Favourite striker: Bamber, Ellis or Ormerod?

As the question clearly states "who is your favourite striker" then for me it is Bamber then Ellis then Brett.

Probably more to do with my age at the time they played for us but unlike the other two, Brett was never my favourite player - that doesn't mean I didn't like him because I certainly did, it's just that there was always other players who were my favourites when he was playing for us.

Ellis. You just knew when he picked the ball up wide left corner of the box where the ball was going. I'd celebrate in anticipation.

Guess you'd feel the same about Ormerod, with his Preston connection....
It just felt different with Ormerod - probably because he was signed by Pool first then went to PNE a few years later, rather than coming from straight from our Arch Rivals like Ellis did. Like I said in my original post, I was a few years younger when Ellis played for us and at that age got caught up in all tribal stuff and hadn’t yet developed the maturity to understand that in the main, footballers don’t have the same sense of club loyalty that fans do and it’s just a job. Hence why I never really took to Ellis ( Although he was a great striker and thought it was still ace when he signed😃)

Ormerod for me. Scored in all 4 divisions for the 'Pool and his right foot put us in the Premier League. When I think of his goal against Spurs in the Prem the memory of the roar gives me chills every time, you could tell everyone was praying he'd get a goal that season

I just googled to see if there was any other player who'd done it for one club and there is not even a mention of Brett in two separate articles discussing "players who have scored in all 4 divisions". Surely it is more remarkable to do it for one club than 4/3 separate ones? Madness!

Bamber

LIke another poster said just seemed to score every time he had a chance

Ellis

He was cool

And

He broke the nobbers little hearts when he joined us

Brett

He put the Pool in the Premier League

Has to be Brett

Bamber, definitely a marmite player, loved at Blackpool, voted the worst player ever for Stoke and Hull.

Brett was different league to Bamber and Ellis (both good, but neither top level strikers). Brett was good with both feet too!

All had different qualities. Ellis was a natural finisher in the box, but was bit less prolific than the other two. Bamber looked awkward at times but scored the most goals. Brett never stopped running and often made something out of nothing. It is Brett for me, firstly because he played and scored in every division for us, including the PL and secondly, because his striking partnership with John Murphy was the best I had seen since Hatton and Walsh

Hatton & Walsh were tremendous, backed up by Finnigan & Spence around that time.

Ellis for me because he was my first BFC Hero (yes some of us are a bit younger than others 😀)

Very difficult to judge !
But I loved the swagger of Tony Ellis (but he only had one foot ) but have to agree with some on here when he came down the left then cut inside the hair on my neck stood up in anticipation of that right foot scoring ,
Then there was big Dave as said great target man scored some great goals !
Brett loved his effort and his never say die attitude (loved him when simmo was in the side ,but could not forgive him for going to nob end (but be did redeem himself when he came back )!
So have to say of the three chosen it would have to be Tony Ellis (because he hurt the nobbers so much when he signed)👍.

Ellis was the most technical of the 3 and would score some great goals.
Bamber was a serious goal poacher and strong.
Brett edges it for me; grit, tenacious, and would up his game when playing against better players.

I remember when Brett first came to us very raw, but I was always disappointed if he was not on the team sheet, it was worth the admission fee just to watch him. He soon became a regular though. Had my doubts when he came back to us but again he didn't let us down, so for me it's Brett.

That was the question a mate (Man United) asked me earlier today.

I know, what kind of question is that? It'd be easier choosing my favourite child.

This is what I replied...

Bamber - Looked ancient and ungainly but it felt like he scored almost every chance he ever got. Loved him.

Ellis - The King. Oozed class. And never did interviews which made him seem other worldly. Loved him.

Brett - Scruffy on and off the pitch. Worked his bollocks off. Willing to get hurt in the process. Goal machine for a couple of seasons. Loved him.

If I had to choose a favourite it would be Brett. On the basis of him scoring in every division for us.

But if I could choose to play like one of those players? The King!

Who was your favourite?
There was only one King. He played for us for 10 years in the top two divisions.

Ormerod just because of the impact he had on this club and actually the way he still loves it - you can tell when he's on commentary duties on Radio Lancs how much he still loves it.

Ellis for me and one of the reasons was the Nobbers went in meltdown when he signed. A friend of mine worked at Aerospace at the time and he said it was brilliant winding up the PNE clowns. Ormerod also remembered with great fondness and a great servant to the club.

Nice question, but of course there's no right answer.

Bamber just made such a massive difference to us as a team. Even when half-fit we'd go from a side who looked certainties for relegation to a side who could compete with the top half teams. All at a lower level of course.

Ellis - just a very classy player at League 1 level. Only he could have made the switch from Nob End because only he could give off the impression of having no emotional attachment to any club he played for. But i've also never seen a player so consistently receive the ball on the left hand side of the penalty area, turn his marker and bend one into the top right corner. In reality he probably only did it a few times, but it felt like half his goals were scored that way.

Brett - left us an electric, confident but still raw goal scorer. Similar in some ways to Vardy leaving Fleetwood. Returned as an intelligent and incredibly hardworking forward who - like GTF - was perfect for Ollie's plans, because he had the brain to make the most of the system. Great movement off the ball and maintained his eye for goal - as demonstrated by the crucial equaliser vs Brizzle and THAT goal at Wembley.

Loved watching all 3 play, but it has to be Brett for me.

Thanks for your answers. Tough one wasn't it!

Although it seems that Brett is the overall favourite within the thread, the support and appreciation for Ellis and Bamber is huge too.

I think we would all agree that these three players were hugely influential for our club and gave us many happy memories.

It was great to hear all your stories.

Thanks very much!
