Grayson vs. Critchley

Just posted this on the "takes a big man to admit he's wrong" thread and thought it probably warranted its own discussion, we're 5 games off Critchley reaching Grayson's total games before he was potted and here is how they shape up:

GRAYSON
GAMESTOTAL
PLAYED29
WON9
DREW10
LOST10
POINT TOTAL37

CRITCHLEY:
GAMESTOTAL
PLAYED24
WON10
DREW4
LOST10
POINT TOTAL34

5 games less and Critchley is already beating his wins in the league, but has matched his losses. The 5 fixtures he has before he reaches Grayson's total of games:
Burton (H)
Peterborough (H)
Rochdale (H)
Portsmouth (A)
Doncaster (H)

You'd imagine he'll be safely beating Grayson by the 29 games played point. Not bad considering its his first full season in charge, whereas Grayson was a seasoned manager with around 15 years of experience.

What do we think then? Definitely be interesting to see where we're at after those 5 games.

The fact Grayson started off pretty decent but then it all descended in to a mess is not illustrated in those stats.
Yesterday was crap, but on the whole we've been showing improvement under Critchley.
We were only heading one way under Grayson.
The stats don't show the 2 month period where we didn't record a single win under Grayson (December 7th - February 8th), horrendous run!

We need to see the passing stats, Larry's team barely strung three passes together most weeks.
Yes they did, 1. Hoof it up to Armande, 2. He knocks it down to an opposing player, then he passes it to one of his teammates. There you go, 4 passes, happened all the time.

There's passing with intent and just passing. No point in losing games with over 60% posession. That was our problem at the start of the season, loads of ball and going nowhere.
Then NC stumbled on Madine and things improved, going longer at times and keeping the ball when we needed to.
Never addressed buying a creative midfielder like we had in Dewsbury-Hall and seemed content to sign every holding player on the planet.

So really not much in it and Critchley has had substantial backing. I know we’re building for the future, but I can’t see SS being entirely happy at this point.
I’m not sure the backing has been that substantial. Most from L1 and 2 with a stack of loans. He’s been supported but has it been anything out of the ordinary ??
That’s a question not a criticism

We haven't signed an extremely expensive total flop, so I can see him being a little happier at that. The players we have paid a fee for, like Hamilton, Yates, Ekpiteta are proving to be good buys and probably cost less than Nuttall combined. Not quite sure where this notion has come from that Grayson wasn't backed but Critchley has been? Grayson has 15 years experience and still managed to spend a shed load on a dud. When it comes to spending the owners money, Critchley has a better hit rate imo. Sadler will be disappointed at the league position as he's a fan, but I bet he's happier with how his money is being spent.

Considering Grayson is an extremely experienced and successful manager in this division that shows how great Critchley is to be almost matching someone of such experience in his first proper managerial job

In Critchley we trust

For L1 I'd guess we've spent substantially more on transfers than most teams in the division and a good few of them have yet to prove they've been worth the investment. Glad Grayson has gone, that goes without saying, but there has to be a point where we are getting more bang for our buck than what we are currently doing.

Yeah but teams that change to a passing style usually are like that at first, what you do is stick to it, maybe tweak it slightly, improve at it and learn how to master it.

What we have done is not abandoned it but at times we cant play out from the backline and just pass across it and hoof it.

I thought this far in the style would be a lot more embedded.

For example players spreading wide and hugging the touchline, we saw under ollie. A set way, effective and hard to stop when done right. Passing in triangles, with confidence, create lots of chances.

This is just one example but from kick off I saw us pass it back and just blast it aimlessly ouf of play. Surely if the players were drilled they would keep it and pass it around and work their way forward.

A long aimless ball for Yates to try and beat 2 big centre halves in the air is pointless.

Yes you're right, I was probably sent to sleep by the exciting fare by then though..............

I thought C was doing better until Saturday, no tippy tappy , a solid 4 4 2 , and learning what this division is about and then he made a bad team and formation choice.
I hope he learns and goes back to what is working.
Also we don’t know how lack of crowds is affecting things.
Maybe too late for a top 6/this season already but we can keep hoping, can’t we?

I think the key thing in this is that we're a better squad than last season and results 'feel better'. We need to get (sadly) to where Lincoln are and just ploughing on with wins - still think we're capable when Madine, Ballard and others are back of surprising a few.

I think Ipswich got lucky this season with two games where we were well down on numbers and ideas.

graysons win ratio was due to the start of his reign when he had inherited the team he started the slide when he brought in HIS players

Also with the back drop of no fans in the ground and games be postponed, rescheduled and players catching the vid.

We have to be patient.
I really like Critchley and his approach but he is still learning on the job.
Saturday was an experiment by him that didn't work, but we have a few new players to blood and injuries to some key players atm. Give him a chance to grow into the job. For me that means at least another year, if we are not challenging for promotion then it may be time to think again. In Critchley we have bought into a way of playing that is great to watch and I like most of the signings that he has made. he seems to know the market well enough.
I do seem to remember people questioning the ability of Ekpiteta and Gretarrsson after the first few games.
In Dougall and Stewart we have a midfield pairing that is probably a bit better than the level we are at, but they need time to forge a partnership.
Give the guy a chance, he is far more inspiring and interesting than Grayson who seems to have lost his way somewhat.

They did if you want to discount forward passes, I am sure I remember a free kick high up the pitch that we eventually passed back to our keeper.
Bolton away that. What an awful game, I remember having to get a taxi from Manchester as all the trains were off and that was the only way to get to there. Certainly wasn't worth the hassle.

What really wound me up last season was what seemed like a lack of fire and passion from the squad, we were certainly doing our part taking big away followings and getting behind them (Accrington, Rochdale, Bolton and Tranmere away stood out for me) and there just seemed to be no response. Whether it was Grayson's tactics holding them back or whatever, I just used to think how don't you have some fire in your belly with this support behind you.

So the update at 29 games, probably not the greatest game to compare afterwards as we're feeling a bit sore but here it is:
GRAYSON
GAMESTOTAL
PLAYED29
WON9
DREW10
LOST10
POINT TOTAL37

CRITCHLEY:
GAMESTOTAL
PLAYED29
WON13
DREW6
LOST10
POINT TOTAL45

Haven't recorded a single loss since this thread was started a month ago. 13 wins so surpassed Grayson by a fair amount, an 8 points difference as well.
