Gay Prem Star

Not sure what the need to come out is for tbh...i’m pretty sure 99.5% of us couldn’t care less about people’s colour, religion or sexual orientation.
surely a players private life should stay that way...
Often people in this position have to come out before their personal life is splashed across the red tops.

Basically they are forced to do it on their own terms before some fleet street vulture can earn his pound of flesh.

Interestingly it took a real mans sport Rugby Union to break through sexual equality.
Gareth Thomas was very brave coming out and looks to have been supported by most people.
Britain is such a diverse and accepting society.
In my view it’s only a matter of time before we see the first openly gay footballer.
I would hope any abuse would be drowned out by a round of “there’s only one....???)
Also agree with other posters that this shouldn’t be an issue.

If this was a Brighton player, would it aid or hinder their anti-homophobia drive though? They seem to get enough homophobic abuse for the town being seen as some sort of "gay haven" so would this just add fuel to that fire?

Yep sounds like a drama queen being gay isn't even a thing now bit like racism in football not seen or heard any racism in at least the last 300 games I've been to.

I work the cab rank at Ma Kelly’s/Kaos, and during the season I see holiday makers, multiple times a night, nudging each other, pointing, smirking and quite often taking photos, as they spot Kaos. I also talk to lots of gay folk and cross dressers who have moved to Blackpool from all over the country so they can live how they want without judgement and in safety.
We live in a very, very tolerant town compared to many other places in the UK, but being gay certainly IS a thing for far too many people.

You sound confused, Sooty. Mind you, having a guy’s hand up your @rse for your entire working life can’t have helped
Ha Ha that old chestnut always gives everyone a laugh, plays havoc with your piles though, perhaps another pile thread 😂

It’s amazing this is still a problem in Sport society. Doesn’t seem to hold back anyone in the Arts and to lesser extent, in Business these days.
Perhaps if some former professionals came out publically rather than hiding then it would help today’s generation.
Be interesting if the BBC asked Mark Lawrenson to comment instead of purely speaking shite about Liverpool or PKE at every opportunity.

I have a gay neighbour and he’s one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet and get to know. I’ve never had a problem with gay men at all I find them all polite a lot nicer than some straight men I’ve met on a daily basis

Why is this "mystery" person making such a big issue of it?

All he is doing is attracting attention to himself but why? In all honesty does anyone really give a monkeys whatever his sexual leanings are. It was mentioned that if he is playing well then no-one will bother but what if he isn't playing well? Does that mean he will be given grief about his sexuality and poor performance by his own fans?

If he does come out then there will be the morons who will give him grief but as someone posted earlier on this thread, get them chucked out.

Perhaps the gay footballer is afraid that the professional football community might not be wholly the most educated, liberal and tolerant group in our society? In fact, it’s not a “perhaps”, that is definitely what he is saying. As it’s a lucrative but very short duration career at the top, it’s not surprising that those gay players who have come out have tended to do so after they have retired. It’s their risk to decide upon when is the best time and not something we can really fully appreciate. Football is his life and he does not want to take any risk that might lose that. That the professional game does need to offer more support is what he is asking for.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
Should of proved his innocence then but he knew he couldn't - the evidence was substantial. He would have been found guilty. All about whether it was first , second or third degree assault. He was charged with 3 counts of sexual assault. The victim had no reason to lie unless of course you are saying the victim was lying?

Just like you, I do not know who did what. Are you saying any accusation is automatically true, that is a very dangerous road?

I believe he was 100% guilty. Physical signs of an assault and the perpetrators DNA would have been damming. I believe that they would have found him guilty. Maybe he didn't want to face a possible 25 years in prison as the offence was in Maryland whereas elsewhere considerably less. I am not saying every accusation is true far from it, but in this case I would much rather be the prosecuting attorney than his defence.

Rugby Union is notoriously full of closet gays in denial.

Mark Lawrenson is a married man with kids.

My quid each way is on Jesse lingard. Fine young fellow, not an issue for me, whoever it is will need our support though because there's plenty of knuckle heads who'll give him a difficult time. Tragic state of affairs but true unfortunately even in this day and age

Yes I've seen those pics, but I'm not convinced. they're obviously a very good looking couple, but it's only a quid each way! There will be dozens of gay professional footballers, the first one "out" will cause a massive stir, and it'll take courage but then there'll be loads coming out and hopefully it'll just stop being a "thing". I doubt it, but I wish we could just move on from it

Fashanu claimed the sex was consensual, the other party claimed otherwise. According to Fashanu afterwards the lad asked for money he refused and the lad said 'you wait and see'. The problem Fashanu had was that homosexuality was illegal in Maryland at the time. He had fled to the UK after the complaint was made, there was no guarantee he would ever face court in the US.

Sounds far from an open and shut case as far as the accusation of sexual assault goes.
