Flag Flying Days

The Union flag is traditionally flown from government/ civic buildings on certain days eg. Queen's birthday, St. George's day etc.

Now the guidance is to fly the flag all year round.

Is this significant in any way?

My office building opened in 1992. There was a right panic in 97 when we quickly had to obtain a flag pole to meet the directive to fly the flag at half mast for Diana. Didn't have one until then.

I'll give it a week before some scrote nicks the flag. Another meaningless gesture from the King of gesture politics.

Only problem here is you fly the flag of St George and half the country go in to melt down saying it’s racist. 😮🤔
Because unfortunately it was hijacked by Far Right groups and none of us had the balls to reclaim it. I want my flag back but since I got a proper kicking by someone draped in it when I was younger, I've always been a bit wary of flag wavers.

It's just willy waving, pure and simple. You would think our politicians had better things to spend their time and energy on, wouldn't you?

But I suppose if you see an appeal to patriotism as a way of deflecting attention from your incompetence you might go for it. They need to be careful though ; this is step one in the six step plan to having us all goose stepping down Whitehallstrasse. 😀

Yep, patriotism: starts with Morris dancing and flags, and ends with barbed-wire and saluting.

"Put out more flags" now appears to be a government strategy - probably nicked from the Evelyn Waugh novel of the same.

Basil Seal (the book`s anti-hero) may be described as shiftless, venal, frivolous, duplicitous and immoral.

Synchronicity?

As long as the usual suspects are frothing about nationalism, jingoism and xenophobia then that’s good enough for me.

I'm not going to enter this debate with the exception of one point. I think it's reasonable for the nation's flag to fly from the top of buildings of national importance: for example, the Houses of Parliament, Windsor Castle and our very own Blackpool Tower.
totally agree. I' d probably include town halls too. Not really that big an issue is it.

No one thinks it's racist, it is pointless and a bit silly though.

It's the right wing version of virtue signalling, look how angry some get on here when anyone questions flying it anywhere, it's just a flag you silly twats, if you want your identity to be represented by an empty and easy gesture that's up to you but don't expect others to be the same.

It’s not unique to the Uk you know, it doesn’t matter where you travel in the world they all fly their flags with pride, it seems it’s only in the Uk that we have the usual suspects getting upset. If you have been waving the flag of the EU around for the last several years and now find it offensive to see the Union Jack flying high then that just makes you a hypocrite , speaking of which wheres CAT ?

No one finds it offensive as I said above, just a bit virtue signalling and empty, the only anger is coming from the right against other people wondering why the flag is suddenly everywhere.

There's a certain irony in being called unpatriotic for questioning the flying of it.

Flag waving is the national equivalent of bald men wearing wigs. Its vain, pretending to be something your not and pointless.

The Government have done some research on this, found it plays well with a certain demographic and decided it's a pretty good deflection technique by making a big deal out of something that isn't a big deal. It gets one element creaming their jodpers and another element foaming at the mouth. Culture wars innit.

The flag waving xenophobes, by jingo, of course
so pretty much every country the world over does the same but the good old lefties on here want to make an issue of it and target us. Your pride in our country comes bursting thru like a ray of sunlight,it really does.
Tell me Wizz, why did the YS purchase a flag if not to show it off with pride of who you are and where you come from?

In my opinion there is a difference in waving a flag on joyous occasions and to celebrate special events to making the flag an everyday branding exercise aimed at some kind of superiority over other countries. Why does it feel like this country is on a war footing with itself and everyone else? Its 2021 and totally unnecessary.

I don't fly it every day. It goes to games. To do otherwise would be mental

The guy who looks after flags is furloughed or redundant.

I see the Union flag all over the place which is hardly surprising as it is our countries flag!
The amount of people who are offended by the sight of it will be so small that it's not worth bothering about.
Didn't know Government buildings didn't fly it every day, if asked I would have just assumed they do.
Amazing how stuff look this becomes a story, it's just not that big a deal is it?

We are unusual in that we have specific days when we fly the national flag.

I was wondering if this move was to avoid another debate, like should the flag be flown on Sophie Wessex/ Prince Andrew/ etc. birthdays?

The thought of you Willy waving has put me off my supper 😯

No one is offended by the sight of the flag flying. People are offended by the faux jingoism that the current directive brings in that appeals to the baser instincts in some.

That is the thing we all need to ignore, the Government are trying to engineer arguments out of these none issues, I think we should just shrug our shoulders and call them out on the things that really matter.

Are you sure about that? A poster said this the other day.

Yes but I am proud of my country and I also think that waving a flag is a futile, child-like gesture that is likely to antagonise other people
