General player fitness

Something occurred to me t'other day after hearing about the lack of match readiness of some of our signings.

To be clear I'm not having a go here. It must be hard for them. Every professional should be maintaining a good general level of fitness, but we all know it's only game time that will add the final bit.

Under the general modus operandi of the previous owners that was a common thing, and even now we have to take our fair share of it, along with all the other clubs in the same boat or worse. Every season there must be dozens of pros in that situation, without portfolio and trying to find somewhere with no preseason game time behind them.

Its hard for the club's as well, they're trying out trial lists but also trying to concentrate on their own squad fitness, so places are limited.

So why doesn't someone important organise trial or practice games specifically for just those players. I'm sure there's enough that they could be regionally based to save costs. Doesn't matter if they play the blokes a few times either, it would give loads of them a good preseason run out and give them a chance of landing at a club fitter than they seem to.

Think there is a double whammy of no games since March too.

Yes of course you're absolutely right. I was thinking historically as well, but maybe back then we were the only ones who were really bad for it.

Maybe though, taking this year, it strengthens the case for having them

I think it's a good idea.

Years ago I'm sure Glenn hoddle set soemthing up where he got loads of non-contract players and organised games between them, with scouts coming along as well with a view to sign them.

Not sure of the success though.
