My son is just coming up to the end of his 2nd year in the police, so is technically a probationer.
The fitness levels required to be in the police are ludicrously low.
Just about anyone can compete the bleep test. He did it running backwards because it was so slow.
He's been doing Jujitsu for a number of years and that's more effective than the standard training he has received.
He's 6' 6" fit as a butchers dog, and built. He's lost a bit of speed as he's needed to bulk out a little, but he's still quick.
He's been involved in all sorts of violent incidents. The latest one was chasing a bad guy who jumped on a WPC's stomach full force, so she has to press her emergency button.
He found the bad guy, was chasing him and leaped over a fence which gave way. Carried on chasing him, and unfortunately the bad guy gave himself up and was fully compliant. Meant he couldn't get the treatment he deserved.
15 minutes later all the soft tissue damage started to hurt. Ended up with a moon boot and loads of deep cuts over his arms. He'll live, but seeing his Sergeant coming out of his car (he couldn't drive) with a police van behind initially mate me sick to my stomach; just trying to work out what the hell was going on.
There are people out there who don't give a fuck about whether they are hitting men or women and I think that's changed over the last 30 years. It wasn't the done thing when I was growing up. They don't care now.
And for balance, the job he'd done the night before was escorting the body of a 14 year old boy who'd drowned in a river.
The expectations of the police are exceptionally high, on the whole they do a great job, they aren't perfect, there some who abuse their positions, but I'd like everyone to do a week on shift with them before saying what it should or shouldn't be like.
