Free Speech

A little old lady holds up a sign that reminds jurors of their rights and is now being prosecuted. She could face up to two years in prison.

A judge decides what arguments defendants are allowed to put forward in their own defence.

Bit of a slippery slope this.

“Down with this sort of thing”

as Father Ted might have said!

Agree with Father Ted.

Unfortunately we live in a country where the government and the media have persuaded more of the population that this isn`t really wrong, and those that think it is wrong are just "woke". I daresay GB News will be forming a `superstar panel` to berate the lady as an enemy of the people as I type.

This government is sucking the humanity out of the population, and this is why they must go at the next election.

Well, one of the reasons...

I’ll be surprised if the charges stick. And she will become a martyr if imprisoned. Typical Tory silencing legislation, if enough of us defy it then there’ll be another u turn.

Of all the dreadful things the last 4 PM's have done, eroding basic rights taken for granted in all civilised countries, is the most dangerous. Right to protest, right to a full and free defence in court, right to asylum, right to vote without artificial identification barriers, right to question the executive, supremacy of Parliament.

I know the Tories hate anyone calling them Fascist, but these governments are approaching this, despite the best efforts of many One Nation Tories.

As I recall, similar limitations were placed upon the defence ‘options’ available to the anti-fracking protesters.

It would seem that any defence that might potentially result in an acquittal is eliminated from the list of possible options.

We do need to stand up for free speech in many areas, some didn't seem as bothered when it's some of the things that have been raised on here before.

However with this one there are certain rules outside a live court case. But am not sure on the legality of her 'advice' and when that's deemed to have crossed the line. Does seem a bit much tbh.

Maybe she should get hold of the free speech union.

We've also seen with some of the just stop oil protesters that you can't just allow that to happen in some cases, it's often dangerous and can turn nasty as vigilantes take things into their own hands.

It is often a difficult line to tread to say when is your right to protest infringing on other people rights etc.

Re “the legality of her advice” if you read the article you’ll see that Bushel’s case in 1607 established the principle of the independence of the jury. Regardless of how much that irritates the judge. There’s a wiki page on it.

This lady was just reminding jury members of that right. Much to the annoyance of the Solicitor General/Tory MP who is trying to have her sent to prison.

Edit to add: there’s even a plaque in the Old Bailey that refers to it. Is that also in contempt?

Yeah as said seems a bit suspect, but clearly using the contempt of court rules and pushing the boundaries.

It's happening in many aspects of life where you can be shut down, wrong opinion, always more and more power to the state etc.

Right to withdraw your labour too.
