Fixed Term Parliament

“Boris Johnson paves way for an early general election in 2023 to turn the screw on Labour: Queen's Speech looks toward axing of Fixed-term Parliaments Act”.

And today he announces a Public Enquiry into the handling of the Coronavirus pandemic.......................starting in Spring 2022! No chance therefore that it will report before the next GE!
Conniving, lying, cheating buffoon! No doubt intent on absolving himself from blame for one of the worst death rates in Western Europe!

There is nothing stopping this lot stitching up a one party state is there? Quite disturbing to be honest.

Think that's a little bit unfair. FTA's are a relatively new thing aren't they, brought in my the coalition I think. He's just going back to what we had before.

I agree with the OP though that this suggests a GE in May 2023. We should be back in a period of strong growth by then, I think, so the paper say say at any rate.

The fixed Parliament act was not worth the paper it was written on, as we noticed when the last general election happened.

The reality is the government of the day can change the law - so any bollox of a PM saying something is now written into law, maybe technically correct - BUT it can be changed very quickly!!!

It might be difficult for you to understand, but we live in a democracy, where a majority of the people put the current government in power. Those same people will have the opportunity to change their vote next time. Hope that helps.
I agree but the problem is over 400 seats will be guaranteed either labour or Tory so people in those seats feel their vote is useless but the alternative of P R leaves us with a weak Italian like system. We all need to be encouraged that each vote counts. Another idea is bigger constituency’s and just say 100 MPs paid say £150K to get better people. Trouble is the existing turkeys 🦃 won’t vote for Christmas

Which is why places in the "Red Wall" have now began to vote for alternative candidates.

And what happens when they do.

The party which took them for granted for decades are now calling them thick, racist, knuckle draggers, etc.

In fact the last parliament showed the major fault with the FTPA, the government was unable to govern but also unable to call an election, not a satisfactory situation.

I quite like that idea!!

So what would the downsides be????
A permanent election cycle...ffs its bad enough now every few years. I actually feel like we've been bombarded with voting stuff continually for the last decade. Would actually be nice to have a few years of quiet...

They are corrupt and tyrannical, I won't support any of them.

All of it means little if Labour are still goosed. And it wouldn’t be such a big deal if they weren’t.

Kidding yourself that we live in an effective democracy is not wise though. Labour continued its steep decline despite winning its highest vote share since 2001 4 years ago, it got them essentially fuck all.

In 2019 unionists won the popular vote in N.I. and won less power than republicans. Their higher vote share got them... fuck all.

In 2015 UKIP got more votes than the Lib Dems and SNP combined. It got them fuck all.

Since 2010 the Lib Dems have lost about half of the amount of voters they had, yet lost 86% of their Parliamentary power.

Our democracy is an old fashioned parlour game which favours those who have never worked a day in their life. It’s specifically designed to make sure the common rabble don’t directly decide, rather that their localized preferences can be manipulated into a state of affairs that always favours the continuation of the system and those that benefit from it.

Whilst I think moaning about that is pointless when that energy can be used learning to play it and defeat it, I also think it’s incredibly dumb and self defeating to pretend our government is elected on a popular vote. It’s unavoidable, getting fucked from behind by privately educated chancers (on both sides), but for Christ’s sake you don’t have to pretend to like it.

Indeed….but by changing the law they threw the FTPA away and had an election.

I don't think they changed the law, the FTPA included a provision that allowed for an election to be called if parliament voted for it, I'm not sure if that was a simple majority or a 2/3 one though.

From memory - the FTPA required a 2/3 majority but they could not get it - so they passed a one line amendment which only needed a majority.
