European Super League Announcement

Isn't it instead of the Champions League though, and not an actual break-away domestic league?

EDIT:
Yes, it is. I read that they're doing it as a protest to some reformations UEFA are doing to the Champions League which these clubs don't agree with.

So it isn't the ridiculous European Super League which would see the big clubs leave their domestic leagues to solely compete in a Super League. Click-baity stuff from Sky.

From what I've read it's the 'big boys' creating their own European league to rival the Champions League but they run it so are always in it, from all accounts the teams competing will receive a minimum of £300m per season, guaranteed every season as they decide who plays in it. It's like an elite club so the rich can get even richer.

Seems that some aren't reading what they plan on doing..... as has been pointed out this is in protest at the Champions League, not domestic football.

It's being proposed to rival only the Champions League.

Great news because it will loosen the grip on the rest of English football, and I just hope all the subscribers keep the gravy train rolling.

In the meantime the Football Supporters Association and the Trusts have spectacularly failed to put a fight, preferring to spend thousands on trips abroad that have got the fans collective absolutely nowhere.
A 'call to arms' on a boycott of all ESL sponsors and services is required which funnily enough was brought up- and shunned-by BRR at the AGM in 2010.

Right, so are they leaving the EFL or not? That statement implys they are but that’s not my understanding of it.

GOOD! They can fuck off never to return and take another couple with them. Any player who plays in that or any other breakaway league should forfeit the right to play for their country.

If it brings the game back to the people then happy days. All the armchair supporters can fuck off with them and the mega wealthy can fill the stadiums in corporate heaven and they can pipe chanting into the ground for a fake atmosphere.

Should make for a much more even playing field for 'proper' football.

Bit rich coming from them who did the very same thing in 1992.
True but they only really let the genie out of the bottle, which had been coming because of the exodus previously to Italy.

Agents at the heart of all this although I do appreciate that many of the 70s and 80s superstars never received the appropriate amount for their talents.

The question is whether there is a governing body or not. If there is anyone participating in an unauthorised super league there will surely be bans for the authorised competitions to follow...Like the cricket breakaway farce of yesteryear, it may affect the domestic game in any event.

Who are the big 6 these days?

Liverpool, Man U, Man City, Chelsea

It’s all kicking off .... FFS

Led by Football Supporters Europe (FSE), of which the FSA is a member, fan groups across the continent today united to condemn plans by a selection of Europe’s biggest clubs to form a breakaway European Super League.

Below is the full statement outlining supporter opposition – include FSA members – and list of all signatory fan groups. If your supporter organisation would like to add their name to the statement – please get in touch.

This statement is signed by a wide cross section of European fans, including national fans’ organisations, fans of the top 200 ranked UEFA clubs, fans of clubs that reportedly back a breakaway league, and fans of previous winners of European competitions.

We are all united in our opposition to the creation of a European Super League—an unpopular, illegitimate, and dangerous scheme in the eyes of the overwhelming majority of fans.

It would destroy the European model of sport, which is based on commonly accepted principles such as sporting merit, promotion and relegation, qualification to European competitions via domestic success, and financial solidarity. In the process, it would also undermine the economic foundations of European football, concentrating even more wealth and power in the hands of a dozen or so elite clubs.

We recognise that the game is in desperate need of broad reform. But proposals to this end must seek to revive the competitive balance in European competitions, protect domestic leagues, promote the interests of fans, and encourage fairer revenue distribution. A European Super League would achieve none of these objectives—quite the opposite.

Sporting Merit & European Competitions

The reasoning behind a closed breakaway league is simple: it allows big clubs to succeed off the pitch even when they fail on it. It is anti-competitive by design. It does away with the magic of the cup, snatches the dream of seeing your club play in Europe, and goes against the very spirit of the game.

This approach is profoundly unjust and counterproductive. We believe all clubs must have an equal opportunity to qualify for European competitions based on hard work, determination, and skill, not the size of their balance sheet or past glories.

Protect Domestic Competitions

A Super League would further undercut domestic competitions, exacerbating existing inequalities within and between leagues—in part by adding more European games to an already congested calendar and giving the wealthiest clubs an even bigger advantage through increased revenue.

We care first and foremost about how our clubs fare in domestic leagues and cups. We refuse to let them become second class competitions. We want to strengthen, not weaken them.

Defend Fans & Fan Culture

The pandemic has shown yet again how crucial fans are to the spectacle and survival of football, from the Champions League to the amateur game. We have supported clubs—financially and otherwise—despite not being able to attend games and suffering the effects of an economic crisis in our everyday lives.

This solidarity should be recognised, not exploited. There are limits to the amount of time and money fans can invest in football, and a Super League pushes well beyond them.

We do not want or need more European games. And we are tired of paying for the fantasy of ever-increasing wages, transfer fees, and profits, as well as the financial mismanagement of some.

Fairer Revenue Distribution & Sustainability

The current economic model of European football is deeply flawed. A handful of clubs are awash in money, while a significant number have too little, and in many countries the grassroots game teeters on the brink of collapse. A Super League would make this situation much worse by allowing big clubs to monopolise profits and endangering the existing solidarity and redistribution system.

We want a more equitable distribution of European football revenue to protect all leagues and clubs, making them more competitive at the domestic and European levels.

Dialogue with Fans & Other Stakeholders

A Super League would make European football more unequal, less competitive, and, ultimately, unsustainable. While reform is needed, it should not come in the shape of an ultimatum from wealthy clubs seeking to benefit from an unprecedented public health crisis.

We therefore call for meaningful multi-stakeholder consultation on any proposals to restructure the European game, including fans and their representatives.

We will also closely monitor all attempts to change the existing format of European club competitions, measuring them against the principles outlined above, and will further oppose any attempts to impose a Super League by the backdoor.

If I was a fan of any of those clubs, i'd honestly be embarrassed. If European competition isn't via qualification, then what's the point. They then also get a guaranteed £300m every season apparently - how can that create a fair domestic competition? The PL and FA need to stand up to this and go through with their threat of expulsion from the PL if it goes ahead. Sadly I suspect it's an empty threat.
I'd also add that it's a bit rich of Uefa to criticise it when their Champions league reforms includes two wildcard entries based on history. Not as blatant as this proposal, but it's still the first stepping stone towards a closed shop European competition.

Deeply worrying development if true.
That depends on how many "fans" are prepared to desert the domestic leagues and how many will stay true. Surely if Sky are behind it it will cost them millions and if the fans are not viewing, won't that have an effect on its future?

Very frightening. Many so called supporters are not like ourselves who support and adore our local clubs. They prefer to wear their city, united , chelsea shirts whilst watching them on sky/BT. There is no reason to believe that this will change. Sadly cannot see many of these viewers wanting to tune in for Burnley v Southampton, WBA V Sheffield united. Money that should filter down to the lower leagues and grassroots football will dry up . This could well lead to many more clubs going to the wall, genuine fans walking away from football and a dearth of young football talent. Sadly whatever the quality of the product comes there will be vast wagers made and there will always be dickheads willing to pay huge tv fees to watch a so called superior product. The game then will really have sold its soul.

As I said, let them get on with it and let's go back to the old European cup format of the top teams in each top division playing in a knockout competition and a European cup winners cup so the glory of the FA cup comes back. There are so many positive possibilities if the greedy few who think they are far superior fuck off into the nebula.
Those were the days.

If you don't have to earn your place, then what's the point? Football, and all sporting competitions, are all about earning your successes.
Arsenal for example don't deserve to be playing the top European teams, as they aren't one themselves. I mean, why don't we just re-arrange all domestic leagues according to club size? Sure, we'd always be a league or two higher than PNE, but personally i'd rather we earned it.

GOOD! They can fuck off never to return and take another couple with them. Any player who plays in that or any other breakaway league should forfeit the right to play for their country.
I would go one step further. Any player in the so called 'big six squads' should NEVER be allowed to join any teams in the English Leagues once their time in the European League comes to an end.

Who are the big 6 these days?

Liverpool, Man U, Man City, Chelsea

Surely Arsenal and Tottenham aren’t included they’re shiiiite
And seriously why should City be included? They're only 'big' because of the Arab oil money and cheating the FFP rules. Take that away and are they any bigger than Everton? Newcastle? Villa? No they're not. Exactly the same with Chelsea.

The Premier League can bleat now all it likes about competition and clubs being able to dream but they have happily spent 30 years unevenly distributing central monies that completely obliterated meaningful competition within domestic football and smashed any realistic dreams for all but a tiny handful of clubs.

They fully contributed to what is now a further dagger in the heart of true competition in football. I have never felt more schadenfreude than I do right now for the Greed League as it now faces life as a pauper.

Clubs in Germany and France have refused to get involved with it so credit to them .
I'm surprised that PSG has refused to be involved, unless they see this as an opportunity to dominate the champions league with Bayern munich
