Favourite Island

Really sorry to do this, but New Zealand itself isn't an island as such. It is an "island nation" but there is no actual island called New Zealand. There is North Island and South Island (very original...) together with about 600 other smaller islands... :D
I know, I lived there for 10 years in the 90's/2000's before moving to Oz and still a proud Kiwi citizen!

I've been to quite a few islands and it's hard to pick a winner but the one that surprised me was Gran Canaria, I'd just cycled round Lanzarote (including a stunning ride round the small island of La Graciosa in amazing weather and light), then Fuerteventura, and on to Gran Canaria, which was like a tropical paradise after the bareness of the others. The whole trip was fantastic, Gran Canaria was beautiful, we climbed the 6000 feet up from the coast to the top one day and then saw the sun set over Tenerife and it was pretty awesome. Cuba, Outer Hebrides, western Crete, Mallorca, Capri all worthy of mentions. Oh, and Inisbofin, off the west coast of Ireland.

That sandbank Island off Fleetwood opposite the sea cadets base... didn't someone plant a flagpole and flag there and claim the island? They got there before me..I would have built a hotel on legs there.

I read somewhere that due to the lack of dredging that sandbank is effectively now a land mass. There was a rumour that AP wanted to build something on it a couple of years ago. Probably bollocks tho.

I’m a regular in Lanzarote but never been to Gran Canaria. I watched a programme the other night where someone was on a motor bike ride round Gran Canaria and it did indeed look stunning.

That bank isn't actually sand at all it’s pebbles and coarse gravel some of the stones are quite large, went ashore on it last year just for a nosey seems weird when your on it.

As for my favourite island it has to be Kefalonia it’s just beautiful.
