Female police officers?

I don't think this is actually a male/ female thing although the clip has brought it to the fore. It is though more of a suitability thing and highlights a problem with the deployment for certain roles and dare I say it DEI. It would be just as unsuitable for a tiny physically weak guy as it would be for a tiny physically weak woman which is where maybe doing away with height and relaxing physical requirements was a mistake for some but not all roles in police. This isn't meant to be controversial but just seems logical to me to deal with certain types of threat.
That punch was a cracker though and would have sent some guys down too. Fair play to her getting back up and carrying on. If she was my daughter I'd be proud of her.

WPCs back in the day had a calming affect on pi**ed up blokes scrapping or a domestic argument but those days are gone, scrotes see the uniform not the person, way too dangerous for a female to be a first responder,
Not a chance I’d let my daughter be a copper

I'm 5'6", in the majority of situations, I'm not going to get the better of a guy 6' plus.
Respect to any cop, as I wouldn't want the job. I do believe a bloody big copper is more effective.

100 per cent agree .

You would think that any police officer, male or female, who is likely to be on the front line, would be trained to a high level, in self defence and martial arts. If not, they shouldn’t be there.

This is a conversation I've had with my mum for years. Im a woman who is 6ft tall and did various martial arts from 4 to my late 20s. If I kicked off, most of the female police officers I see walking around wouldn't be able to handle me never mind 2 big blokes fighting. Loads of times I see 2 female police officers walking together that are about 5ft 5 and look like they weight about 9 stone and you just know that if something kicks off they've got little to no chance of actually stopping it without back up.

Im all for equality, but there also has to be common sense. There's a reason that people aren't scared of the police anymore and part of it is who they're hiring. Not just the women, but some of the men look like they couldn't fight thier way out of a wet paper bag, but they've got a degree so that means they must be able to do the job. Sorry for the rant, but like I said its something that my mum and I have been talking about for years.

That’s exactly what I said when I got told off for making it a male female thing.
Some females will be stronger and braver than some males. So the debate should be, should we have more stringent physical and mental testing for front line police officers.
It should be based on the individual, and their capabilities, not their gender.

Im gonna sound really old here, but we need to go back to the old days of physical testing. The current one has been reduced to the point where most people can pass it. They care more about someone having a degree now, than what theyre physically capable of.

They are released after serving two thirds or even a half if they have been relatively well behaved . Google it
This is the trouble with your mindset you simply can't comprehend that prison is not the omly available punishment which makes me despair. A determinate sentence has been 50-50 since forever and if you think being on licence is all gas and gaiters you're badly deluded, it isn't. I won't go into every type of sentence but every day of the punishment is served.

As someone who has plenty of experience with the system through work, they absolutely don't.
You absolutely do, prison is not the only punishment and some on licence deliberately reoffend to escapoe probation get in the real world.

Agree.

I had some good times but I was the most unlikely copper there was. I did it purely for the wage at the time and getting a free Police house. I was actually really good at my job and specialised in some really serious areas of crime after my first 10 years on the beat. In the end I was diagnosed with PTSD and if I hadn't left a couple of years early I probably would not be here now. It phucked me mentally and it has taken years to deal with it and I still have nightmares 3 or 4 times a week. I always gave everything and invested too much. of my soul and it took it and destroyed it at the time. I resent it now and wish I had done something else, stayed in the music business, but I probably wouldn't be here now if I'd carried on that life too, but for different reasons!!

I love being self employed and doing something I love now.
Horrible stuff hertford sorry you're going through that, adding following Blackpool FC as well can't have helped either.

Just to put a spin on the debate.
Many, many years ago, I was partnered up with a female officer as a tutor constable for the first month or so of my probation.

She was peace and feminine charm personified..... most of the time, but when a group of violent football fans refused to refrain from fighting each other, she sparked out 2 of the main protagonists when they thought it would be a good idea to give us a bit of grief.

Different times, different values, but it should be noted that all we had to defend ourselves was a truncheon and whistle....!

Many years ago when I was a Bobby in Watford the shifts were much larger and if there was more than 2 WPC's on a shift of 20 it would be an oddity. There was also a height requirement and most of the officers were nothing like the wet weekends they employ now, it was violent and horrible out there and you needed the big horror shows that were on your side.. Add to that the numbers on shifts have dwindled massively and the majority are WPC's and population has grown massively and has become far more violent I have no idea why anyone would want to join as a police officer, it's one of the worst jobs there is. It used to be a job for life, 30 years, more than enough to do a really difficult job but now the conditions have changed so much that most officer's come and do 5 years for their CV and then move on to something else.

It's all part of today's culture and it's not just the Police either. I wish I had never done it and there is no way I would do it now.
Summed up brilliantly for me that Herts.
I did almost 26 years, and accumulated sights and experiences that I wouldn't wish for anybody to have.

One morning, I woke up, told my wife I just couldn't 'do that sh-i-te' anymore.
By the afternoon of that day, I was in a psychiatric institution where I spent over 3 weeks trying to rewire my overloaded mind.

So many like us and there are those that are job pissed and can never leave, they carry on as civilian investigators and once they retire they don't last long. Getting out was the best thing I ever did for my health and sanity but it has left a terrible scar.

😂 Funnily enough it was really great therapy at the time, the worst years for me were 2002 to 2013 when I took early retirement, so that included some decent times in our recent history and some bad ones, which strangely, fighting the stains was hugely cathartic. After I left I spent a year giving my time to a music charity in Cambridge patronised by the Sydney Barret Foundation, it was an amazing place for people who were recovering from addiction, homeless etc., they had a great place, studios, loads of instruments, did courses on playing the guitar, keyboards, drums, they had a musical theatre group and had some really talented musicians and some who just wanted to learn, it was one of those places that was full of fun and never any aggression or bad behaviour. I helped teach guitar there 3 days a week and did some PR work for them, it was great for me too. Sadly, one of the board swindled the place out of most of the funds and Cambridge Council (The worst Council I have ever come across) stopped funding so it closed down.

The punishment is usually never enough and if you think that reporting to a probation officer once a week , or community service is a punishment you are the type of person that has made this country into what it is today .

If I had my way we would have the death penalty , the removal of limbs and for lesser crimes the cat of nine tails.

Hahahaha they really are not, it's cursory so they cover their backs in case someone hurts someone or they get injured. The training is woeful.

That sounds like Sharia Law to me you should convert to Islam.

For me they should make the punishment severe enough that it will put them and others off committing crime in the first place. The risk/reward seems out of balance. Some people feel untouchable these days.
Seriously? There has never been a place in the history of anywhere that wworked. Now bore off the cricket's on.

Complete nonsense. You'd be surprised how high the bar is often set in terms of being recalled to prison.
Do you talk bollox just for the sake of it or are you really this uninformed? Recalls are through the roof for ever more trivial reasons look it up.

What a delight you seem! You having a bad day or are you always this aggressive?

Given it's my job, I'm sure I have greater knowledge in this area than you do. Yes, recall rates are high, but that isn't due to getting recalled for trivial reasons. Actually, there are many who don't get recalled when they really should be due to the overcrowding of prisons.

It was and is bollox as any probation officer will tell you, I still do a little research on this. It is absolutely for mostly trivial reasons barely a quarter are for reoffending. Now then get lost cricket is on and I'm jolly pleasant on that threads. Try some AI all the facts are there.

Sorry Bill but you're wrong on this one. However I am prepared to agree with you for the usual fee!! 😂

I work directly with probation officers on a daily basis you muppet 😂

Good to know that your "little research" using "AI" means you know more than somebody who does it for a living. You clearly think you're above others and I've no time at all for idiots like that, have a good weekend 👍

I’m not mentally or emotionally strong enough Voy, but I know that, so would never have applied.
It’s an absolutely thankless job, which is why I back them 100%, the majority of the time.
Was only messing!

As of 30 September 2024, the recall prison population in England and Wales was 12,579, representing approximately 14.3% of the total prison population of 88,087

the recall population only reached 5,260 (about 6% of the prison population) by June 2014, after significant increases in recall usage over the decades.

Isn't Grok wonderful.

I empathise Herts, I can’t imagine what you’ve done and seen.
I think your current chosen career in horticulture must be a great antidote for what you went through in the police.

The trouble is all the figures say I'm right and so does Jim Brown Blog.

I would wager a weeks pay he wouldn't but goes some way to understand crackpots in places like Iran or the Islamic State and the way the think/behave .

I wonder if he thinks we should apply these types of punishments to football hooligans

Don't forget we also had to make 'points' at phone boxes because we didn't have Motorolas, so getting immediate help was usually unlikely.

As long as it's not retrospective!

Are women Police Officers paid the same as the men?
If they are then they should face the same problems as the men.
OK, WPCs in general are not as big/strong etc as men, so should they receive the same pay rates?
Can they face up to hardened, tough men like the male PCs do??

Women Police Officers ARE paid the same rate, although pension conditions differ slightly

What is missing nowadays is the initial training at DTC's such as Bruche, Dishforth and Cwmbran where fitness was paramount as was the learning of the law.

It was a sad day they decided to close them.

Not sure about this - in my work I have come across some tough woman who work in psychiatric secure units but they were generally better at de escalation and intervening before it kicked off.

A lot of references are made to situations where physical strength is required at the time .However although I'm not a copper ,modern policing is not all about fighting violent idiots off their nuts on booze/drugs - some areas require different skill sets - country terrorism cyber crime, child protection ,organised crime where intelligence, language skills may come into play ( btw I do not equate having a degree with intelligence) .

As for the guys at Manchester airport why can't we lock the fkrs up for a decent amount of time and make them earn a prison wage ,get rid of mobile phones in prison and make the experience unpleasant .Too simple I know ?

Also let's give all police tools to do the job - tasers, vry effective pepper spray or modern truncheon which both placate and ,yes, bloody hurt ?

There is a culture where those in public service are despised by entitled fkrs who have a total disregard for decency and the rights of others

God I'm getting older

Depends on the crime, my brother in law was recalled for working without permission. Probation have to say yes or no to a job, but it takes ages to get an answer. After waiting 3 weeks he just went back to his old job working in a warehouse and got recalled. They turned upto his work and he had to finish the remainder of his sentence which was about half of it, 8 months.

My son is just coming up to the end of his 2nd year in the police, so is technically a probationer.

The fitness levels required to be in the police are ludicrously low.
Just about anyone can compete the bleep test. He did it running backwards because it was so slow.
He's been doing Jujitsu for a number of years and that's more effective than the standard training he has received.

He's 6' 6" fit as a butchers dog, and built. He's lost a bit of speed as he's needed to bulk out a little, but he's still quick.

He's been involved in all sorts of violent incidents. The latest one was chasing a bad guy who jumped on a WPC's stomach full force, so she has to press her emergency button.

He found the bad guy, was chasing him and leaped over a fence which gave way. Carried on chasing him, and unfortunately the bad guy gave himself up and was fully compliant. Meant he couldn't get the treatment he deserved.

15 minutes later all the soft tissue damage started to hurt. Ended up with a moon boot and loads of deep cuts over his arms. He'll live, but seeing his Sergeant coming out of his car (he couldn't drive) with a police van behind initially mate me sick to my stomach; just trying to work out what the hell was going on.

There are people out there who don't give a fuck about whether they are hitting men or women and I think that's changed over the last 30 years. It wasn't the done thing when I was growing up. They don't care now.

And for balance, the job he'd done the night before was escorting the body of a 14 year old boy who'd drowned in a river.

The expectations of the police are exceptionally high, on the whole they do a great job, they aren't perfect, there some who abuse their positions, but I'd like everyone to do a week on shift with them before saying what it should or shouldn't be like.
