Floaty set pieces

Must be the worst set pieces in the league. We have been awful. Sully couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo tonight. And Robson has been equally atrocious this season too.

Correct too easy to defend against it's as bad as the long throw unless you can do a Delap the defence just attack the ball.
Put some pace on the ball.

The one consistent thing this season has been that our set pieces have been utter rubbish. We can't put a decent ball in, and even if we did no one really attacks it. Needs a lot of work because as Rotherham demonstrated last season, it can really make a big difference.

50 years actually. They were sublime in for most of the seventies with Bill Bentley floating the to the near post and Micky Walsh either glancing them in or glancing them out for others to run on to and score. Such a good routine.
You had your tangerine specs on!
I loved that late 60's/ early 70's squad and Bungalow Bill did indeed take a mean corner.

It seems we currently don't have anyone who can whip the ball in at a decent pace, I think Garbutt may be able to when he's back. Don't get me on about outswinging corners either.

Can we stop them? Cheers, done it all season long.
Spot on.
With all the analysis that goes on, allegedly, the coaching staff should be able to identify what constitutes "good delivery".
If that's your job you should be spending a lot more time practising and if you're not up to let someone else have a go. Kaikai free kicks and corners were shocking last night.
Garbutt is reputedly a free kick specialist so lets see him have go on Saturday.

Oh I don't know. Fergie reckoned Charlie's corners were worth £10M. Who was the one against that went straight in in front of us on the Kop PL season ?

They weren't so bad when Tom Ince and Charlie were here - they could be whipped in, plus mixed up with a short one to the near post which was then flicked on into the box. Variety is good. You'd surely think that getting one in 3 whipped in properly is better than predictable floated in corners all match.

I guess Garbutt will be our go to man once he's fit and breaks into the starting 11. Set pieces are vital, given then number we get and waste there is a real opportunity to improve. Hopefully that, along with maintaining our shape are high on the list ahead of the Harrogate match.

What about Paul Simpson’s corners? I remember we were almost guaranteed to score when he took a corner!

My thinking has always been that if your set plays, particularly corners aren't good/working then the taker should be told just to put the ball in an area, like the penalty spot and let the players sort the rest out. Don't try to be clever.

I think David Eyres, Paul Simpson, Wes Hoolahan, Charlie Adam and even Tom Ince may have something to say about that.

Some of the classiest set-piece men we've ever had.

I'm not a football coach but I always thought set piece delivery was something where practice might not make perfect but it should make it a damn sight better then what we currently. 4 players, 2 left, 2 right, every day putting the ball on the heads of those cut out defenders. Don't want too much heading practice.

There are not too many in the lower leagues who seem capable of putting decent whipped balls in. Let’s hope he keeps fit.
