly closes down opposing keepers and defenders.

I wouldn't describe him as pacy no. His game isn't built around pace at all. He's very good at other crucial stuff though, he works incredibly hard and is a handful to defend against, and has great feet and an eye for goal of course. You don't see him outpacing defenders though.

I think he's at the right club at the right time for his current development. He adds a different dimension into the mix compared to the players we already have which is what you need when playing against different teams with different strengths and weaknesses.

He's done well enough for a young lad with limited first team experience. He's tried to adapt to a role that he's not really played in before and will have learned plenty. I'm more than happy to have him in the squad as he has a goal in him and the ability to stretch a back 4.

Personally I think that Ellis looks like an animal but acts like a pussy. He has ability, but doesn't use his attributes. I've watched him carefully in games and seen him continually jumping into the defender when a high ball come towards him, instead of attacking the ball and using his considerable strength . If he can sort this out I think he can be a huge force to contend with.
Good luck Ellis !!!!!

Would like to sign Simms, at this point he is still raw but offers more than Madine in the near future, He can hold the ball up, is taller so should be better defensively and above all he has pace so balls over the top are just as effective as balls to feet

Think he’ll be a very good striker, but doesn’t have Yates workrate, I think Simms and Madine could be a very good partnership against teams that will sit

This is because he's a kid finding his way in the senior game. During the Cods game, he was dominated by their CB's, whereas Vassell was a nuisance for Ballard and Husband. Simms hasn't really had to learn that side of the game as he'll be used to physically dominating his peers and the other kids in 'reserve' team football.

All part of the learning curve for him.

I think his signing was meant to be supplementary to Madine/Yates, giving us a different option whilst the main goal being getting some development in the senior game.

Madine getting injured forced him into the Starting XI earlier than you'd probably want, he has been a bit hit and miss but he was amazing against Charlton. Definitely a decent footballer that just needs time to get used to the mens game.

Agree with that. I like him but I see him as an attacking centre-mid, holding up and laying off between the centre circle and the penalty area, as well as threatening up front from set-pieces. I suspect he'll be involved in the Sunderland games.

One of Yates main assets is that he is very quick thinking.
Add that to his excellent, on target, strike rate and he is a very outstanding scorer, at this level.

Simms will become a very good player. He could be playing at Premier League level with the right coaching and attitude.
He's certainly got a few good strikers and former striker to learn off at Everton.
I wonder if Ancelotti knows him? :)

I thought you were referring to Joe Nuttall!

He's a different option to have. Chasing a goal you need something different on the bench, more heigh, willing to have a pop. He's had a good start with us.

This.

Also, I feel like playing him as the target man up top in a string of successive starts wasn't the way to go about utilising him - a young lad finding his feet in the senior game in that role; there's always going to be inconsistency.

Sorry just not working for him, if we have a choice I wouldn’t start with him again this season. As a late sub he could do a job, he just needs to find a way to get involved more when he is given a chance. Don’t forget we also have some young strikers of our own who would benefit from being given a chance and could make a late impact in the game.

I don't agree with that at all tbh. If Yates gets injured, and he might not make this afternoon's game, Ellis will be the replacement. And it's too early to write him off in this manner. Yates didn't score for ages, ran around a lot but barely had a shot at goal for weeks. It takes a while usually for a player to adjust and find their place in a system, especially a system that is changing. like ours is. He might yet score the goals that take us up.

I think in the way we play now (how many times have we said that this year!) Simms will get more joy than as a target man he absolutely wasn't.

I'd expected him to replace Yates on Tuesday actually - I think he'd be decent in the last 15/20 minutes, playing on the turn and moving across the defence.

I don't think we'd select him to start unless we've no choice because Jerry's movement, both offensively and defensively has been superb (and it was an aspect of his game I criticised) and it's not fair to imagine Simms can simply replicate what Yates has learned in his career.

I don't think Simms is the problem, asking him to be target man is, and I'm happy to see him play where he needs to as long as it's not that role.

I'm not sure how, when or if he will take off as a striker during his time with us, but he has attributes that Yates doesn't have. He is quicker than Yates and, and he scored with is head in his first game. Nt that he looks lethal in the air but he gives us some height in the box. He's got goals in him I reckon.

I agree, I think he looks best on the turn on through balls and when we started him, that wasn't how we served him at all. I think ideally (for him, not us at it would mean no Yates), he'd play with Madine

I think so too, Madine got injured in that Wigan game, unfortunately. When he gets his first goal we need to whack an Earth Wind & Fire song on the tannoy, and then a different song each time he scores. Get a whole 70s groove vibe going for him to buzz off. A massive pretend spliff goal celebration maybe. Get him a crown and a gold cloak. It's these things that make a difference.

Imagine him grabbing a late winner in the play off semi and the whole ground reverberating to 'Let's Groove Tonight' while Yatesy places the crown on his head, Sullay wraps the cloak around him and Gary Goals hands him a big spliff. Could there be a better send off to Wembley?
