European Super League Announcement

There is a very simple way for the Govt to stop this. All the Govt has to do is pass a law forbidding local Police Forces from policing such ESL matches. Without that safeguard, the local authorities could not permit such matches to proceed.
I like the idea; will that just make them play overseas which they won't see as an issue?

Somehow, it has to be, if you play in the ESL, you are expelled and expunged.

I feel for the fans of the clubs and it would be a shock to the system, it would reduce the money circulating in old football (which is no bad thing) and potentially see the best 150 footballers in England move; but I think that's the only way to deal with it.

Read this Telegraph article quoting Florentine Perez. (Switch off JavaScript to bypass the paywall). He’s the real problem. This guy has spent 20+ years promoting the Galacticos idea at Madrid and now wonders why RM are hundreds of millions in debt. He even has the cheek to propose 60 minute matches, presumably 4 x 15 minute quarters to allow for more advertising, NFL style. This guy, along with the Yank franchise owners, is the real cancer in football that needs cutting out. Reform of UEFA/FIFA will follow. And restrictions on internet gambling.

Agree completely. If you want to "save football" (aka save his own club), then you might want to try stop paying astronomical wages and transfer fees. I wonder if that's ever crossed his mind. The problem with this ESL plan is that it still doesn't address the root cause of all this debt, it just masks over it. In another 20 years, these clubs will need to come up with another idea to cover their ever spiralling debt. Rest assured, they will still be in massive debt in 20 yrs.
We don't need a closed shop money spinning league, we just need a wage cap.

The Competition and Markets Authority has confirmed they are looking at this. The Chair of the Media and Sports Committee has said that one option could be to limit work visas for such a proposal
And place Tax reforms to ensure they are taxed and the money distrubuted to grass roots.

Players revolt, fans to boycott when allowed back (opposite to what happened to us) pitch invasions civil disobedience all tools. Whatever happens there won’t be 100% support either way. We could have player mushrooms as well as supporter ones (they’ll be growing on their armchairs though & out of sight) I wonder if this whole thing is a Sprat to catch a Mackrell 🤨

I think it would need a total player boycott to sink it as either a separate competition or bargaining chip.

If you look at some of the other super league styles around the world, the Gulf states’s leagues, MLS, Chinese Super League etc, they still operate and draw in their revenue goals with 75% bang average players and a sprinkling of stardust.

even if a handful of top talent went for the 12 clubs, there’d be no end of middling players available who’d fill the ranks.

A lot of this depends on the players. If they move they have to all move against it.

I doubt it would come to something as drastic as that. But if it takes drastic action to stop this appalling idea, then bring it on.
I can see them making a joint statement condemning it and then doing sweet FA. And you don't need all PL captains, you just need those of the 6 renegades to do something

I can't do links but I would recommend reading the superb article by Simon Hettenstone in today's Guardian regarding the lack of actions by fans in the past and the fact that the owners of 6 don't really care about or need the local fans

Which they have in the NFL but that hasnt stopped the gravy train from continuing.
I was wondereing what Piers Morgan thought about his Arsenal? He has an opinion about everything else
He's threatened to rip us his £1,000* season ticket in disgust, completely failing to see that he's as far away from being a traditional supporter as you can be; thus he's part of the problem in the first place.

Breaking on the Chelski-Brighton match page...
"BBC Sport understands that Chelsea are preparing documentation to request withdrawing from the European Super League."

They've done this to strengthen their hand in negotiations with Uefa/Fifa and all they've done is weaken it.

I could not support these teams anymore knowing how little they actually care for the fabric of the sport.
These clubs are only an investment nothing else.

Remember this letter from FSG 5 years ago?

'The three of us have been particularly troubled by the perception that we don’t care about our supporters, that we are greedy, and that we are attempting to extract personal profits at the club’s expense. Quite the opposite is true.'

LOL

But according to the president of Real Madrid the ESL is the only chance we have to save football !!!???!!!!!
What will we do without it, unless he's wrong of course.

I hope the Premier League, FA, FIFA, Uefa and the other nations football associations show some real balls here and still punish the clubs involved.

The have to make an example of them so they don't dare attempt anything like this again. A couple of years ban from European competition would be my punishment, but that may not be harsh enough.

Anyone think all these punters proclaiming the dawning of a new era and the power of the common fan are doing a serious bit of arse-talkery?

Few of them gave a shite when we took on the forces of poison and few of them did anything to help relieve the plight of the likes of Bury, Dulwich Hamlet etc etc.

After all the hullaballoo dies down, it's still the Greed League at heart. This isn't over, it's just gone parochial.
