Fleetwood v Blackpool EFL Trophy Official Matchnight Thread 08.12.20

We had some excellent penalties - Sarkic, Garbutt and Gabriel. Lubala's was fine too - people looking too hard for things to criticise methinks.

Robson's though was really poor, he didn't make any effort.
Against a decent keeper Lubala’s would have been saved. Two or three stuttering steps and very little power, not good except it crept in.

So you tell people not to be critical - then be critical. PMSL.

Frustrating going out knowing we should have scored in the first half and the penalty we lost out on was absolutely woeful.

Not the end of the day with it being the EFL Trophy though. Concentrate on the league now

Simms is nowhere near ready for first team football. But we will get an emergency loan in of Maxwell is ruled out.
Agree. With the salary cap it seems we’ve gone for quality elsewhere and kept only one capable keeper. Despite his development pedigree Fotofit didnt look any better than Sims in the very limited appearance he had.

Somewhat disappointing to be honest.
We're not very good when it goes to penalties are we?
Stoke, Accrington and now Cods🤦‍♂️

decent first half probably should have put the game to bed to be honest. The movement of anderson along with robson and Virtue, was really good to watch. Luballa had a decent game. was a bit disapointed with Sarkic he had one good moment maybe. Kemp couldnt really get into the game propperly. Thorniley likes to make a pass to put his team mates into trouble, two full backs both played well. Turton was solid as a central defender untroubled all night.

second half with Williams on for Virtue we lost some of our bite and some of our forward thinking. lost some shape. when Anderson went off we lost the attacking momentum. all got a bit scrappy and pointless.

pens - hey ho.

good to see though a very solid player with maybe two exceptions in every position.

Need to remember a lot of these lads have hardly had any football, especially not consistent football.

Sarkic didnt take his chance tonight but I can see the glimpses of what they saw in him to sign him. There is a classy player in there with a football brain and a lovely touch just needs to be brought out of him.

Nothing to get overly bothered about. A good run out for Williams and Virtue coming back from injury, and highlights the areas we need to look at for strengthening next month, like more firepower.

And we won the important one on Saturday.

Saturday was the important one, good for some players to get a run out, as others have said keeper looks an issue if Maxwell has to miss a game at any time

We played well first half, but struggled to convert possession into decent chances.

Thornilley, Lubala and Sarkic didn't do themselves any favours tbh. I'd say we'll be looking for a striker in January as we haven't got much in the striker department if Yates or Madine get injured.

Yes, we do have a scoring problem. The strikers need game time to get the urgency into them. This competition is gone but perhaps the league games require a more considered rotation on the bench.

Sims, Sarkic, Thorniley - not good enough

The rest of them look like good replacements, with Gabriel and Garbutt at front of the queue to come into the side.

The B side really get a B grade there.

Simms isn’t a League One standard keeper.

Turton, Garbutt and Gabriel are all very talented and the latter two could easily be first team starters.

Thorniley is done with us, his basic defensive awareness is appalling.

Williams and Robson look very comfortable on the ball and can both put a tackle in and pick a pass respectively. They can count them selves unfortunate we have such an abundance of good players in midfield.

Anderson appears to have bags of talent but I’m not sure we know what to do with him, I feel a tad sorry for him.

Good to see Virtue back.

Kemp, still don’t understand this signing, could have kept Shaw and developed him.

Bez, actually looks promising a season long loan somewhere might do him good.

Sarkic is an enigma, looks like he should have all the physical attributes but doesn’t, does have a good touch and composure but can’t seem to get going. Bit of a head scratcher.

Not been clinical enough all season, it’s not much use playing teams off the park if we can’t put the ball in the back of the net.

Bit unfair the 'all season' comment, IMO. Throughout the whole of last month we only failed to score more than one goal in a single game (against Wigan, where we won 1-0). We're also top of the form table. I think that's, specifically, an area we have improved in and the minus goal difference is thanks to our shocking start.

It was what it was tonight - two sides each with ten changes from Sat. We looked the better side, played the better football for the most part and lost on penalties in the pizza trophy. We rested players and it will have given Critch more of an idea of where players like Sarkic and Thorniley are are at (i.e. a ways from being in the first eleven). C'est la vie.

Spot on in my opinion all that, Rekt.

Seemed ok to me. We had 3 excellent penalties, one ok one and one shit one. Your focusing on the bad stuff. Why?!
I’m focusing on the fact we lost. I’m also wondering why out of 22 new players we haven’t got anyone who looks a real goal threat. We have lost three shoot outs this season, why. In the league we have a minus goal difference, why, the answer is in front of goal we are terrible. It’s not a negative post it’s a statement of fact.

Things from that are that we are very weak on the goalkeeping front and we only have 2 strikers at the club which is of big concern.

Even the strikers we have haven't been prolific.

As someone said above we are climbing but still on negative goal difference.

We don't win many games by a clear margin and score a few. Putting it in the net has been a running issue for large parts.

As for keeper's...we have that fozzycheque 😃 defo spelt different.... but I think his first ever action was to give a goal away ridiculously against Everton was it or other friendly or micky mouse game? An absolute howler, never been seen since.

I agree we looked the better side and we played the better football but the fact remains we are creating a great deal of chances and failing to put the majority away. Jimmy Greaves said many moons ago, if I have ten shots a game and 8 end up in the crowd, I don’t care as long as the other 2 go in. We need someone with that attitude.

To be fair we didn’t have a striker out there tonight.

but the crux of tonight and goal threat and the lack there of was the switch back to 433. Critch is itching for it to work, but it just doesn’t give us any attacking thrust.

When we’ve played two up top with Yates, Madine, CJ and Kai Kai we have looked dangerous.

All I’d say is just let 433 go Critch, just let it go.

The old 'fact' defence! ;-)

Yes we do lack enough of a goal threat, I agree. But it's not about the penalties we took, we mainly lost them because of the keeper being too easy to beat.

We've won 8 of out last 10 games so maybe balance the negativity a bit?

It is true though that we haven't taken our chances all season, even on our good run recently. I'm not being too critical because it's results that count. We only have two out and out strikers and recently we have been playing both Cole and Yorke together. I'm certain we will be after some back up in January. Our gameplay and pressing is starting to click, now it's time to put some more chances away
